  1. Re:Great News on Hacker Sentenced To Longest US Sentence Yet · · Score: 1

At 9 years total it seems like the "time:cards stolen" ratio is quite reasonable. Why do you feel differently? Would you feel differently if your card was involved?

In short: the reason I believe it is an unreasonable sentence stems from the fact that you can get as little as 4 years for manslaughter. Why should someone who commits CC theft get a sentence more than twice that of someone else who killed a person?

That's not to say I don't believe the guy should go to jail. I simply question our society's values when hacking into a system and grabbing a bunch of insured CC numbers is considered in the ballpark of a rape or murder, let alone when it can net you even longer jail time.

Capitalism has done more for improving quality of life for more people than any other system in history by freeing people from arbitrarily imposed class structures designed to maintain the ruling class's monopoly on power (wealth=power), and by efficiently allocating people's creative energy and abilities toward wealth production. These unqualified critiques of capitalism are quite narrow-minded, out of scale with the actual problem, and roughly equivalent to biting your own hand that's feeding you.

Don't forget that the imposed class structures found in Capitalism seem much easier to swallow. Under Capitalism, it's obvious that one's position in life is determined solely by his/her ability, rather than some arbitrary fashion like the wealth of one's family...

Perhaps it's better to say it's frustrating to live among people who wear their christian beliefs as a badge of honor, with the obvious insinuation that a lack of belief is unacceptable. My parents and extended family constantly try to push me towards their catholic faith. Boy, was I glad when I was able to move out and go to college.

Now I get to deal with it at work.

Many people I interact with on a daily basis like to constantly remind everyone of their belief in a christian god. I put up with it, but I can't say I care for the feeling that I have to hide my lack of faith to avoid possibly negative consequences.

At the very least, I know I would be drawn into a long, pointed inquiry about why it is I don't believe. After all, it's only natural for a rational being to assume that there's some omnipotent, invisible man that created and controls everything, demands our total and unending devotion (but conspires against giving us any solid proof of his existence). Clearly something is wrong with me if I don't accept a christian god as a given.

Of course, I get to deal with it in politics as well. I've yet to catch a Presidential speech this administration that doesn't like to wave the "I'm a devout christian" badge around as much as Kerry liked to point out his purple hearts.
