  1. German Release on Fahrenheit 9/11 Discussion · · Score: 2, Interesting

According to this press release it won't be available in Germany until July 29th. What the hell is taking so long? Maybe some of the more "arty" cinemas will be able to get a copy before that. Ich möchte sehr gern den Film sehen. I hope they don't suck it up by dubbing the film, but just stick subtitles on it instead.

A friend of mine moved to New York City and only kept a land line telephone so he could connect online with his modem. He used his cell for all his calls. I visited him a few months later and he had gotten rid of his telephone line because as soon as he got an Airport card he realized how many open routers there were all over the place.

He said, "As long as I live in this city, I'll never pay for Internet again." We'll see if that remains true when consumers with wireless routers wise up and turn on some of the security features.

That said, some have expressed disbelief that there is a German hip hop scene at all. There is but it is similar to the US where what you hear on the radio is crap and in order to hear what is really going on you have to keep your ear to the underground.

Lots of cool stuff coming out of Hamburg Hannover and Berlin.

  14. In many ways this is expected. on Kodak To Stop Selling Film Cameras In U.S. · · Score: 1
Its the wave of the future and all that. Its fast, compact, instant gratification, cheaper in the long run. Soon pictures taken with consumer cameras will probably have a high enough resolution to be used on billboards...or something.

I think using film in photography as an artistic medium will not go away though. At least for a while. The film cameras and film itself however will soon start to get rare and more expensive.

I just spent last weekend learning how to develop and print black and white photos at the local university. It is a lot of fun and I learned to really appreciate that side of photography. The actual act of taking the picture is only a small fraction of the entire process. Developing and printing your own photos, and doing it right, is a lot of work. I feel that I learned the most about how all the concepts and ideas of light, shadow and contrast fit together when I actually finally learned how to do it all myself. When all we have to do is plug in the camera and upload the pictures, and then edit them in Photoshop, that whole part of the process sort of gets pushed to the back.

But on the other hand I also like just being able to take 250 pictures, delete the shitty ones, and email the rest across the world to friends and such.

Technology! So cool! So evil! So cool!

I was working for a streaming company when we sort of got the feeling it wasn't going to last long. Showing up at work for two weeks with nothing to do doesn't help morale. Anyway I was called into some shabby office and told what was up. I took my envelope with me to my desk where all my things were already packed up. As a parting gesture while the managers and bosses observed me, I played an MP3 from the film Halfbaked where Scarface yells "Fuck You, Fuck You, Fuck You, your cool...and Fuck You, I'm out!!" It felt a little better. After work we went to a nearby bar to get pissed and the company attorney was there. He had a shit-eating grin and was bragging because as we were all getting fired he got a 10k raise. Fucker.
