the marketing droids should show us some stats indicating the percentage of the engineering market that the G5 Macs have.

iMac customers don't care about engineering usage stats. People visiting that page don't want to know what percentage of any market the chip's family has. Why would they reference the Power Macs on the iMac page?

I've been using allofmp3.com for a while now, Pixies page here, and when a band comes through town, I'll always buy a shirt and usually the CD as well, just to make sure they get my support.

  5. So it's actually getting better.. on A Six-Step Plan for Apple · · Score: 1

A few things from the discussion that hit home..

A French AC had this to say: "For those who don't know someone owning a mac: What a boring life you must have! I know a lot of very different people using different OS. At least Mac, Win and Linux.

Maybe you should go out more?"

Copied from Daring Fireball, one of very few writers that actually does his research and produces quality..

"The reason this argument is so popular with Windows apologists is that it's a convenient bit of rhetoric. They say it's so, we say it's not. You can't get past this argument, because it can't be disproven without the Mac OS actually attaining a Windows-like market share.

So, let's concede the point, just for the sake of argument: OK, fine, if the Mac had the same market share as Windows, the tables would be turned and there'd be just as many Mac security exploits as there are Windows exploits today.

Now what? Given that the Mac is never going to attain a monopoly share of the operating systems market -- that merely expanding its share to, say, 10 percent would be universally hailed as an almost-too-good-to-be-true success -- isn't it thus only logical to conclude that the Mac is forever "doomed" to be significantly more secure than Windows?"

Somewhere else, buried alive: They just need to get better at convincing Average Joes WHY they should pay a premium for a Mac.

The problem people fail to see is that Apple is in the Luxury Computer market, and always has been (except for it's long-gone education relationship). Up until the end of the millenium, computers WERE a luxury. BMW, Mercedes, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dom Perignon, Rolex, Cartier...the list goes on, none of these care that you want it but can't afford it and wish it were cheaper. You just do what all the other ghetto folk do: buy the knockoff. In this case it's Windows.

  9. Re:It's a simple license issue. on Night Goggles Capture Spider-Man Movie Bootlegger · · Score: 1

How's that read GPL again? I agree that I can do whatever I want with GPL code, but if I want to distribute it I have to share my changes. If I break it there'd be Slashdotters calling for my nads on a stick. The agreement with the movie theaters is "I agree that I can come in and sit quietly and watch the movie. No, I can't record it. No, I can't sit in the back and sing the Spider Man cartoon theme at the top of my lungs. No, I can't piss on the people in the next row." Simply put, you're not allowed to disrupt their business. Yes, recording and distributing it before it leaves theaters disrupts their business, don't kid yourself. If you don't like it, DON'T GO TO THE THEATER. How difficult is this concept?

Pretty much agree with this, I've stopped seeing movies on principle, I know it won't have any effect on their business (since I don't expect the rest of the mainstream to believe what I believe.. fscking sheep), but I'm really not interested in film as art or entertainment. There's better things to do.
At the same time, does it not scare you (those that need to get these movies early on p2p) that you're fighting the mob? Or is that not yet clear?

heh.. no, he should get QuickTime, believe it or not. I was really amazed when these .avi files played with audio in qt player. It's good to make sure you have all the 3rd-party codecs, go to the qt prefs in the system prefs and choose update, then custom. get them all, they come in handy and are extremely small in terms of hd space. (don't know if it's the same in windows)

head to this page to grab it. it's free, and since it sounds like you're on Windows, you may as well get iTunes while you're there. iTunes

If it's possible to use quicktime player for a movie file, you usually should, even if it's with a cracked pro key. VLC is great for AVIs that are encoded badly or with some obscure codec (or just a crappy one like divx or wmv that won't play in qt player, 3ivx is better, or xvid).

VLC has saved some of my experiments with my own DVD backups. It's a handy tool, and deserving of praise. It's just worth noting that the built-in tools should be used whenever possible.
