This study proves an IQ drop of 5 or more points per week.
Where the fuck are you reading that? Here's exactly what think you provided says:
The comparison of the IQ difference scores showed an average decrease of 4.1 points in current heavy users (p < 0.05) compared to gains in IQ points for light current users (5.8), former users (3.5) and non-users (2.6). INTERPRETATION: Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week. A negative effect was not observed among subjects who had previously been heavy users but were no longer using the substance. We conclude that marijuana does not have a long-term negative impact on global intelligence.
god damn, someone here sure has some problems with their reasoning skills... I think I see why your karma is stuck at -1...
For a small office, having someone with the expertise necessary to install and administer a database (even an easy one such as MySQL) can be formiddable.
You think that's formidable? What's formidable is a few years down the road (when they've outgrown Access) trying to sort out the incomprehnsible, inconsistent mess that their access database has become and trying to accurately translate everything into a real database without loosing any meaning. Even if they just want something in the existing Access database modified in some way it can be a huge hassle to make the needed changes to some Access mess that was patched together by numerous people over the years, none of whom actually know anything about databases.
Its far less formidable of a challenge just to pay someone that knows what they're doing to come up with a correct design right from the start than to sort out a giant mess later.
Yes, I've used Pg. The setup is just not as simple.
You keep saying that. Can you specificly explain exactly what you mean? Installing postgres has been a matter of './configure && make && make install' for years now. Once its installed, su to the postgres user, type 'psql template1' and create your users/databases. What else do you want...
Can anyone reccomend some games suited for a single player that don't require mutant reflexes to operate and that can just be played in small increments? Not being a 'hardcore' gamer, simple and fun is what I want most.
There are some circumstances where I'd say go for the more interesting job, but IMO all the benefits you get at the boring job outweigh it. You may think you're wasting your time and your talent there, but remember: when its all said and done, you work for money.
If you want to do something interesting, use some of the time you're saving by being able to telecommute and do some programming of your own (open source or whatever). Save some of that extra money you're getting to open your own programming business someday.
There is no such thing as a "NAT firewall". NAT is NAT, a firewall is a firewall. They do completely different things and their functionality does not overlap in any way.
What other ways were you talking about? Did you explain them in other Slashdot comments?
How about the fact that by using NAT without a firewall, you're effectively placing the security of your network in the hands of your ISP, or any of its customers who are on the same subnet as you (which is what many broadband providers do). Any of those parties can add a route to your network via your router's external IP and talk to anything they want on your LAN.
Wow, this post is just hillarious. Have the crew jump out of the cabin after the explosion and have the chase planes catch them on the way down?
I love it when any space-related stories get posted here. Half of slashdot suddenly thinks they're rocket scientists. It can often be funny watching them try...
Seems to be working fine here, in fact. A number of people spread the word about their shitty experiences with tigerdirect. Others see it and avoid tigerdirect in the future. I bet this thread that is now modded up to 5 is going to cost tigerdirect more than a complaint to the FTC will.
And by the way, libertarians don't support theft and scams like you're trying to imply. If someone (individual or company) said they'd give you something for a certain price, you pay the price, and they don't give it to you, any libertarian would agree there should be legal recourse.
Even if you don't mean it to go anywhere, it's just sitting there posing a potential hazard.
Hrm... which would you rather take? The potential hazard posed by nuclear disasters which very rarely become actual, or the actual, real hazards created by coal plants?
The problem with some personal moral choices is that the effects of those choices are not entirely independent from the rest of society. The smokers, alcoholics, and drug addicts in our society impose negative externalities on the rest of us in the form of increased medical costs and other financial burdens which we are then forced to pay in the form of higher taxes or deficit spending.
This is just an instance of too much government creating the problems it says we need more government and more laws to solve.
The only reason we have to pay for someone else's substance addiction problem is because the government forces us to do so. Solution: No more tax-funded health care for treatment of addictions. If some members of society sympathize with the addict and want to help them, they can donate their own money to appropriate charities. The problem then belongs to the person who created it or to people who voluntarily want to help them. No more effects on unconsenting third parties, no more need for laws prohibiting it.
It is not fair for some people in society to pass of the costs of their poor choices unto the rest of us and so we make certain choices illegal to prevent those people from making them without consequences.
If the substances the person is consuming is harmful, then there will be consequences inherent in the activity - we don't need laws to create them.
MySQL's security model? Simple? I would describe it as anything except that. Why does mysql consider the host the user connects from a part of all permissions? The same user can have separate permissions on a database, separate privileges on tables, even separate passwords depending on what host they're connecting from.
I have an alarm clock with two alarms built-in. I can set it up exactly as you describe. It's truly marvellous, but it's still lousy at waking me up to perform system maintenance at 4:30 in the morning.
A desktop offers more ergonomic choices than a laptop? Not by a long shot. I can use my laptop laying on my stomach on the couch or in a reclined position. I find that being able to have different positions like this makes my back far more comfortable since my body isn't forced to conform to a desk's design.
I've used desktops my whole life... ergo keyboards, nice chairs, multiple monitors, wristpads, a variety of pointing devices... but my far the best ergonomic choice I made was buying a laptop.
No problem - they don't have to take it.
How the hell were these guys dictating terms to apple? What exactly were the terms they were dictating? The only one dictating terms here is Apple.
Nobody was violating Apple's copyright. Apple is (ab)using the DMCA to shut these guys down.
Solution: jail, and personal weapons.

A life sentence?
Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space
That's the dumbest, most incorrect analogy I've ever heard.

Have we figured out yet how to deal with coal waste?
In the meantime, nuclear waste is buried in concrete bunkers. Coal waste is spewed into the air we breate.
Seems that your reading comprehension could use a little improvement. From the article you referenced:

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Mozilla & friends.
Pop unders? Haven't seen em in years.
Let's try that again with a visual aid:
In order for me to violate copyright law as you suggest, I'd first have to be making and distributing copies which I never said anything about.
No. Doesn't matter what kind of software it is. That copy is sill mine to do with as I please once the sell it to me.
