    Demand for their pills and services goes down when they are competing with inner personal strength.

    They have to make people crazy somehow. Exploiting their grief is one way.

    50 years ago or so it would lead to starvation and human beings dieing in large parts of Asia out but it has'nt happened in the recent past since people started using pesticides.

    Did you know that panda bears need access to two species of bamboo for exactly that reason? The cycle of one species alone would leave them starving otherwise.

    These editors think they are smart because they can program, yet a little thing like this requires PhD climatology research to explain to them. (And some sort of political action no doubt.)

    It's not enough to sort by blond, black, gay, scat, etc. Some categories are a combination that don't belong in a hierarchy.

    That is where tagging comes in. Sorting can be done on-the-fly, with no one category intrinsically more important.

    If your company is run by cheap bastards who have their hourly employee time-clock billing system tied into a booted PC ONLY, I say sue the crap out of them!

    It makes a big difference whether you live in a state with strict employment laws and a political system to enforce them. Some places you'll lose more money paying a lawyer. In others places, the company will really be screwed for their evil games, and you'll be made fairly wealthy.

    The important thing is to report them. Otherwise nothing changes.

    In industry, a huge percent of computers are hooked up to machines. Turning them on and waiting for them to initialize is basically part of "booting" the system before you begin. Conceivably, that can take minutes or even hours to perform.

    Also waiting for network connections takes time.

    If that isn't work, then they'd better provide hammocks for the time you are waiting. (Or better, they should just obey the law and pay their employees.)

    The example they give is ridiculous... The swindle has NOTHING to do with it. They could have just as easily been honest and carried on the act, giving the guy his share of the money afterward.

    The point was to win someone's trust. Betraying him afterward is an afterthought, and completely irrelevant.

    but if you want to interpret this as hostility then there's a good chance you might be part of the problem.

    Epiphany: the reason women avoid male geeks is because they WON'T get much sexual attention. They see us as fags.

    The few who "brave" us (because we're so horrible, don't forget) probably enjoy pretending to reject men constantly, when in reality nobody is physically interested in her.

    Overall, however, scientific processes (MRI, etc) are so rough that it will be quite some time before we're able to actually "explore" and "find" the center of whatever creativity really is, and identify how it differs from other, more pedestrian thought processes.

    I find the entire subject rather dehumanizing. We are constantly being further reduced to mere chemicals. Due to certain institutions and a desperate society, drugs now replace life experience and the freedom to choose anything for ourselves. The Borg is a vision of future human beings.

    Some people actually want that. Nerds and government both strive for it.

    MIT is the sort of unpleasant experience that should be reserved for those who genuinely want it.

    Absolutely, and so many people lose perspective on that. My philosophy is to aim for the top, minus one or two "points". In other words people who push themselves to the max seem to end up miserable.

    Don't sell yourself short, by any means... Aim high high HIGH -- but be realistic.

    Whatever that means!

    One is a bigot when it's politically convenient to say so. The same person is a messiah when other values dominate.

    Whatever makes you feel good... people have no hesitance rationalizing any motive or outcome, nor twisting definitions to their need.

    Occasionally I still use drag-n-drop to backup whole hard drives. 'Time Machine' made this less common, but it's still an overnight task when I copy to new drives.

    I'd be interested in knowing what percentage of these drives are going in external enclosures. ... I'd guess the majority of these drives are going to be storing movies, mp3s and photos, where the speed hardly matters at all.

    I will not consider another purchase until USB 3 or Firewire3200 is available.
