"Get legal by avoiding the P2P clients"

What on earth makes you think that avoiding P2P clients stops you from being vulnerable to trojan wma/wmv files?

TVstationxyorzy.com gets hacked. Their promo wmv file(s) is(are) replaced by wmvs with a trojan payload. Suddenly, downloading what you thought was a safe file, isn't. And your pc is now on the zombie network.

So now, wmv/wma files are on my 'Must Avoid' list, along with DRM'd MP3 files (the only mp3 files my Sony player won't play are the ones I purchased from a legal-download provider), and anything Real. So are Windows updates. And the entertainment industry has bitten yet another hand that feeds it.

I always thought it stood for Your Rights Online, which is not misleading if you understand the average Slashdotter's point of view regarding the entertainment industries' point of view regarding the rights of the consumer: we have none.

We have no rights to record. We have no rights to share. We have no rights to skip anything during the broadcast that we would rather not watch. In other words, we have no rights to all the fun stuff.

Of course, we do have rights: the right to watch the broadcast, and the right to not watch the broadcast.

"If your default position is I'm a thief, then why are you surprised when I thieve?"

Right now, I purchase dvds because the sound and video quality are better than anything I can do with my tv card and a burner. And it's often easier to purchase the dvd than try to burn a homemade jobbie.

But DRM the dvd, making it a damned pain in the backside to get to the point where I can watch the film, and I won't be willing to purchase your next project when it comes to dvd. I'll either burn a copy when the film airs on PBS or TNT, or not watch it.

Look at it this way; every time you DRM a dvd or cd, you are building a maze the consumer needs to find their way through before they get to consume your product. DRM the tv broadcast, and you may convince me to turn the boob tube and dvd player off permanently.

What I find highly ironic is that in order to combat piracy, you are making the pirate versions the only easily-playable versions.

It was in the newspaper a few months ago. There had been an accident on the local highway involving several cars - you know the scene, one guy driving too close to another, the guy in front brakes, and suddenly 5 cars crash into each other. And suddenly another guy crashes into the cars and there's a second pileup.

A number of witnesses swore blind to the cops that the guy had made no attempt to slow down and was speeding. Cops asked for, and were given, permission to access the black box data, which confirmed the guy did try to brake and that he wasn't speeding. So his black box prevented his being charged and possibly arrested.

Ironically, the cops required the car owner's permission to access the black box data; the insurance company does not require permission to access the black box data.
