I try to do the same thing, as I'm getting very tired of everything closing down. Who wants to live in a town with no stores ( other than a few restaurants and liquor stores)?
The only reservaton I have is the idea that one gigantic business is somehow going to treat me better than another gigantic business. Giant Douche versus Shit Sandwich comes to mind...
Oddly enough, the police chief of detroit has recently been speaking about allowing citizens to defend themselves. He's heavily anti-vigilante, and careful to say that he does think his department is doing as good a job as they can, but he's reasonable about the idea of Detroit citizens protecting themselves in the city.
This I don't get. I know so many smaller women who are physically at a disadvantage in bad situations, who loudly deride guns. As if a large man who intended to rob/assault them would even need one to do that.
I'm buying more guns recently, not because I'm afraid of the "da gubmint" or worried someone will burn down my house, but because I enjoy shooting, and each gun shoots differently. Sometimes there isn't a serious reason for things.
There are a LOT of gun collectors who drive that statistic up. I have an uncle who owns approximately 50 guns of various types, all locked up nicely in hidden safes, and probably each only fired once every few years. Why? Because he collects them instead of stamps, or coins, or cars. Most are antique/older than seventy years old.
Selfishness is a negative, by definition. Self-interest, however...that's a whole different kettle of fish. Self-Interest is a universal law, like gravity. As long as you understand it, you can moderate/use it.
The answer, and what will kill everyone, is you can't. Automation has removed more jobs than off-shoring, and will continue to do so. Only so many people can be artists or creatives, and even much of that will be automated. This will increasingly become a larger problem in the future, what to do with those not skilled in particular fields to find work, but still smart and willing to work hard.
Except he's right. In my parent's hometown, a grocery store and a department store went out of business. buildings sat empty for years until....Walmart stepped into both of them. People bitched, but who else was willing to move in, they'd sat empty for so long and nobody else saw money there. This is in California.
I'm curious about minimum wage effects on other higher paying jobs. A good example of this would be the In-N-out hamburger chain in Southern California. They pay their employees significantly above minimum wage, and as a result their staff is far superior. They know they're making more and work for it. Now, if you raise the low end of minimum wage, and suddenly McDonalds workers are making the same as the In-N-Out workers, In-N-Out will need to drastically raise their pay rates as well, or risk losing staff to easier jobs with the same pay rate.
Also, say you currently make 2.5 times minimum wage. They raise it and now you only make 1.2 times that. Still feel as good about yourself and your job, when your boss says "No way I can afford to raise my salaries any further, I'm already getting screwed on the low end?" Will your productivity falter. I would imagine it would.
I once had a class where there was assigned auditorium seating. Woman sitting next to me, I made some comment about the coursework. I had absolutely no intention of hitting on her, I just wanted someone to talk to ( the other side was an aisle) and possibly borrow notes from. She gave me that crappy "oh, how dare you speak to me, you're just trying to hit on me" look, made an exasperated sound, and I never spoke to her again. That shit goes both ways.
I agree. I wish they would have a choice when first signing in: Tablet or desktop?, one that was reversible later. that way, you could choose the method of operation.
"Cut unemployment", meaning put an end to the increasing length of time unemployment benefits have been extended. One might also ask "Which party wants a permanent underclass of people dependent on unemployment aid"?

um...the point he was making was that we paid $3/year for nuclear waste disposal, and WHAT WAS PROMISED DID NOT HAPPEN. So, please, send me $4/year for fairy protection. Why not? after all, it's only $4. What does it hurt?
I hate that nonsense. You see it continually in California,every year, like clockwork: "Vote for this , it will save the schools!". Then, once it passes, next year: "Oh, we forgot, we also need the following". Continue this pattern every year.
My local elementary school recently used it's massive intellect to put solar panels on all the outdoor play areas. Yes. now there's only asphalt and solar panels. To make things worse, they don't even own the panels, they let some company install them on the fields, then pay for the power.
In the end, theft is theft. If you steal $1 from me, you're a thief. If you steal $10000 from me, your'e a thief.
That someone posts a picture of the shape of your butt shouldn't matter any more than someone posting a sound sample of your voice or a molding of your elbow.
What a boring world that would be: "Honey, check out my new swimsuit, which is as exciting as the molding of your elbow".
