Because the Manufacturer already paid for every copy and buying computers WITHOUT windows is often even more expensive. It's a hidden cost.
Why do you pay for a cayalytic converter in your car? It works fine without it, or you can install one yourself cheaper.
Most people are never given the choice of making a purchase and deciding what bits they want or don't want. Given the choice most people wouldn't have the skills to take advantage of the savings.
I noticed the change this morning before their servers went down. It sucks. I did a quick scan of the other search engines and I don't see any similar usenet search. Excite only tells me to turn on javascript. Even Altavista no longer has usenet.
This is what happen when you don't have any competition.
Does anyone know if Google.com is the only searchable usenet archive out there?
Speaking of Mini-ITX, VIA is introducing a new Mini-ITX board. It's got built-in compact flash slot and other features that suggest it could be the heart of the device they are coming out with. Then again a few other mini-itx boards could be too.
I agree, but you have to consider the EASE of ripping movies compared to TV.
I think people shared movies before TV just because it was easier. Movies come on DVD. Computers come with DVD drives. Insert DVD into computer, rip, play, share.
Compare that to how many computers come with TV Input. You could buy a video encoding card, but I don't think most people would just to record some shows. If TV encoders start becoming a standard piece of computer hardware, then you can bet ripping TV shows will get way more popular, even the crap.
It's just one of those things you do because you can do it with what you already have.
I did not ask for it, I don't like it and I don't want to pay for it. it's also well-known that your IP address is exposed to all those on the server.
Quit being so dramatic. If everyone was consulted before spending something then nothing would ever get done. The CIA is part of the government, and they are just trying to do what they were created to do. The fraction of money being spent on this is probably less then a penny out of a hundred dollars of your tax money, probably much less. So maybe spending a thousandth of a single percent of their budget on an IRC bot is silly, but they have every right and even a responsibility to do so.
What does the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) do?
The Central Intelligence Agency's primary mission is to collect, evaluate, and disseminate foreign intelligence to assist the President and senior US Government policymakers in making decisions relating to the national security. The Central Intelligence Agency does not make policy; it is an independent source of foreign intelligence information for those who do. The Central Intelligence Agency may also engage in covert action at the President's direction in accordance with applicable law.
IRC is a public discussion forum. It's no more anonymous then any other internet
This isn't like tapping your phone calls where you know who is on at least one end of the conversation. It's monitoring a public chat server, much like usenet but in real time. Just like monitoring foreign newpapers this is something the CIA should be doing. Think of it like monitoring letters to the editor.
Technically unrelated to this article, but Fox News did go to court for making a story appear the oppisite of the facts. They lost at first, but won on appeal. Now they are suing journalists who refused to publish the false version of the report for court costs.
Fox News was able to get a court to rule that they have no responsibility to tell the truth because there is no specific law that say they have too. So if a news station can not be required to report on things honestly, then I don't think there is much change of getting a company (especially MS) to do so.
Hollywood executives are interested in part in figuring out how file-swappers' behavior might change when extremely fast connections are available, he said. This could help studios guard against future piracy, as well as control today's swappers.
They just want to run some experiments. Sounds like an interesting experiment too. How would file swappers behavior be affected if they could have their downloads delivered in minutes rather the hours or days? I'm sure the results will be surprising.:P
Seemingly in competition with itself, AOL has also been beta testing an Internet Explorer based Web browser it calls "AOL Browser." AOL Browser is independent from the company's client software and adds features such as tabbed browsing and privacy options on top of Microsoft's IE engine.
Wow, all the features of Firefox, with the security of IE. Why build a browser based on IE?? Reminds me of the Holy Grail.

HERBERT: But Father, I don't want any of that. FATHER: Listen, lad. I've built this kingdom up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was swamp. The king said I was daft to build a castle in a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em. It sank into the swamp. So, I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third one. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. An' that's what your gonna get, lad -- the strongest castle in these islands.
LoneCoder does indeed appear dead. LongCoder started posting to slashdot in early 2000. His 7 short comments receiving a score of 1 each caused him to take a 4 year break from posting to slashdot.
A carefully worded post praising Suse Linux netted him a score of 4 he briefly basked in his own reflected glory. Unfortunately his very successs was also his downfall. Unable to handle the thought of another 1 point post after gaining acceptance for the first time through/. moderators, LoneCoder took his own life.
On his computer were found many text files containing various drafts of "In Soviet Russia", "Imagine a Beaowulf", and other unposted commemts along with his predictions on their possible scores.
This person could pay for the DVD/Movie and watch it once, or download it from the Internet and watch it once. Either way this person got one unit of enjoyment out of this, but it's not quite the same to capitalist Remember though, if you keep increasing your units of enjoyment, eventually the fairy of happiness will let you carry up to 50 bombs at once.
The scram jet travels at a rate of 0.0035 parsecs per millenium. So to go 12 parsecs would take 3.4 Million Years.
Parsecs is a measure of distance, not speed. Han was just screwing with Luke. The Star Wars equivalent of headlight fluid, muffler bearings, knuter valves, and piston return springs.
I am a one person software company. I know of one other in my same town. Not dead, but very specialized. I make enough to pay the bills. You just have to find a niche and stick it out. It's a bit scary sometimes, but with a little consulting for local companies every once in a while you can make it work. Oddly enough, going back to church is what really my business take off. Sit through some sermons a little chit chat and people are thrilled to refer you to their friends. It's worth it for the networking.
The big problem I see is that there are people with insight and vision who can see a possible market and design a nice program, then there are the hordes of "cloners" who just want your software pirated with a hexeditor.
The thing that I find amusing is the Elance insanity that's going on making clones. There are so many projects requests out there that say something like...
Need complete 100% clone of this software
See http://www.example.com/
Also all documentation, features, file formats, etc. Any reasonable offer accepted, but please keep the bidding under $500.
or my favorite from an actual RFP - this was the entire request.
I need a ecommerce application in php and MySQL. After I see the basic quote, I will provide more details.
And the projects had close to 20 bids. My guess is they try to lure people in with cheap bids then stick it to them when they are "90% done". People bid on things at $1 per hour.
The point is you can not compete on price in the US. So you have to be the best in your field, and have to secure your app, or file format enough that the average joe can't steal all your work.
When someone sends a SYN, you don't have to respond with an ACK. If they don't like it, they should delete those packets and get on with their day.

I don't know if it was a typo, but that is a PERFECT word for the people I see around here.
I think this is the correct link...

Or perhaps like the constitution if it is written to accomidate the inevitable changes without becoming invalid in the process.
