  3. Software updates on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

Ironically, software updates are what's keeping me on Windows. I hate having to reinstall or update my OS every six months (Ubuntu) just to keep using the latest software. On my Windows 2003 desktop (it's the only Windows license I have other than Windows 2000), I can run the latest hardware and software (LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin) without having to recompile anything (which I hate), which I can't do on an 8 year old Linux distribution. I can't even use a 2 year old Ubuntu livecd with my new motherboard!

My home server still runs Slackware 10.2, which is 5 years old. The security patches are there, but I'm stuck with an old versions of php and such. Time to upgrade this one.

As for MacOS X, I used my old Mac G4 (with 10.4) full time for a couple of weeks, and all I could say was "meh". It's nice and all, but I find it limiting when you want to do something specific. Often, it can be done, but it feels like the OS is going out of it's way to make it difficult to do.

  6. The smell and the time on Why Intel Wants To Network Your Clothes Dryer · · Score: 1

Have you ever forgotten some damp or humid clothes in the washer (after washing them) or in the dryer (before drying them)? After a while, they start to smell and need to be washed again. If the dryer starts when electricity is at it's cheapest, it may happen.

Sometimes, my girlfriend will do several laundry loads one after the other. If she had to wait for the dryer to start, it would take forever to do the laundry!

I am for government regulations (I am not American), energy savings and such, but I'll decide when I dry my clothes!

The issue here is about dust and scratches, not. I have listened at my father in law's house to some original 70's vinyl records on his Thorens turntable and the sound is amazing. The thing is that he cleaned is records (and needle) with some cleaner and carefully stores them. Vinyl records have clicks and pops because of dust and scratches. If you clean your vinyl records (and turntable needle) and store them carefully, they will sound very, very good.

  12. Easy: optical media on Harvard Prof Says Computers Need to Forget · · Score: 1

    Disclaimer: I haven't read TFA.

Bad quality optical media can help computers to forget. They don't choose what they forget, but they do as time passes by. I've read so many article about optical media, I'm surprised no one thought about it.

  13. Short circuit on My Maxtor Hard Drive Just Caught Fire! · · Score: 5, Informative

I read TFA, and from what I understand, is drive died normally (or a cable came unplugged), like lots of drives do, and when he plugged it in "while it was out of the case" as he says, the contacts on the logic board must have short circuited on the metal surface of the case, which created some sparks. It happened to a friend (who happens to be a computer tech) once when he was checking a faulty drive.

So in essence, he was not careful with his drive. Hardly a Slashdot story, even less news.

  14. Re:Stone Age on Slackware 11.0 Almost Done · · Score: 1

There is no Gnome in Slackware because it was removed a short while ago. It was too hard to maintain. The reason why it is still X.org 6.9 is probably for stability, like the 2.4 kernel and lots of other stuff. Even if it is for desktop use, some want stability. Stability is not just for servers, it is for workstations also.

You can (almost) with any KVM. You just need another computer. One is set up with Windows and the other with Linux (and Samba to share files). Boot both and switch between them using CTRL-CTRL-1 or CTRL-CTRL-2. It's what I do, so I can switch Windows, Linux and/or Mac, depending what is under my desk.

  19. 486DX with 16 MB of RAM on Microsoft Challenges Linux's Legacy Claims · · Score: 1
I know for a fact that Slackware 10.1 will install and run on a 486 with 16 MB of RAM and an HD over 100 MB. Yes, I did try it. No gui, just a file/web server. If you want a gui, I'm sure with a bigger disk (250 to 400 MB), you will run XFCE without too much problems. With some tinkering (or a 2.2 kernel Slackware version), Slackware will install and run with 8 MB of RAM. Windows 95 (first edition) works OK on that same machine.

As for KDE, I recently used a P166MMX with 64MB of RAM and KDE3 to play mp3s (this was Slackware 10.1). It worked without any problems. Windows 2000 works great on that same machine, I don't know about Windows XP though.

  21. Aluminium oxyde on Transparent Aluminum a Reality · · Score: 1

Like many others posters have pointed it out, there has been several other stories on slashdot similar to this one. Like the others, it says "transparent aluminium" and like the others, it's not pure aluminium nor an aluminium alloy, it is an aluminium oxyde, which has a different molecular structure, so it is not aluminium anymore. So, in essence, it may be news to materials engineer or chemists, but not news for Start Trek lovers.

JAlbum was the first I tried, but it was not practical for adding pictures to albums and comments to pictures, so I switched to Gallery. It works for me since I have my own server on a DSL line. Mambo is already slow on it (P166MMX), so I suspect Gallery 2 will be the same since it also uses MySQL.
