"This is a freshman girl at MIT... who is looking for loving... wants to get to know a gangly CS grad student... I AM STUPIFIED. Know what this means?"
That there's probably a reason she's sex-depraved at a school full of horny geeks? And it most likely has nothing to do with them staying in their rooms and looking at net-porn. Remember, many of the reasons girls don't like geek guys work the other way around too.
"Yeah I mean who reads these comments anyway? Can you imagine a site full of these asinine people writting about stuff they don't even know the first thing about?"
Or worse! Imagine if they never even read the text of the original entry anyway! Oh the horror!
Personally, I'm more intrigued by their augmented reality wearable computing research. Instead of something subliminal, it displays the information next to the persons image, so that you can read it, scroll through it, etc. You could retrieve info based on past conversations, their name, their phone number, and other useful things. I personally think that has a MUCH greater chance of being picked up by the average consumer than this thing.
Does anybody have any information on affordable wearable computers (with the glasses and all) that you don't need a computer engineering degree to put together?
"Even worse, with the subliminal nature of this tech, you might not even realize at first why purchasing a copy of M$ Office 2003 seems like such a great idea all of a sudden, why you are suddenly craving some KFC only minutes after eating, or why you have completely changed your opinion of Dubya..."
You know.....you don't HAVE to wear them. Well, maybe you will, if they pass a law that states that all tinfoil hats have to be equiped with these.
What everybody has neglected to mention is the long term effects. And I hate to say it, but this is exactly what we all bitch and moan about the big corporations doing. They're all motivated by short-term profit. Now lets what happens when you make a game and don't offer a demo.
If its good, people will buy it and spread the word.
If its bad, a few suckers will buy it based on what they've read in press releases and spread the word that it sucks, and others won't buy it.
Now, lets say that another game is released by the same company....but there is still no demo. If it wasn't a good game, people won't buy it because they are basing it on other peoples information from the previous game and they don't have a demo to see if its any good or not.
The moral is: The answer to increasing game sales is not related to whether or not a demo is offered. It is related to whether or not the game is a good game, or if it sucks.
I played the demo for bf1942 for a whole year at school before I finally decided I wanted to see the other weapons and vehicles and mods, and bought the game. And it was worth it cuz its a good game.
"not a week of real time; the avatar must be logged in and active for the amount of time of the sentance; 24 hours means being logged in sitting in 10x10 grey room for 24 hours, not logging in a day later"
And how would this be any more effective. So they log in, leave their comp on, and go watch TV until their sentence is up. Then go back to griefing.
" Wouldn't that be illegal under something? The DMCA, or some Patriot Act whatnot? You're breaking into something that supposed to protect society, etc..."
Currently? No. We have not taken over Canada yet. But just wait until we discover some natural resource they have that they won't give us, good ol' G.W. will take care of that, and then ALL of our silly little laws will apply there.
Exactly, parent forgot about human error. What if I sped up to try to avoid an accident, yet all the police see is that I was traveling at a much higher speed than the other person? Whoops, they don't see my attempt to avoid the crash, they see me speeding, and him not.
I can't believe this got modded interesting. "Oh god, won't someone think of the children!". Please. Advertising isn't going away, no amount of wishful thinking will make it. It's better they grow up with it now so that their minds can become more resistant to it when they are adults and have real purchasing power.
Unfortunately, word of mouth doesn't always work in a world of M$-like monopolies. No matter how good your product is, if nobody can hear about it over the din of the ads for some other product, it won't usually sell. Now, there are exceptions, but those are too risky to rely on.
I have an even better idea. How about using the play as a player/monster deal as a way to combine an RPG with a FPS? If you want character development and want to sink 40+hrs a week into the game, make a character and advance and kill monsters.
If you just want to be able to log in, have some fun for a few hours, and move on with your life (much as FPS's let you do), log in, create a monster, and kill players. You could handle the problem of people letting their friends kill them as a red dragon by only letting people play a high up monster based on how many player kills they've gotten as low level monsters.
I would buy this game in a second, as I could have my character I advanced, and I could play monsters for good cheap fun.
Actually, I disagree completely. They are not MMOFPSG. The only thing that came remarkably close to that is Planetside...and I would not even qualify that as a true FPS. I have desperately lusted after a true MMOFPS, but guess what, Planetside doesn't have headshots. Nope, you have something called a "cone of fire". You point in the general vicinity, hope you hit enough times before they hit you enough times.
