  1. Re:Opening the Gates on 30th Anniversary of Gates' Letter to HCC · · Score: 1
Progress for progress' sake is science and engineering.

Without incentive, where's the "capitalism"? It's just sustaining science and engineering JOBS (=communism). Perhaps theoretical technology will advance, but I don't see why it is entitled to do so on tax money.

If there is no incentive to make money in a certain field, progress will suffer in a society such as a capitalist one.

Progress for progress' sake is communism. Is there no static environment in which you would be happy to live and let live?

  3. In all honesty.... on Brain Scans to Identify Liars? · · Score: 1
It has always been human to lie and get away with it, in part for personal health and safety.

Lying is central to sexual selection, measuring fidelity, and to judging one's honesty in contrast. It is a "necessary evil", one that kids must practice (and succeed at) in order to truly mature.

This is bad for everyone- very bad, and not just for chronic liars (who usually give themselves away anyway).

"Wow, Dean Kamen is a PR genius."

No, just a circus clown -- a wannabe 'Steve Jobs', but not the real thing.

His marketing approach was pretentious to the point of insulting. He only talked about his own personal excitement, unproven genius, and pillow-chats with his wife that made one question if the man is even married. Or still a virgin.

We are not redesigning cities, changing our driving habits, or spending thousands of dollars on a glorified electric wheel-chair. It doesn't take a Dean Kamen to see that.

They really deserve credit. We have been so stuck on the legal issues of file-sharing, that the moral debate has amounted to very trite arguments. From, "It's stealing, period..." to "Good, they deserve it!"

Very few people automatically think that LAW = GOOD MORALS, even if obeying it is a virtue in itself or a "necessary evil".

I think the Swedes are willing to ask very simply, "Is this right?"
