  1. Re:I do on Networked Refrigerated Microwave · · Score: 1

I earned the title of "uber geek" at my office when I used the Mr House [misterhouse.net] web server running in my house to turn off the X10 controlled coffee maker I'd forgotten to turn off. The system turns on my porch light an hour or so before I get off work, and remembers to turn it off at 3am. I also have it turn on my livingroom lights so I never walk into a dark house.

With the number of devices the open source Mister House project can interface with (too many to list) - the "smart home" is only a few weekends worth of work away (and a couple hundred bucks). I'm working on a way that I can use the program to turn on my hoses for watering (no sprinkler system, and since I rent the lot, I can't put one in).

Home automation is a fun hobby for someone like me, but imagine the benifits home automation and internet appliances would have for someone who's physically challenged. This is the main reason I'm working a friend to produce better protocalls and make the control units affordable to the average joe on the street.

from the article, it really sounds like the RIAA needs to go after Microsoft, since in this case if you can't mark a directory/file as shared, his indexing service couldn't index it.

Heck, maybe they should go after them [microsoft] after all, because with out some sort of OS, you can't rip the music and mark it as shared in windoze and his service couldn't index it... even a step further, go after the artist, because if they didn't make the music in the first place, you couldn't rip it, nor mark it as shared in windoze, and his service couldn't index it! Thus goes the "logic" of the RIAA.

That energy would have to be provided by some other means, such as coal and natural gas, et. al, solar, wind, or nuclear.

A friend gave me the idea of floating solar platforms in the middle of the ocean to process the water into usable hydrogen. Simply let them sit out duing the sunlight hours and produce lots of cheap, clean fuel. If a storm comes along, simply drop the whole thing under water to the point that the storm doesn't effect it. The process could be almost completely automated and could be designed to have almost no impact on the sea critters.

I've yet to find a serious flaw with his plan.

  9. Re:Advantages? on Contractor Proposes Laser Rifles for US Military · · Score: 1

I can think of a ton of advantages a weapon like this would have.

    1. Produces excess heat - a much better way to heat your MRE than those stinky chemicial heaters they come with now.

    2. Since the power source is always on, put a 110 outlet on the thing for plugging in your electric razor, Xbox or dvd player to watch "FM"s on.

    3. It's ability to shoot through smoke/sand/trees/swarms of giant gnats will be reduced somewhat - but remember, so it a balistic weapon. Generally helps to be able to see it if you're gonig to shoot at it. Even thermal optics are not very effective in these situations, regardless of what hollywood says.

    4. In addition to warming MREs, toss it in your sack a few minutes before you rack out and your bag will be nice and warm for you. Put the platoon's weapons in the middle of your tent, and you can get rid of the damn pot belly stoves that are a pain to clean.

    5. Imagine not having to field strip the entire weapon every day! Just keep the outside clean and your optics clear and you're good to go.

    6. Effective range. Most crunchies (infantry types) engage targets at 300Yds or less, simply because that's what the effective range of the weapon is. Have any idea how hard it is to see, much less hit a target with the naked eye at 300yds? Advanced optics would help both situations, but with the greater accuracy and distance of the laser weapon, ground pounders will be able to engage targets at ranges generally reserved for mounted weapons (M240, M2, etc).

    7. If this can be done effectivly as a light figher weapon, imagine what a tank could do with them, I wonder if this sort of thing will be the early predisesor (sp?) of the Bolo's HellBore.

    8. Of course, looks like it's just a hoax, so this entire post has just been the ramblings of a "old" tanker.

HOWEVER... Did a fresh install on an older HP Kayak. Didn't see anything for installed hardware. Didn't see or even try to find the lan eth0 - Intel 10/100 Pro. This machine comes with a ISA sound card, and sndconfig doesn't even install. Yes, I probably should install these items seperatly, and I'm sure the RPMs are not too hard to come by, but with a brand new install and older hardware, I'd like to think that I wouldn't need to. Isn't RH trying to be the easy install king?

OTOH - Mandrake 9.1 comes right up, sees the network card, sndconfig kinda pukes on the ISA sound card (old Aztec that worked find in win98SE) - I haven't take a lot of time to play with the settings or look at the card to see if it's got jumpers... but it's much easier.

OTOHOH - Mandrake 9.1 will NOT install at all on my old Gateway laptop. Freezes on the main install screen. Where as RH breezes through, but won't even try to find the PCMCIA Network card (Cisco 350 Airnet). Ended up putting WinXP on it, less install time, no headaches - found and installed everything just fine once I put the cisco drivers on it.

So which is better? I hate to say it, but my experiences are leaning towards RH 7.3 and Windoze series stuff. Look like both have some more work to do - IMNVHO.
