When it's a CDMA carrier (like Sprint - my carrier).
FWIW, Sprint's the only CDMA carrier that doesn't allow outside phones on their network - Verizon can be coaxed into taking an unlocked Sprint or Alltel phone, and Alltel WILL take an unlocked Sprint or Verizon phone.
Now, GSM carriers? Just drop a SIM card in. Get a quad-band GSM phone from the UK, and throw a Cingular or T-Mobile SIM in, and it'll work in the US no problem.
<span> is a tag that surrounds some text within a block, so that you can give it an id attribute. This is *VERY HANDY* for CSS, as this means that you can do a <span id="code"> around a block of code, and apply some CSS for code to it.
One day, my (Dell) laptop running Win2K decided to barf, so that it would freeze part way through bootup. Nothing, and I mean, NOTHING, not even safe mode, would bring it back. So, I said, "oh, well, at least I've got a working SuSE install on here, and I can get the files off, because it mounts the Windows partition as NTFS..."
So, I get the files off, and use it for a while.
Then, I need Windows again. So, I throw in a Windows XP CD (the one licensed for the laptop), and it freezes if I try to start setup. And, the recovery console was worthless.
So, I try a 2000 (Server, but this was just for testing) CD. Same damn thing.
Finally, I grab a LiveCD I had lying around, and use it to nuke the partitions, and XP installs no problem.
If it weren't for that, I'd have had to find an old 98 CD, boot THAT, and nuke the partitions - if DOS FDISK would even work for that.
Myself, I exclusively use Opera, but Opera's back/forward performance, ESPECIALLY on forums (or other pages with REALLY complex tables), has taken a SERIOUS nosedive on Opera 8. Previous versions allowed you to back and forward to a prerendered page. Opera 8 rerenders the page, and it seems that Opera's table rendering isn't exactly fast.
1.) Basically did not update the core OS between 1997 and 2004. Version 5.x is bascially 3.x with color and a network stack shimmed in. A lot changed over those seven years, and the OS did not evolve as well as it could have. They rested on thier laurels, much like Apple did during the Scully era at Apple, releasing new models every 8 months but not really improving the core operation.
Hmm? Version 2.1 (read: early 1997) had the network stack shimmed in, and 3.5 had color, IIRC.
Version 5.x's big leap over 4.x is the fact that 4.x- is for Dragonball, 5.x+ is for ARM. Now, yes, it's the same basic OS...
2.) They released the big new version (6.0.) in late 2003, and no devices were ever released with it. This was a huge mistake, and points to poor partnerships (ISV and others) and planning. No other company in history has released an PDA OS that was never implemented on a retail device.
3.) They released version 6.1 late last year, and again, nearly a year later, there are no devices running it. Again, big problem.
Note that 6.1 is 6.0 with better smartphone code. So, you could VERY well see a Tungsten running 6.0, and a Treo running 6.1.
As for no devices being released running it, how much could PalmSource do, at the times when they weren't merged with Palm or PalmOne? (As I understand it, Palm/PalmOne kept buying and selling them...)
(All of this posted by a user of a Sony PEG-SJ22 with Palm OS 4.1 and a Dragonball...)
I agree that the stuff with Palm OS 5's architecture is Bad(tm).
However, at least the "decent OS" is coming soon - Palm OS 6 has been with device manufacturers for a while, and is just waiting on someone to put it in a device.
It appears to use a vastly improved Palm OS interface, on (essentially) a BeOS kernel. Of course, there'll still be the Palm OS 5 emulation, and within that, the Dragonball emulation, but touching any of that will be HIGHLY discouraged on Palm OS 6, unless you're targetting Palm OS 5. (which, unfortunately, will be a good idea - POS6 appears to be targetted towards high-end devices)
I prefer the Palm. Just because you can SSH into your Zaurus doesn't mean that it's good.
The hardware platform is certainly interesting, and the fact that it runs Linux is cool, but Linux DEFINITELY isn't ready for the PDA yet.
Palm OS was designed for a PDA. Linux wasn't. Therefore, Linux needs a LOT of work to scale to that specific use, and do it well.
Yes, Palm OS has it's limitations that Linux doesn't have. However, many of those limitations have either been removed in Palm OS 5.4, or will be removed in Palm OS 6.
Hmm... can't I make a diff of File1 and File2, and then use File2 and the diff to make a copy of File1?
In other words, I'd be making a GTA:SA No-Really-It's-Rated-M-This-Time edition ISO into a GTA:SA AO edition ISO by changing the differences between the two.
I alternate between AVG and Avast, depending on the system.
Usually, I go for Avast, because it's got a great feature set, and they don't bury their free version.
You have to actually know EXACTLY where the free version is on the Grisoft site to get AVG Free. However, I go for them whenever I'm dealing with a REALLY old PC - lower resource consumption.
My normal combo is Avast, MSAS (on 2K/XP), (for a bad infestation or a 9x/ME system) AdAware+Spybot, (for a REALLY bad infestation) CWShredder+HijackThis, and a firewall (XP SP2's firewall if it's XP, and either ZoneAlarm or Sygate for other systems).
I predict that the day that this is released, someone will do that.
Heck, I see "diff '/mnt/windows/Program Files/Rockstar Games/GTA San Andreas/' '/mnt/windows/Program Files/Sanitized crappy GTA/'" occurring, as well (disclaimer: I don't know the real pathnames).
Basically, mismanagement of the project, folding-community mods silencing users that have complaints, the fact that it takes the most powerful folder in the world going on strike to get any complaints responded to...
I don't want that code running on my PC.
I still provide help for those who fold for Team 2630 (The Tech Report), but only to help TR's battle to overtake Ars and then get Rage3D, and lose the "doodyhead" title R3D's been hanging over their heads ever since R3D overtook Ars, not to help the Pande Group.
I've started talk of starting a TR Find-a-Drug team, but nobody bit. So, I'm FADing for no team... (at least I can bring all of my points over when/if I switch to a team)
To save transistors, I guess, K8 is 64-bit word size, 48-bit address (FWIW, it doesn't HAVE a traditional data bus. 128-bit RAM bus, and a 16-bit HT bus (IIRC))
Of course, this isn't the first time that's been done... I'm thinking of the 68000. 32-bit word, 16-bit data, 24-bit address...
The 68008 was even worse - 32-bit word, 8-bit data, (IIRC) 20-bit address.
That just means that there's no memory at the address space above 1GB. The address space above 1GB all the way to 1TB (on a 40-bit CPU - it's 256TB on a 48-bit CPU) most definitely still exists[1], but there's nothing there[2].
[1] Actually, in 32-bit mode, the address space is reduced to a 32-bit address space, limiting it to 4GB. [2] The OS uses that area for virtual memory, in fact. So, there actually IS something there. However, there's no physical memory there.
Hmm... could be related to the actual karma number, as well. I know I'm damn near 50, if not at 50, because I'm almost always modded up, and rarely modded down...
Sysadmins use LARTs, FWIW.
Programmers? I guess a code obfuscator?
Luckily, I have a stash of Dell QuietKeys behind me, so I can swap out keyboards for critical password entry.
Trivia bit: This article refers to differences in key sound with different keys as one way to "read" the keyboard.
A Model M is one of the worst when it comes to sound being different on different keys.
Not going to stop me from using one, though...
You can get a T1?
Set up your own ISP, and resell what you don't use.
When it's a CDMA carrier (like Sprint - my carrier).

