MS was close to this with Win95 which had both Wordpad and the Exchange client (now known as Outlook). Wordpad is still around in WinXP and probably will be in Vista too. One wonders why they didn't have an ExcelPad or PointPad (powerpoint) included with the OS as a marketing tool to push users into the Office suite.

  5. Why photographs? on Giant Squid Caught on Film · · Score: 1

They knew what they were looking for and video captured at even one frame per second provides more valuable information than still photographs. It seems a trigger system of some sort could have been used to tell it to start filming if the bait actively thrashes about (i.e. attacked by something, maybe a squid, maybe not). Maybe a bit off topic, but why isn't the same done with space craft especially with the storage space of hard drives and memory as a buffer. Sure it might take awhile to download the data to a computer but video is so much better.

  13. Every movie going to include a player & a TV? on RFID Tags for Digital Rights Management · · Score: 2, Interesting

I recall awhile ago some radio stations were given demo CD's inside a portable CD player that was glued shut and the headphones were glued into the jack (or something like that). The fact that any device whether it be a RFID DVD player or whatever has to output to a display device of some sort. This is great if the consumer has a newer VCR or TV that's aware of the broadcast flag or whatever the latest fad is, however all it takes is one person with a first-generation VCR to record the movie and then capture into an MPEG in their computer. It's going to be a never-ending battle.

The article states there are some two million drivers but they're only going to install this into some thousand vehicles, so how do they determine who gets it and who doesn't? My guess is first or second time offenders would get them first similar to how criminals are released back into society but have to "check in" with local law enforcement every now and then or when they move they have to "register" with the local sheriff. I imagine there will be random checks to make sure the devices stay installed in the vehicle as well.

Why in the world would you think your (cell) phone would work in your house Because I want my cell phone to replace my land line which means additional business for the cell companies (which I'm sure they're interested in). I'm currently using a CellSocket which has an antenna extension and the calls come through loud and clear with AT&T/Cingular. Even better than using the built-in extension antenna that the phone came with.

I'd like to see someone make an interface between digital cameras and internet-capable cell phones so that one could simply transfer the image to the phone which in turn uploads it to a web server or sends the images as attachments via email. The only problem with this is some cell phone companies charge per megabyte and thus it could get expensive.
