    Universities shouldnt offer scholarships for females to the exclusion of males based purely on the premise not as many of them care about the feild.

    I like females at University... especialy since my comp sci department is on the same campus as the largest performing arts facility in the state. The campus has 3 depatments, Arts, Comp Sci, and Teaching, and the teachers hide away in a building even further from the art students, its behind the comp sci ones in fact. BUt anyway...

    They have every right to a higher education. But why should they be more entitled to scholarship than males... i missed out on a FULL 5 year engineering scholarship by 0.25%... had i been a girl, my mark would ahve been considered under one of the 3 extra ones they have for them as good and probably got one. but im not. and i missed out, and i ditched those dry engineering types for the comp sci classes near the girls. :)

    and ontop of that id say a better soloution would be to dole out a few "extra mods" to those with good karma, and say letting those with damn good karma push the moding up above 5.

    the more i think about that.. the better it sounds...

    did you reach a point where you began creatively spacing the letters & words out to create ascii art on each slide, writing in things that were completely different, or even creating fake "negative" slides with totaly rediculous things writen at normal size as whitespace?

    tiny font is the best place for ascii :P

    they may not exactly be an arm and a leg to get access to small things, but getting access to everything for research sure does, thank god the university pays for mine :)

    Realy id say the impetus behind java isnt the use of sane programing techniques being snuck in, its simply A: its utterly pervasive, got a cell phone? youve got java (something like 75% or more of sim cards use javacard technology now). And B: Its freaking huge API. Raise your hand if youve memorised the entire Standard Edition API refference. I didnt think so... Me either...

    The Language does more of your work for you now but it does it without robbing you of the ability to do it your own way fortunatly.

    Funny thing is knowing Sun and solaris 10 i wouldnt be surrprised if they happily let you take your pick, running the grid to be maximum flexibility, providing back/forwards solaris compatibility, BSD/UNIX compat, Linux compat, and probably even Mac and Windows Compat somehow possibly on other servers or wine or soemthing... who knows... they do i dont but i know they sure arent stupid when it comes to making things that work.

    when factoring the cost did you factor in the cost of power, both to run the machines and extra air con load, along with the expected/allowed maintenance costs? its cheaper yes... but not that bad.

    and while i agree it coudld certainyl stand to be cheaper, perhaps half its current price, its about total value not about raw power.

    What i want to see is a way i can pay 5 bucks to get someone ELSE to do my distcc builds for me while i spend 5 hours gaming instead of watching my machine build at high cpu load and leave me some time to relax. or even i pay 5 bucks and i get it done in 1 hour instead of 5 ... see the savings and usefulness there.

    while its possible to use this for rendering ill repeat again the words of others. Its not meant for people wanting to run rendering. Instead for people that need short term high volume proccessing at itermittent intervals.

    Say a small (but lucrative) investment firm with cash to spare but not enough to manage an IT project the size they need for the simulations they need about 25000 hours for every 3 months and that would be sitting idle the rest of the time.

    i messaged you a short list of other games you should try (yes i didnt spam the page with my reply!)

    its amazing to see how far games have come. and with the revoloution ariving in the not to far off future(12-18 months or less) im going to be very happy to play all these old favourites again. Thats a big thing i think. Many gamers have spent a lot of money on their old games and the only issue i had with carts was the eventual media failure from contact wear. I hope they chose to honor the purchases of ALL previous games and make it possible for people to play the games they still own again now that many of the consoles have reached their end through over play ( my extensive nintendo64 collection now gathers dust, against my will, from sheer controler wear and not being able to get any replacements now :( im probably gonna inquire if my lifetime waranty is still valid )

    well if google ever get round to pointing it out TFA says that the internet archive is the ones that will be hosting it... theyre helping the yahoo backed initiative ... hrm sounds to me like commercial lobbying for content they can get for near to nothing. And on the other side of the coin. Google already indexes the internet archive i belive. they should just add the full documents in their entirety (which i think they can since most are public domain/freely redistibute) to their index. The only realy interesting thing is that O'riley is gonna add content to this archive... wow looks like the Internet Archive got some nice freinds out of this deal.

    well said. theres no reason the person who picked the story should have thier opinion any more valued than any other poster, but they do provide a unique point of view and some people will find this interesting :)

    im sure a lot of the eds have issues with talking to much since they probably get enough beef from the mob (non ed people) as it is. but actualy seeing them talk about things or post comments on stories other than their own (which barely happens anyway) would be nice.

    I suppose its just down to the fact that not even you are immune to getting /.ed. Your schedules been slashdoted and you find it hard squeeze in any more.

    As much as people may not notice it it realy is true. i can attest to being the only one with my chosen pseudonym, and ill be damned if anyones going to steal it (unfortunatly just claiming this is an invitation for someone to steal it but at least i already have my hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail, blogger accounts, slashdot, and a fair few others reged under it so i dont have to worry bout having something important name-jacked)

    Ive been using Lucractius for more than 5 years now. Its left a rather odd trail of things accross the net that sometimes i wish i had a way to clean up :/ but i supopse thats a little like having a hangover and wishing you didnt wake up with your arm numb cause you were ontop of it.

    I must say this is the most ive seen of (1) Mr Taco himself in a long time and its pleasant to see your still doing things other than just posting stories. By the way just how is your karma doing, seems to be good if your starting at 2 points :)

    getting burned on a name sucks bad, hope you can get over it.

    oh and damn my uid looks so pathetic compared to some of the people replying here... wish i had signed up 2 years sooner than i did, instead of just dropping in to this "slashdot thing" that i heard about elsewhere during that time... ahh well hindsight is 20/20 as they say.

    If i didnt have to change my name.

    I totaly understand what Taco was talking about with being attached to a pseudonym... fortunatly mines rather good so no ones ever got it :) but it does occasionaly wind up with irretreivable lost passwords or stuck part way through a registration proccess... but usualy a few well written emails and messages to the admins will sort things out. Anarchy Online promptly blasted a broken account off the servers to clear the name away for my use once i explained i was highly unlikely to ever play their game if forced to pick something else.

    If you have the proof its your name not many places actualy object to bending over backwards to make you stay... well if they dont they probably arent worth staying a customer or member of.

    That was what i think his problem was. that WoW gave him no chance to discuss or mediate his problem before being forced to give up his name.

    But seriously.. if i buy it is there a way to change the account name? :P

    right... its a far cry from someone chosing not to eat pork out of perosnal choise from their opinion the animal is something that shouldnt be eaten on the grounds of animal treatment and possibly the health of the product and their beliefs regarding it to someone just not doing it cause their religion says no.

    The main one is the first makes an informed decision. Like someone not choising windows cause of the evidence of poor reliability and the other like someone not trying linux cause "it doesnt have any apps" or "its evil breaking trademarks" or something like that.

    Id aggree with the first not the second myself.

    then again i like meat :) so the issue isnt realy a question for me :)
