"Have you thought about doing what most other people do, and get a job? "
But if he has an opportunity to receive funding from third parties, and because of that is able to go through school without a job, why should he have to?
Don't get me wrong, I fully believe in people developing a serious work ethic. However, it can be said that being a college student is in itself a full-time job.
And maybe he should even do both! Look for scholarships AND maybe get a part-time job. This way, he is able to exit school possibly with the beginnings of a nest-egg and he won't end up in horrible horrible debt like most of America's college students.
As to people who have made comments about dropping their entire social lives to pick up a mop and earning a few bucks, well, there may be one or two people who can pull it off, but nearly EVERYBODY needs a social life of some sort.
School is extremely stressful. Especially nowadays when there is much less certainty of a decent job out of college. To tell someone they shouldn't enjoy their college years is dispicable. They're some of the best years of your life. It is also a time when you develop the social skills which will be necessary for post-college life.
Going to parties (occasionally), drinking (in moderation), doing drugs (not the hard ones, and in moderation), and sex (not so much in moderation) are all very important experiences for a still developing individual. So think twice before you trade it all for a mop and bucket, or a waitress uniform. Considering business tends to be roughly 20% what you know and 80% who you know, suddenly it doesn't seem like such a bad decision.
"The tedious process of finding the songs, downloading them and then repeating the process if the rip was of poor quality or incomplete was not worth my time anymore.
That is not to say that I started buying CDs all of a sudden, far from it. "
Same here. When I have trouble with incomplete songs though that are obviously RIAA plants, I get angry, and thus, I make it my duty to find a good quality version of the song I'm looking for, even if it means a little more work, and a little less convenience.
"And since of late I've been more interested in DJ mixes that are not even available on CD anywhere (try buying DJ Tiesto or DJ Sasha to name just some very well known people)"
Well, here's where you're wrong. It is in fact very easy to purchase mix cds by Tiesto or Sasha, or any of the other big name DJs, try Amazon for starters.
However, often times you cannot get the mixes you want. For example, I'm a big fan of the BBC's Radio 1 Essential Mix. I cannot find the newer mixes on cd ANYWHERE! Low and behold, I found a site called Freshly-Mixed which lets you download the three latest Essential Mixes free on weekends as a registered member, and as a pay member (a whopping $2/month) you get unlimited access to their entire mix archives whenever you want. I really wish they made it possible to purchase those mixes on cd, but I guess I can't complain since a service sprung up to offer me a product at a very affordable price with a great value in a format I want, with ZERO DRM.
"Record Sales are indeed down because people would rather burn a CD of great music than the Bubble-Gum Pop and "Pseudo-Punk-My-Girlfriend-dumped-me-and-I-am-in-p ain" Overpriced Crap the Record industry has available in the Record Stores."
Now, I agree there is a lot of music out there much better than what is currently being pushed, and I agree that it is overpriced, but what I CAN'T STAND is people who crap all over a type of music because of a theme in the lyrics.
Look, some people like that pseudo-punk sound, even I like it on occasion. And some people's girlfriends dump them and they are in pain.
A lot of people look for songs/bands whos lyrics they can identify with. You are out of line judging music by the theme of its lyrics. All it does is make you sound elitist. So get off your high horse and realize there are different types of music out there, and not everybody is going to agree on whats good music. But that in no way gives you the right to crap all over someone elses choice of music.
"These have been around in some form or other since the 1960s. Every few years somebody introduces a new one. The problem was initially economic, or technological. Now it's simpler. People do not want to be seen, and do not want to see where creative conversationalists might place their camera. "
Actually, I think the problem is a very different one. So far, nobody has really had the existing infrastructure to bring high quality video (not the choppy crap) at a free/very low price. Yes there was those free video conferencing things over the net, but lets face it, unless you had an EXTREMELY fast connection, they just weren't smooth enough.
However, recently Time Warner Cable entered into a partnership with Sprint to offer VoIP. Think about it, TWC is now a provider of data/voice/video streams. They have TONS of money, and they also have a huge infrastructure already in place (cable) to deliver this to users on their TV or computer. I feel with their current position, if anybody could put a solid effort into making video phones work, and have the slightest chance in hell of pulling it off, it would be them.
Let's not forget that the big problem with these things catching on is that the person you're talking to needs to have one too for it to work. Well, what if they gave them away free for a while to build up a user base, and then started adding a little to a cable package fee for it? I think it could catch on then.
I have a very old ball mouse. I am very interested in the outcome of this because I am in the market for a good optical gaming mouse.
However, I also need a new mousepad as my current one is chewed up beyond belief. So, what makes an excellent mouse pad for an equally excellent optical mouse? I know some have issues with reflecting the light and such.
Except a lot of advertisers look at how many pagehits a site gets, as well as how many potential eyeballs are viewing their ad. Remember, clickthru's aren't the only thing that matters, simply viewing an ad is important to an advertiser. I know, I work in advertising.
While I applaud you for taking action on this blasphemous article, I would like to offer a small piece of advice for future responses to things like this.
