That news item was the Oklahoma city bombing of the Federal Building.
I first learned of the Murrah building bombing when the building around the jury box I was sitting in began to shake and quiver -- then was a sound like an airplane hitting the building I was in -- OK County courthouse, 4 blocks south.
It took about 15 minutes evacuating and following the smoke plume to pinpoint the point of the explosion - and another 5 minutes to get to my van, and realize -- I won't be driving for a long time.
It was about an hour before I could find a working phone to let my wife know that, whatever else had happened, I wasn't dead yet, and good 3 hours before I could find a way home.
Then I could watch it on TV -- which was about all I did for 3 days. But in all that 3 days of live local coverage, there was not a single commercial. (Nor a single network show!)
I had no idea you couldn't use Acrobat for authoring stuff. That's pretty surprising, I'm not sure I believe you.
Believe it. Acrobat Professional is simply a suite of conversion and mark-up tools. You can develop your document anyway you want to; then "print" or "distill" to.pdf format.
You can edit existing text, but there's no way to create a new line of text. You can't place or paste a picture (unless you lie and tell Acrobat it's a "Movie").
You can add form fields, javascript, links and other interactive gewgaws, but that's all in layers sitting on top of your original layout.
You can add, delete, extract or replace pages, but you have to thave the page you're gonna replace it with already distilled/converted.
Probably the nearest thing to doing layout in Acrobat would be doing it in Illustrator, and saving directly to.pdf.
I've used Mac's system "speakable Items" in both OS 9 and OS X,which uses a floder full of icons/scripts. Speak the name of the icon, and it actsw as a double-click. The biggest problem is using it in any kind of noisy environment. Hallway traffic interferes with it, and forget having the radio or stereo on.
It was pretty effective as far as it went, but not a total solution. I used commands to launch all my common programs, and common File: and Edit: commands.
(Photoshop. Select all. Copy This. Quark Express. Paste Here. Print it now. Close this Window. Quit this Program.)
And don't forget to turn it off when people come to talk to you -- one sentence misinterpreted as a command could do -- well anything.
(Select all. Delete. Save. Close Window)
Worse than not saving, you can accidentally blow away weeks of work and not know it 'til you reopen the document.
Of course there are safeguards, like requiring a keyword before accepting voice commands (Gilbert: Print it now).
Lots of fun, but it's off right now -- great wow factor but interferes more than it helps.
If you're going to reply to someone, please either quote them, or do not create a new subject (which removes the "Parent" link from your post).
I scrolled bakkards through this whole damn discussion and still have no idea who is this "they" to whom you refer, who may or may not own some unknown property or value.
It's like the singer in a band playing in front of 3,000 people, responding to a heckler in the front row.
All 95% of the audience hears is "Yeah? Well, so's yer ol' man!"
How then would you suggest we separate the "S" which pluralizes a given acromyn from that acronym, so that is not mistaken for a different acronym -- in this case, something like "CERN Document Server."
I don't think the lower case "s" (CDs) is enough to create the distinction, as people frequently use acronym case similar to title case (e.g. when discussing songs in a trading group, the title "Heart of the Sunrise" may be acronymmed to "HotS"). [note to self: stop verbing nouns]
This, I think, is a clear case of language and punctuation needing to evolve to catch up with new methods of communication. Like so many laws on our books, the language has been outpaced by technology and convention.
So if not with an apostrophe, how we distinguish a pluralized acronym from a singular acronym which simply happens to end in an "s"?

Well, pldms has set me straight on the matter. i DL'ed the proper ClockWorks driver from MOTU, configured it through applications/utilities/Audio MIDI Setup, and now I have MIDI input.
At this point, I see no way, however, to reroute the signal back to the MIDI keyboard. Is that an inherent limitation in Garage Band? I find no channel or voice selection other than GB's Software Instruments.
Does it use MIDI for input only? That's still gonna leave me in a hurt with the old Cube -- more than 4 voices and it chokes up. I really was hoping to continue to use the M! and MT-32 for sound source/virutual tracks, and relieve the strain on my CPU until the final mix.
What about it -- is GB MIDI one way only?
(Please note that I have not pursued it in great detail, being in a hurry to respond to this thread.)
No insult perceived, easter. Thank you for looking!
Her life, her childhood, was itself dreadful. Writing this book was very therapeutic for her, and it has been appreciated by many who have had a similar abusive childhood.
It is certainly not for everyone, and it is not light entertainment. But there is a segment of the population that can benefit from knowing that others share their pain. This is why we encourage readers to share freely with those who they feel would benefit from the lessons.
If you would not be interested in a story of abuse and recovery, then you have read the blurb well. It is advertising copy, aimed at those who can empathize with her history.
On the old 400 mhz Cube, performance is so sluggish as to be confusing. Simple "Stop" and "Home" keyboard commands are slow to be recognized. On the bright side, it has the least latency of any system i've tried to multi-track with. I have at least achieved proof of concept (yes that's me, guitar, bass & 2 vox)
(non-original material and obvious copyright violation, but it's an Apple-friendly artist, sosumi).
Now my real gripe:
i finally got around to tyring out connecting the trusty old Korg M1, the original MIDI pack mule. It turns out that GarageBand has a very short list (20) of compatible MIDI interfaces, all high-end numbers from the likes of MOTU and DigiDesign.
But sadly, my Mark of the Unicorn Fastlane (less than two years old) was not listed in the recognized list of MIDI interfaces.
Since the Cube chokes up at about 6 voices of audio data, that's gonna be my limit. Once again, to play with Apple, you not only have to have the latest Apple gear, you have to keep up with the latest gear in all other related fields too. I understand needing a new computer every 4-5 years, and this is a 10-year old synth, but without sinking what looks like another 300-500 on an up-to-date MIDI converter, (or half that on a USB MIDI keyboard), I'm out of the MIDI input/ouptut game.
The thing is, I though that MIDI was a standard. I didn't realize it had layers that were already obsolete. OK, I understand GBis cheap software designed to sell computers, but as a professional musician with professional gear, I was very disappointed realize it's taking another round of hardware for my full potential as a creative musical genius to be recognized.
And, to those who say "If you're professional musician, why don't you use professional software," well, buy my wife's ebook and may be I can!
