preware is basically cydia on iOS but with HP's blessing, I'm still new to this but that's how I understand it. If you're a Mac User I have some dead simple instructions to pass on if you want them, otherwise head on over to precentral.com.
I bought a cheap TouchPad (trying to bag a Pre 3), installed Preware on it (so simple to do), over clocked it (again simple and now I have a dual core 1.5Ghz with 1GB of RAM) and gained access to all the lovely open source software available as well as a curated App Store by HP who have stated they are fully behind (receiving new apps and updates everyday), I've no reason to take WebOS off it thanks. I feel I'm only missing the Amazon Kindle App (US only atm), and Viber (which is still coming so they said in an email to me).
The community also seems a lot tighter for it as well. I think people are being too quick in their efforts to port Android to it.
I think the worse part of this is HP's impatience towards this, even as an existing iPad owner, I believe the HP failed on pricing and not on the technicals. They should stick with the hardware not just the software.
With regard to point 2, how many points of failure are there with a laptop and how many have been eliminated with the iPad? Genuine issues with iPads are simply replaced with another one.
I'm sure your mother made the effort however to ride a bike and then later on, thought fit to learn how to drive a car. They both get you from A to B but your mother learnt both methods.
I'm sure learning something is frustrating, but who said you get to a point where you need to stop?
It's not really a rumour when Steve Jobs himself mentioned they designed the iPad before the iPhone on All Things D.;-)
I agree with your point though and you saved me the time to write my own, also citing Apple as an example. It seems so simple AND they said they would be investing in R&D during the downturn. Now look at them, they are making a killing in profits IN A DOWNTURN! Imagine what it would be like if we weren't living in a recession?
Try Apple's software on a Mac dude. Yes Mac hardware is commodity stuff, nobody said it wasn't but have you seen how it works compared to windows hardware? Clean, no screws, anodised aluminium, solid build construction and integrated so nicely with the software. By the way, the iPad's advantage is not just reasons I cited regarding the Mac but regarding software, surely the quality of the Apps matter as well?
You might be right initially about the marketing (any product in general), but the iPod is ten years old now, I'd say its standing on its own merits technically and on a ease of use basis.
My mum techie mum just ditched her iMac for an iPad. I'd say she cares about thinness. Last night a friend of mine got an iPad for her birthday, she loves how thin it is! Two examples though anecdotal.
This is informative? A post laden with Apple stereotypes and a comparison of hardware without taking into account software and Q&A testing? Also a comparison between a charity to a business? There's a reason why the iPad costs more, the hardware and software is top notch over anything else.
That to me is ignorance, MS never wanted to pay licensing for just about everything, computer formats or Helvetica. Like I said, they were ignorant and making my life hard just for transferring a megabyte on a floppy from computer to computer.
They external iomega floppy drives attached to them. This WAS 1997, people were still in denial over Apple pulling the floppy drive from their newest creations.
I fondly remember going to my 6th form library in 1997 to visit totalannihilation.com on Bondi Blue iMacs to download new units onto a floppy disk every week. I was savvy enough to understand that the floppy disk needed to be formatted for FAT32 and the Mac could read them but Windows being the ignorant computer citizen it was, couldn't read Mac formatted disks.
I think it was because Apple switched to Intel, not because people could install Windows on it.
Overclocking it is your friend. Mine runs almost as fast as iOS after upping the clock speed and minimising all the logging that goes on inside.
Thanks guys, this is what is also so great about WebOS as well. The community.

Correction, too quick in their efforts to want to swap WebOS out for Android.
Look on eBay, some are only going for double the firesale prices. Worth a try bagging one IMO.

Shut the fuck up. You're wrong Mr AC.
This could almost be a reality TV show.

That's an amazing piece of reductionist thinking right there, well done.

Did you notice it was produced by 'Anonymous'?
Great reference.
You can also earn a lot if people were prepared to pay realistic prices for items.
non-techie, whoops!
