  3. Re:NMSU on A College Without Microsoft? · · Score: 1

Not to sound silly but I think it is a great idea for CS students to be learning on alternate OSs like Linux etc... however given the fact that many students just need to type papers in labs etc.. it is kinda hard to make the case for the entire university to switch over. Most students dont know how to use linux, in fact they are lucky to scrape by in Windows. Just a little taste of reality. Good for Cs students, bad for the rest, in general.

.. for one thing quit looking at Media Play, Best Buy, etc. Look in the phone book for a local shop. They tend to have more of an obscure selection. Lots tend to concentrate on local music, but many also have a good import selection. In my area there is a great New World record shop.

  8. HELP on Salvaging Defective DRAM · · Score: 1

Is there a way to get the badMEM program to be used on a boot disk. Reason I ask is, linux wont complete install on system (Red Hat 8), there is bad memory I would like to stop from being used so the install can complete.. Windows install crashes as well. Memtest shows bad areas. The memory is stuck on the MOBO, so I can't simply take it out. Any idea on how to get badmem loaded on a boot disk??

  9. I know what the missing part in the article is.. on LA Times Examines Silicon Valley · · Score: 2, Funny

It's duct tape. Silicon valley needs more duct tape. I'm not sure why the people in Silicon Valley did not see this a long time ago! Duct tape will solve all your problems, its even good to bandage up a broken arm.

  10. To beat the dead horse... on Cell Phones Changing Social Group Communication · · Score: 1

About this whole cell phone issue. The user is at fault if they are interrupted. If you want to be left alone, turn it off. If you are feeling particurlarly adeventerous (and female) set it to vibreate and stick it down your pants.

I use that button all the time. It is an off button, quite an elementary concept. A little piece of clicking plastic is all it is. On...off...on...off. I dont need to know immediately if my neighbor is attempting to stick his hand up my dog's a$$ while playing dixie on a harmonica. Well, actually I would want to know about that, maybe I'd even try to get home to tape it and sell it.

So if the above happens, call me immediatly, hopefully the power is turned on, if not, it's off for a good reason.

Also consider who sould be testing the modem. If it is tha cable company, do you think they will admit to actually destroying the modem. *ha*

.. a partially filled CD-R. Part is prewritten and guess what? The rest is blank! Novel concept, if it is not full, there is space left!

On a serious note though, If they made CDRW-ROMS, that would be great for games, no more storing the data on your HD, instead you can have your saves on the game disk itself. Nice if you use different computers, plan to format your HD, etc...

  16. Small Problem here... on RAMdisk RAID? · · Score: 1

  18. That would be nice but... on Bookseller Purges Records to Avoid PATRIOT Act · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think the problem is finding decent congressman. Remember, these people come from the population. The politicians don't suck, the population sucks if this is the best we have to offer. An ignorant population is easy to control. I bet the people who ran out and bought duct tape and plastic think the PATRIOT act is a great idea. Considering what it is the name, "PATRIOT act", makes me want to vomit.

I have com to the the conclusion that in general us Americans give up lots of our rights (think freedom) without a fight for the illusion of protection. We are no better protected than we were before this abomination to our freedom, American politics at its finest.

Think about that while you eat your red, white, and blue cake.

Think about the machines they used to decode messages in WWII... the paterns came from somewhere. I think the same applies today to a degree.