Ah, but I COULD see Windows Server 2003 being run on an Opteron box, and Sun makes those...
Offline NT Password & Registry Editor?
Runs under Linux - heck, they've got a Linux live-floppy with it on there...
Similar example:

I guess I'll dredge up my posts from the Tech Report forums...

Same here... KB823353 is the only thing showing up in my AutoUpdates, and I've probably installed it 5 times...
It seems that it's a well documented problem, as well...
(KB897715 appears to be the update that causes the problem, as it has to be installed AFTER 823353...)

Actually, I should say...
AMD64 is 64-bit.
To save transistors, I guess, K8 is 64-bit word size, 48-bit address (FWIW, it doesn't HAVE a traditional data bus. 128-bit RAM bus, and a 16-bit HT bus (IIRC))

The 68008 was even worse - 32-bit word, 8-bit data, (IIRC) 20-bit address.
Wait a sec... ah, crap, that means XP64 uses 37-bit addressing...
So, that screws up everything...
Hmm... looking, it almost looks like I was wrong, and EM64T is 40-bit, and AMD64 is 48-bit...
Hmm? I've NEVER had ANY problem with the nvidia driver with a TNT2.
That DEFINITELY qualifies as an old card.
And, yes, I used nvidia, not nv. nv doesn't have 3D acceleration, even on those old cards, and the system this was in only had a 233MHz Pentium MMX.
That just means that there's no memory at the address space above 1GB. The address space above 1GB all the way to 1TB (on a 40-bit CPU - it's 256TB on a 48-bit CPU) most definitely still exists[1], but there's nothing there[2].

Why? I don't CARE about karma... I just post.
Nitpick: you can post something every two minutes (not 30 seconds) IF your karma is Excellent.
Lower karma (or not being logged in) means longer times, especially on later posts.
Well, M-Systems (who makes the Disk-on-Chip, and some UFDs) has a 128GB 2.5" (read: laptop sized) SATA drive...
They also go as high as 176GB for 3.5" SCSI.
So, no 256GB, but close.
