"I have the power to track people through P2P, too. I've found people in my apartment complex on the networks. I've even met a few friends that way. Too bad that doesn't mean that I'm a multi-billion dollar company."
I call bullshit. Unless that is of course you know the IP addresses of the people in your apartment complex and the IP addresses of your friends. I mean, there's a reason the RIAA has to subpoena the other information from the ISPs, if they could do this like you claim to be able to, they could just send them the legal notices directly.
So please, enlighten us as to how you can track people through P2P.
"Sorry, but in the United States of America driving is not a privilege -- it is a right. My job is 18 miles away -- I have no means of getting there with mass transit -- a taxi would cost me $20 each way. I can't have a life unless I have a car. That's a true statement for any American unless they live in a large city."
While I completely agree with you on everything else from your story, I disagree with this point. While it SHOULD be a right, it CURRENTLY is not, it IS a privilege, so your statement is false. If you cannot get to your job without a car and there is no mass transit, there are things you can do to remedy it, such as move, or get a different job. There are no laws stating the government has to provide you with transportation to a job you chose to take, to and from a location you chose to live in.
Now, I don't mean that in an offensive tone and apologize if it came off like that, but your statement was flat out wrong.
Now, I do have a question relating to your story though. He threatened that you could lose your license if you didn't take the other tests. He was lying about the law. Is there any way you can take action against him for that? A police officer lying about the law is kind of a serious issue. And good for you for calling him on it. I can't believe he had the gall to take that kind of attitude with you AFTER he lied about the law, which is he sworn to uphold and protect. Did you at least file a complaint against him with his precinct?
And when he said that "don't let me catch you around here again" I would have responded, "Officer, with all due respect, I have every right to be around here, and don't appreciate the hostile tone you have taken with me when I have done nothing wrong."
Unfortunately the advertising for this promotion is absolutely abyssmal. Words cannot describe how infuriated I get when the stupid commercial comes on with some of the kids who got sued. Not only is the script fairly stupid, but that song just pisses me off to no end.
"I fought the law, and the, law won."
Seriously, is this and ad for the promotion? Or is it an anti-piracy ad? I mean god, I'm sorry, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to commit a violent act every time that spot comes on.
I met this girl at school. Blonde, beautiful, kind of stuck up because she thinks she's all that (she's not). However, I've noticed this girl talks up everything she does. She doesn't just have a Swiss Army Knife, its a knife her army buddy gave her worth $600 and they're illegal in any state but Arizona (give me a break). You get the picture.
So anyways, this girl, who isn't the brightest in the world was bragging about how she's a successful businesswoman. I asked what she does and she responded, "E-Commerce Franchising".
Holy crap did that set off my buzz-word alarm. So I asked her to explain. She said she buys product from a company and sells them to people and gets more money if she gets affiliates to sell for her. I asked what company she buys from and she said Quixtar. Well, that was all I needed to hear. Do a quick Google for +Quixtar +scam. Quixtar is the legal reincarnation of Amway. Not only that, but there is a MOUNTAIN of numerical evidence showing how it is nothing more than a scam and it is next to impossible to make money on it and VERY easy to lose money on it. If there's a YahooGroups recovery group for people who lost it all to these guys....you know it can't be a great business.
I can't tell you how much effort it took to not burst out laughing when she said that. Perhaps it was knowing that if I did, I'd lose any chance whatsoever of getting her into bed.
I am a marketing professional and while I chuckled at parents post, I would like to point out that you'll have rejects in ANY industry. Trust me, marketers aren't stupid, they make money by figuring out how to sell things to people. We know that people get pissed off by spam. The smart members of our industry realize that pissing off potential customers isn't a good thing. The rest think "hey, if they get pissed off, they weren't going to be customers anyway!". These are the marketers who tend to fail, or at least tend to work for companies which they can string along and manipulate.
I know its popular on Slashdot to hate all marketers, but Slashdotters should realize that we're not ALL evil. Hell, I'm in the industry, and i'm a big privacy advocate, and my motto is "if you simply strive to be a good company, and treat your customers well, the money will follow".
"I've seen it in Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston and New York. I've even seen it in places that you've never heard of, like Nampa, Idaho and Portsmouth, Rhode Island."
Ok, here's an interesting question. I'm a college student who's almost done with school. Up till now I've been fortunate enough to have my father take care of my taxes. When I'm out on my own, would it be best to do them on my own? Or should I make the investment and hire someone? Also, what is a good resource to learn the basics about doing taxes? Is there a Taxes For Dummies book?
"Get the Rich Dad Poor Dad books, best on the market IMO."
I was always under the impression that this was one of those "get rich quick" books. Perhaps I am wrong though. Could you perhaps tell me a little about it? I don't exactly trust Amazon's reviews these days for obvious reasons.
Wow, memories. I still have my card as well. It was the Battletech center at North Pier mall in Chicago. The cockpit was very comfortable, adjustable, and had a sliding canopy that sealed you in. You had the main screen, and the secondary screen which showed radar and weapons and several other modes.
