  1. Growing tired of Slashdot on iPhone Owners Irate After iOS Update Bricks Cellular Data (tomsguide.com) · · Score: 1

I have been reading /. for a very long time -- longer than I can remember. Over the last four years, the quality of the posts on this forum have become increasingly poor. It used to be that we would make fun of MS back when Bill Gates was depicted as a borg and we laughed like self-righteous fools. The target has turned to Apple and Google. Often the posts about Apple or Google are pretty thin such as this one. The article in question is from Tom's Guide who quotes Forbes (why not just take it from the Forbes article -- the Tom's Guide article adds zero). Forbes has been doing some pretty shady tech reporting lately and this is no exception. Exactly how broad a problem is this? I, myself, have never heard of it. A quick check of my own iPhone reveals that I'm running 12.1.2. Hmm.... No problems here. Let's check the other four iPhones in the house... nope. There is no news in this article. It's just a drive-by shooting and I'm starting to think that it isn't random. On another note, /. has provided me almost no news or entertainment in a couple of years. The reporting is terrible and completely lopsided. After years of enjoyment, it now completely sucks.

  2. Re:230 MPG on Chevy Volt Rated At 230 mpg In the City · · Score: 1

For those of us in europe this means about 0.01 L per km (no, we don't use the km/L stated in the summary, we use L/km).

    /Mikael

Not sure how it works in Europe, but in Canada, it's typically L/100 km which would make this 1.02L/100km.

But no, I've never seen km/L. However, a lot of car advertisers will print MPG in the papers under the assumption that younger Canadians will not buy their vehicles. I don't have a clue what a MPG is in relation to good mileage.

  3. Halo? on District 9 Rises From the Ashes of Halo · · Score: 2, Insightful

To suggest that District 9 rose from the ashes of a failed attempt at Halo is disingenuous at best. First off, yet another movie based on a video game is a bad idea anyway. District 9 is more directly an expansion of the short film which can be seen on YouTube. However, an attempt to link it to Halo is most likely a cheap advertising gimmick to get fanboys out to the cinema.

  4. Re:Alberta on Emigrating To a Freer Country? · · Score: 1

While Alberta has many things going for it, my friends there report that the place is socially conservative rather than libertarian.

Absolutely true. I lived in Alberta for seven long years. It's got jobs and nice scenery, but I couldn't take it.

  5. Re:And? on SSN Required To Buy Palm Pre · · Score: 1

I have lived in Canada almost my entire life and first off a) there is no SSN. There is something called a Social Insurance Number which serves a similar purpose; and b) I have never been asked for my SIN for a cell phone contract. Revenue Canada has a website that tells you when you should and should not provide your SIN:
Who can ask for my SIN and when don't I have to provide my SIN?
    Critically:
Here are examples of when you don't have to give your Social Insurance Number or show your card:

  6. Re:This is so messed up on User Charged With Taking ISP Tech Hostage · · Score: 1

I'm a Haligonian and I have met Carol Sinclair (acquaintance of an acquaintance).

What a small world. She doesn't seem like the "hostage holding" type at all, and the local ISPs are known for their shitty customer service. Seems like quite a misunderstanding.

According to the Chronicle Herald here in Halifax, the police found her to be very intoxicated. This makes it entirely believable that she did threaten the employee.

  7. Contact your MP and Jim Prentice on US Group Calls Canada a Top Copyright Violator · · Score: 1

Do not send an e-mail; it is a waste of time. MPs do not count e-mails when they consider support for a particular issue. Contact your local MP by phone -- particularly if you live in an underpopulated riding -- and send a snail mail to Jim Prentice. His address is:

    Suite 105
    1318 Centre St NE
    Calgary, Alberta T2E 2R7

Canadians should be proud that we have resisted this long. Let's not give up this fight.

On a separate note, if either the Liberals or Conservatives had a majority, this would have been over ages ago, and we would not have liked the result.

  8. Re:Really Bill? on Bill Gates Calls for a 'Kinder Capitalism' · · Score: 1

To paraphrase Churchill: "It has been said that capitalism is the worst form of economy except all the others that have been tried." That's not what Churchill said. What he said was

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. I would also like to see that stats that shows that socialist countries like those in Northern Europe have more per capita poverty than the U.S.
