  1. Re:Why do people listen to "Analysts"? on Sony Denies PS3 Delay · · Score: 1

Why do people actually listen to market analysts?

Because most people don't realize the difference between a Market Analyst report and an official press release. They read a report about Sony, so they assume everything in it is true. They fail to see the report for what it is, a view of the market from one analyst. It doesn't help when sites like slashdot present the story with tidbits like, "the PS3 will cost $900!" I use that as an example because most people assume that means it can cost them that amount. Out of context, it could be read that way. In context, it is easily realized that is the estimated parts cost from a non-Sony employee. Whew. How crediable.

And you can't get music from multiple stores and play it all from the same player (without cracking it). That, capitan, is what we call a monopoly. Keep using us (the first one to market), and if you switch, you can't listen to all your old music.

I fail to understand anything you've said in this section. iTMS was the first the RIAA let slide? It is pretty amazing how easy a company will let something slide when you pay them a per-song fee. If they didn't do that, say like MP3.COM, the RIAA would probably crack down on them. Oh wait. That is what happened.

And you can't get music from multiple stores and play it all from the same player (without cracking it).
How is this any different than Songbird? If I download DRM'd music from random-music-store iTunes won't play it and neither will Songbird. If I download non-DRM from allofmp3.com, iTunes will play it and so will Songbird.

That, capitan, is what we call a monopoly. Keep using us (the first one to market), and if you switch, you can't listen to all your old music.
Okay sure. This now means I have to always use the iTunes player to listen to the iTunes songs. Again, if I go to a new service that uses DRM, iTunes won't play that music and neither will that service play my iTunes. So again, I fail to see your point.

For any non-DRM music I have now or I buy in the future, iTunes will never "lock-me-in" to its player. If the RIAA will only allow music stores to sell music online with DRM, I don't see why that makes iTMS the evil entity.

Based on your statisical sample of 1, 100% of people never see a limitation. GOooooddd.
No the parent is not basing things on a statistical sample of one. The parent is basing their comments on being a member of Jonny-Q-Public. For the majority of iTunes users, we don't care about the DRM that is there. It is almost entirely transparent to us. However, as soon as a RSS feed from slashdot mentions DRM, hundreds of geeks piss and moan. For example, (and this is just an example so not feel the /.-need to argue it to death) how many often have you burned an mp3 to a CD more than 7 times? The opinions of Slashdotters are not a significant stastical sample, either.

So here we are hearing it will have record capabilities. It'll revolutionize the way people use their video game consoles for the next decade. What is it? Oh. its some 3rd party pledging to port MythTV to the PS3 (I'm making that part up.)

  14. HUD isn't only source of Burn-In on Off With Their HUDS! · · Score: 1

The article really hits hard on the fact that HUDs can cause Burn-In. It neglects though that almost every game it praises for not having a HUD, has static elements. People frequency forget that elements of their screen never move. For example, in a first person shooter, your gun rarely moves. It is typically perched in the center of the screen while all of the other elements around it, move. Third-person action games (Platformers) typically keep their main character near the same place on the screen.

While those elements aren't as pronounced as a HUD, they can still force the same problem.

Sending shitty emails to a customer service box is as effective as yelling at a customer service person on the phone. You'll feel better but they'll care even less about your issue.

People seem to forget that just because a company employs someone, that person is still a person. So they will react and handle things the way they do. There isn't a "Dell" chip implanted in employees anymore than any other company. Assuming you work at a medium-large sized company, imagine a reversal. Say a customer called you and asked you a question (not necessarily tech support question). Do you think you would answer or react the same way the guy sitting next to you would? Why not? You work at the same company, don't you?

This comment needs more attention. Look at the larger picture here. You have identified a solution without identifing an issue. You say the solution is to change "phases." But what is the problem?

My first reaction to the parent question is what do you mean by "different phase." Do you mean your server room is fed off of 2 or 3 phase power? And that some outlets are fed off of different branches? Or do you mean you change to a different circuit?

What is likely is that certain voltage rails aren't settling out and isn't allow your power supply to raise the power-good signal. Or in the case of partially booting systems, isn't bringing all of its rails up correctly. Why does moving to a different outlet change this? How long does it take to move?

It is more likely the process of moving, the time involved or how you connect/disconnect things are allowing capacitors in the PS to discharge.

Anyway. I do not think you have correctly identified the behavior, but somehow you already know the solution.

The post provides a good solution. Unplug and "turn-on" the machine, then plug it back in.

If enough appliances suspend their power activities for a few minutes or have the ability to coordinate their usage, then the power-grid will remain stable.