It is way less player-skill based then they'd have you believe.
Now....if they ever got something like bf1942 or halflife 2 to be truly massive, I think you'd see a truly awesome game.
You are correct that MMORPGs are nothing but time sinks. And they are designed in such a way to be psychologically addictive. Want proof? Read this. Until I see a game that breaks free from the model described in that essay, I won't pick up another MMORPG.
For once the japanese got it right in terms of outfitting their cops with cars. In order to deal with the problem of street racers, there are some R-34 skylines setup for police duty. Now THAT is a highway patrol car. It would eat a WRX for breakfast.
" "See, you people say you have enough consoles, and a powerful PC, but whenever a new console comes out, you people always buy it."
Well Rob, rest assured, if that's the only selling point you have....I WON'T be buying your console.
God....marketing 101 is PRODUCT PLACEMENT! And you have not done a damned thing to place your product. It has NOTHING that separates it from anything else. You offer us nothing new. Those other consoles that we all bought? Guess what? They all offered something new. Nintendo had its awesome lineup of games, the PS2 had a cdrom drive, the Xbox had impressive specs....but you add nothing new to the party. Sorry.
Is there any way we can find out what schools are going to be subjected to this?
I know I for one will be monitoring my 12 year old brothers school a lot more carefully. I will be asking him if they are doing ANYTHING of this sort in his school, and if they are, I will be taking the time to find out what they are saying in class, and I will be sure to inform him with good information about how to counteract their propoganda. If they refuse to let him speak, or do anything else which makes him look bad as a result of his correct information, I will insist on sitting in on the class. I will also be writing articles to the local newspaper, the school, and parents.
" Simply implant the tags into student's bodies. Surround the tag with an air-sensitive, explosive capsule so counteract removal attempts."
It would also have to explode after three days if there was more than one surviving student, or if any of them tried to leave the island....err....sorry, been watching Battle Royale too much.
I wonder if any of them resemble Blinky. I'm sure they could find several EXTREMELY um......unique.....species if they were to search the water around nuclear power plants. I won't be satisfied until I can eat a fish with three eyes on its head.
I actually RTFA, and yes I know they say they would be taking extensive privacy measures.....but what they are doing is collecting a database of EXTREMELY personal information. And they are a privately held organization. What if they happened to get bought out? Or what happens if they change their policy at some point, and begin merging databases with other companies. Wow, the government then has one extremely detailed database of many many people.
And how long before this is required by airlines and such?
"Sir, you cannot fly Delta Airlines if you do not have your privatized National ID card. What's that? You don't have one? Well, you must be a terrorist, because only terrorists wouldn't have one. Please remain calm, as authority figures have already been alerted and are en route as we speak."
My father falls into this category of people. Unfortunately, I maintain his website so I have to deal with the questions to "improve his pagerank now!!!". He just doesn't believe its spam!
The other issue I've encountered, and got into a serious argument with him about was when he received a spam for a contest to win scholarship money for college (which he's currently paying tuition for for me). He refused to believe it was spam, and was pissed at me for letting the opportunity slip by. I told him I refused to enter any online contest of that sort, especially considering the promises that they'd sell all my personally identifiable information to whoever they wanted, which I read in their privacy policy. He was still unconvinced.
Sometimes there's no getting through to these people.
Its funny....while Hollywood may hate Tivo...certain cable companies don't. Timewarner has their own DVR on the market now that is doing fairly well. I read an article in the NY Times about it and basically their thought process was, "its out there....its inevitable, we might as well do it ourselves and make some money off of it". Not exactly revolutionary.......but still more of a progressive thought process than I would have expected from TIMEWARNER (yup, their label is part of the RIAA)!!! So.....TiVo may die.....but similar devices won't, because they're supported by cable companies themselves. Now, what they'll do about the features that let people fastforward through ads in the future is a different issue entirely.
"But with more and more stories surfacing about the lacking credibility and accuracy of the 'new' school of voting....one can only come to see the outrage when people start to connect the idea (perhaps even falsely) that their votes are easily manipulated, miscounted, or simple footnotes catered to the wanted result."
Wouldn't this imply that they had to vote in order to care about their votes being manipulated? I hope the electronic voting system gets to the point where you can do it remotely. I'm not sure how......but anything that would encourage more people to vote would be a good thing, as long as they were informed voters.

"j3w l4m3r n00b f4g"
followed by me being kick/banned from my own single player game.
Joy.