There were also toggle switches all over the place that actually toggled your weapons systems, allowing you to group them on different triggers. It was an UNBELIEVEABLE system, especially for when it was around. I still have my instruction manual for the whole setup. And afterwards you could go to the little replay room and they had the whole battle displayed on many different monitors, highlighting different parts of the battle.
And to top it off, everybody got a printout sheet of their mech, with a play by play of their battle. Well worth the $5. Not to mention the fact that they ran Red Planet as well, which was a martian hoversled racing game, and Cyberia (a laser tag place) was right across the hall.
I'm sorry, but as much as your post meant well, you need to wake up and smell the genetically modified coffee.
We are stuck in a vicious cycle today with all the beauty products and plastic surgery and beautiful people we see on tv. If this tech becomes available commercially, there WILL be parents who do this, and their children will have an advantage against the ones who don't, plain and simple. Therefore if you want your children to be able to compete, they will have to undergo the same thing. Sucks, but thats the way the world works. Feel free to live in your little idealist world, but I feel bad for any children you have who have to grow up knowing that they are physically inferior to genetically modified children simply because daddy thinks its bad. Now, if your child feels its bad as well, great, problem solved, but otherwise you're going to have a kid with one hell of a inferiority complex.
I just hope to god the future of programming languages does not revolve around Japanese. Seriously, I'm teaching myself Japanese now, and you have no idea how frustrating it is to learn that one word can have MANY different meanings, all based on context, and there are no hard rules as to how its used. Oh.....and there are just as many different spellings of the word too. Yeah, I'd love to have a programming language be like that.

Would someone calling a business with that number be establishing a business relationship? If so, they could then sell all phone numbers of people who prank called them to telemarketers.

Trash in space is going to become a much more serious issue once spacetravel becomes commercialized.
If anybody is interested in an anime which deals with this issue, I HIGHLY recommend Planet ES. It deals with a salaryman in space who works as a space debris collector (futuristic garbageman). Apparently space trash is a HUGE problem in the series, and even a tiny screw floating out in space can kill if its moving fast enough. Very interesting. I wonder how closely our future will mirror this.
" Yeah, yeah, yeah..I know: marketing. But, come on. Requiring an e-mail address (with an opt-out radio button) is fine; do they really need all the other crap?"
Customer information is a lot more valuable when you have more than an email address. If they can verify that information in any way, well, that just makes it even more valuable. I wonder how much money they actually make off of this.
" I don't really fear this too much. If there's a drastic difference between reviews of a book it's obvious something odd is going on, and a quick google will usually find what people truly think."
Not only that, but whenever I'm looking for reviews online, I'll always look for negative reviews before I look for positive ones. But I think one skill everybody develops to some degree on the internet is (well, hopefully) is learning to take things with a couple of grains of salt, and to take all the vast information provided and make your own educated decision. That's why forums like Slashdot work so well.
I never suggested that this might be of use to Q-Bert. I have no idea how good this thing would be for a professional scratching contest. But being a DJ is not just scratching, there are many top of the line DJs who spin without scratching. The milliseconds added to response are easily compensated for by any DJ worth his vinyl.
Also, perhaps you've never seen a Live PA set, but groups like Crystal Method and Underworld produce all their loops and samples, and then combine them live with software on a laptop, or with a midi sequencer.
Just as there are musicians who don't know a damn thing about music theory, there are DJs who don't. However, many of the big names do. Many of them are also producers themselves. Plus, what about a DJ who uses a 404 or something to compose music on the spot. If you think Underworld or the Crystal Method can't improvise on the spot, well, you obviously don't know much about how they make their music. And please.....most professional violins do NOT go for 1 million dollars. And I doubt most go for 50k either. Please show me a price listing of these instruments that are expensive (or more expensive) than most luxury cars.
While there are a few really nice models like the Harrier and some of the Star Wars models, the vast majority of them look like the ones I made when I was little, especially the battletech ones. Those were a complete joke. So this guy makes a bunch of custom mini-figs......and makes front page of Slashdot? Wow, maybe I should submit a webpage with all the conversions I've made to my Warhammer models if thats all it takes to make front page.
Sorry if this comes off as flamebait, but there really isn't anything special about this.
"and the world of creativity coming to an end, where it is not possible to write a program without every line infringing somebody's copyright or patent."
"Entire electronic systems are available with scratch pads. However, you will never get the respect of a real DJ, they don't go for blinking lights!!"
Which just goes to show you know absolutely nothing of "real DJ's". Many of them DO go for blinking lights as it enables them to carry FAR more music with them in a much more compact form which is much harder to damage. While there are still some issues with the scratch pads, they are remarkably close to the real thing and MANY of the top DJs in the world use mp3s in some form in their sets. Just so you know, tech has been in the turntable world for a LONG time. In fact, the entire modern electronic music scene has been embracing tech for a while now.
Anybody else wondering what this guys real email address is?