These journalists receive TONS of email each day. Thus, they tend not to read a lot of it. If you would like to have your letter be looked at with more consideration, I would advise you to write with proper capitalization. Its a very minor suggestion, but it makes your writing look more professional, and less like a hastily written flame.
One of the important features of the logitech mouse I believe was that it had two optical sensors instead of one, which helped prevent the cursor from jumping all the way across the screen. Does anybody know how many sensors this new Razer mouse will have?
Also, I'm too lazy to RTFA and the blurb didn't hinted at, but didn't say that the new Razer 1000dpi mouse will be full optical, so is that the case?
"I've been watching this happen over and over again. Country after country have been walking away from Microsoft over the last few years and it seems to be accelerating."
As have I. I feel like the website for Open Office should have a world map that indicates which countries have already ousted M$ and have switched to Open alternatives. If such a map already exists, someone please provide a link!
What people are upset about is the fact that we are not getting GOOD commercials. The Honda Cog commercial was an award winning commercial.
Its not that people don't like advertising, its that we don't like BAD advertising. There are quite a few ads that are very well done and extremely entertaining. Hence the reason people look forward to the Superbowl ads, because they are usually very entertaining.
Unfortunately, what the exporting of culture leads to is a product leaving your country and entering another, WITHOUT the attached history/knowledge associated with it. Thus, it is not really the culture that is being exported per se, rather, it is the products that are produced as a result of that culture.
Example: In anime, there are many themes which are repeated throughout various series. They are MUCH different than most Western themes. This is because of their culture in Japan, and the way their society works. What we see is only the end product. We do not see why a character might feel a certain way about a situation, because we do not understand the cultural differences. Thus, all we see is the final product, which might seem quite alien/exotic to us, however we never really learn the true cultural knowledge behind it.
A new movie is coming out that deals with some of the social implications about the ability to do this.
It is called Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It is the story of a couple who are having problems with their relationship, and have their memories of each other erased to see if it helps things.
"Japan has a niche with a certain segment (nerdy people) but their culture doesn't have broad appeal to the masses. "
What you say holds much truth. My friend from Osaka confirmed this when I asked about the very same thing. He said that while anime and those sorts of things are more popular and mainstream than in America, it is CERTAINLY not as big as everybody over here in the US thinks. If you were to go to some bar there and attempt to start chatting with some girl about anime, she would most likely look at you funny.
However, as a side note, if you want to find hot girls interested in anime and japanese culture, one need only go to a large anime convention. You will NOT be disappointed.
"This technology is thankfully still in its infancy."
I think Michael misspelled 'unfortunately'. But what am I saying...god forbid we have a day when scripts take over Slashdot. Of course, they'd probably program them to dupe and put in random M$-bashing statements.
From the article: "The payment is not made in the currency of money, but in the memory and the computer power required to work out cryptographic puzzles. "
Phew!!! For a second there I thought I was going to have to do a math problem for each email I was going to send. I woulda been fucked!
You know, if this were a US probe, this would be war. How DARE those martians shoot down the probe. They must be nervous about us Earth folk detecting their WMD. People of Earth, WE MUST LIBERATE MARS!!!
P.S. I will TRULY be amazed/stupified if this gets modded insightful.
'Actually, what made it news was that this was the first update in over two years.
Yesterday, everyone believed this mod was dead. Today, it's not. "
I see, so this is really just a well placed PR move by 3D Realms to keep us from doubting the inevitable release of Duke Nukem Forever. Very clever indeed!
My christmas gift (or rather, hanukah gift) was what I got while riding in the car with my family to a Christmas dinner party. Apparently, the couple in the car next to us was bored during their roadtrip so the woman passenger decided to give her husband a handjob, and then a blowjob. I watched in amazement as she actually looked up at me a couple times whilst jerking him.
However, imagine if you will the look on my face when my 12 year old brother, who had seen the woman in the passenger seat prior to their "activities" asked, "where did she go? there was a woman sitting right there! She just disappeared!"
"My 6 year old daughter presented me with my long lost black handled phillips head screwdriver. "
Wow, your daughter is a genius. She filled in the missing ???.

Just out of curiosity, what determines how you get mod points? I've had excellent karma on Slashdot for over a year now. Do you need to meta-moderate a lot? I've only done it a few times. Is it just completely random and due to the large number of people, I just haven't gotten lucky yet?
"I would ask somebody to inflate your doll with helium. Then I would release the beast in some dignified public place with very high celing - like bank or opera house"
For even more fun, coat it with the same stuff the Hindenberg was painted with. That way when they eventually try to shoot it down, it rains down fiery death from both nipples upon the unsuspecting victims.
I am curious why someone making an interesting post such as yourself feels it necessary to have such a trollish link in your.sig. I was interested when I noticed the domain for your link, wondering what Sony would have to do with dating, when I noticed the redirect link.
NOBODY CLICK ON THIS LINK. It opens up a swarm of scat-porn popups.
The redirect link itself is a redirect. The link his.sig goes to is (http://www.sony.net/Redirect/g04_GS/http://techge ek.notlong.com/) which further redirects to another page that starts the popup hell.
