I am all for "murdering" murderers. If you take someone's life without cause, you must pay for what you took. The only thing as valuable as that persons life is your own.
I am all for allowing criminals to return to society. They must simply repay their debt. If the murderer can bring back the person they killed, I do not see why they should even serve jail time.
Something in your statement bothers me. Either the continuing fact of his salary or the fact that you are right. If I want to make his money, I have to learn from him. Ethics are costing me major coin.
It may be easy for you to say quit and depending on where you live there may be a plethora of jobs available. However, where I live is rather rural and there are only so many tech jobs. After following the same line of thought that you expressed, I had a company disolve out from under me 3 months later and spent the next 9 months unemployed.
I agree with your sentiment in that I do not want to be given a raise if, and only if, everyone gets one, but going home to my wife to tell her that "Oh, by the way sweetie, we are going to be tightening the old belt because the company sucks and I told them to stick it," is not my idea of fun.
I am not sure that a union is necessarily the right choice, but clearly there must be some middle ground between the techs and the guys in the suits making all the money. My manager makes 3x what I do and he has the spine and decision making skills of a jellyfish. Like many managers, the only quick decisions he makes are those that make him look good. Good for the techs or good for the company comes 3rd or 4th on his list.
If a union can toss my boss in the trash, where can I pay my dues?
This is a good 50% of the reason I have yet to get into MMORPGs.
People of Earth! Harken to me!
These are servers run by corporations that want to get every last penny out of each server and as long as they can massage the numbers and make it look like solid performance on paper, they will squeeze as many players as possible onto any one server. They are not *REALLY* concerned with smooth frame rates, but keeping the new guy happy long enough to get him addicted and then gradually lowering his expectations while maintaining his addiction and his account.
Unless the players revolt, get comfy with your current performance.

These are the same people who continued to work on a fledgling OS in the early 90's because they believed in it, despite the Microsoft behemoth.

Yes, you are responsible to check on a store's security policy to the best of your ability. Obviously they are not going to give you their router config to look through for mistakes or give you a glimpse at their overall security infrastructure, but you do hold final responsibility. Watch your credit card statements.
I admit that this is a large responsibility and not simple to do. I do not pretend that I do this myself. The fact is that my lack of effort does not excuse the store from its due diligence to protect my data. They hold the blame for the theft. I still hold the responsibility to make sure I know when my information has been misused.
When a big bank swallows your little bank, it is your job to know their practices, WITHIN REASON. If you do not do your job, and read the relevant data then you can not complain at the misuse of your information. Of course, there is a measure of responsibility held by both banks to notify you of the merger and any potential changes to the personal data policy within a reasonable amount of time so that, if you disagree with that policy, you can remove your funds and find a new bank.
Our lax societal efforts to ensure our own security do enable cheaper and faster methods of doing all kinds of things, but we are the ones demanding these faster services.
If you are in a car on a rainy night and the driver tells you he can go faster, but he may lose control; he can go slower, but it will take longer to get to your destination; or he can stay the same speed and take a mix of risk and time, your choice comes with a certain amount of responsibility for the outcome. The driver holds the responsibility to be able to handle the car at a reasonable amount of speed without endangering the passengers. If you demand he speed and he crashes, you share the blame. If you demand he slow down and you are late, you share the blame.
Simply because it is inconvenient or difficult to perform your responsibility does not mean you are excused from it.
Perhaps the real need is to demand that the companies make the crucial information we need to make a decision more available and more understandable.
Then again, it is our responsibility to demand it.
One of the major problems in all areas of our society stem from the relinquishing of or refusal to accept personal responsibility.
I am not responsible because I am ______ (fill in the blank).
Look at the laws you spoke of in your statement. They are ripped full of loopholes and reasons why no one is responsible or why the responsibility is placed on some unpunishable entity.
Mental Illness may have contributed to the fact that he killed him, BUT HE STILL KILLED HIM.

Belief in (Gg)od does not require adherence to any particular religion.
Belief in the bible does.
A religion is a set of rules and practices defining a group of people and their collective beliefs.
Belief is personal and should be individual.
Most zealots and fundamentalists can not separate their faith from their religion. If the pope starts molesting children, that does not mean their is no christian god. It does not mean all catholics are wrong or pedophiles. It means the pope is a sick bastard.
Accepting evolution along with creationism, if you choose to do so, is simply marrying man's increasing knowledge of his universe with his faith in god.
Everyone has done this to some degree. Unless of course you still run and hide everytime a comet crosses the sky.

as many copies of those cds as possible and sell them for a dollar each. Turn 115,000 cds into thousands and maybe even millions of real US $$$ for the school district. Then put up a monument to RIAA for assisting in the birth of WA-School E. Wabbit Music Store.
I am not offended by profane lyrics, but why give hundreds of copies of cds rather than a financial donation they could actually put toward... um, MUSIC!!!!
I know, my apologies for using logic and expecting some reasonability and rationality from an organization worried about from where Big Pun's next meal is coming, and whether Justin Timberlake 's entourage is properly pimpin'.

This is how to get linux onto the desktop and into the home. This girl will probably use linux for the rest of her life. This is great for the entire community. I dont know if one exists, but perhaps a website to turn kids to linux would be a great help the future of the OS. It is not as sexy or carry the bragging rights that kernel development does, but developing more software that a kid can use (not necessarily that young) opens the door to the next generation.
KDE while not my WM of choice (dont be shocked by the tone of my voice...), has a number of fun toys for kids, and Debian Jr. will help yours truly bring along my lil' jedi with linux from an early age.
The sad reality is that you are correct. I have seen postings from a/.'er who quotes Plato and how laws are only followed by those who would not have violated them anyway. The issue here is that the acknowledgements should not dominate the product, but it makes sense to put the requirement in the licensing.
While it could be taken to extremes, the acknowledgement could be simple and even relatively attractive. For instance, "Intel Inside" simultaneously advertises for Intel and tells the buyer that this box would not be what it is with out the work of the people at Intel. It does not include the names of every individual to ever touch a wafer at Intel.
The requirement must be in the license to provide a method for the original developer to at least get credit. However, the method of demonstrating that credit must be reasonable. I don't have to credit ENIAC everytime I turn on my PC. I just am delivered messages from the last couple of generations along the development timeline.
my apologies for this and all future gramatical errors?
I have had myself summarily flogged!

Being right does not make you a troll. However, being offtopic might.
Isn't this simply a case of giving credit where credit is due. If you build a project that includes the blood, sweat, and tears of other people, shouldn't they be credited. Either in the documentation or through some other method.
For the Open Source community to succeed we can not forget the hard work put in by those who came before us.
Is not one of the chief flaws in Windows the tight integration of the browser with the OS?
What sucks is that was a great password for me until you posted it online for the world to see.

It is greatly disputed whether or not the atanasoff was actually the basis for ENIAC.
The atanasoff must be widely accepted as the predecessor before complaining that it is being slighted.
