    I considered updating my (retired) father's computer to a nice fast machine with a cable modem... then I considered how much more trouble he would get into with a good connection.

    It's hard enough to explain phishing and spyware to him - it's like he almost thinks that I'm making it up just to ruin his fun or something.

    "Next time you go 5 MPH over the speed limit, I expect you to duly walk into the nearest police station and demand they write you a citation."

    Point taken, however in MA the law says we must drive at speeds which are "safe and proper"; technically, the speed limit is just a guide. One could theoretically drive over the limit legally, or under the limit and still get a ticket (which would be dismissed by an angry judge, no doubt...).

    This is great for me, 6000 OGR units were completed. But Eliza's not happy because the RC5 work is falling behind. What happens if she works on each project for an hour while I work on OGR for .2 hours and RC5 in the remaining time? 3300 OGR units and 3300 RC5 units get completed. That's 300 more units for each project than if we each worked on our favorites by ourselves.
    As a dumbass, I demand that your income be docked by the government and transferred to me... someone who can't keep up with what the hell you are talking about.

    The government will eventually realize that computer technology is bigger than any federal agency.

    Hence, they will likely create a new one, the Department of Computing (not part of the FCC) in order to grow themselves, tax society, and control private citizens. Just like they do for everything else.

    Of course it will be sold as "building bridges" or "advancing technology", etc... Something for our childrens' future, no doubt.

    The fear you have is an advantage- when people see Mac vs Windows, not just side-by-side but overlapping, they will be forced to make comparisons and choose a favorite. (My money's on the "X".)

    Many are owned by individual graduate students (and full PhDs) who "wasted" their weekends, social and family lives while certain people (not you...) were at parties, playing video games, or surfing the internet.

    No, as long as you can't afford it, someone who works more than you do will pay for it through Medicaid (taxes) and higher premiums for health insurance.
