Coincidentally, headline news at the moment over here in England is a sex offender whos been found beaten to death
Paedophile found dead in home
One I heard a while back was about a group of people from Swansea travelled roughly 150miles to London to harrass and vandalise the property of a paediatrician.....
Not sure why he didn't specify the exact software, legal reasons I guess. I'm not so circumspect, so here's the link aplaws I'm 99% sure that's the package.
I work for a UK local council (I am more circumspect about specifying which one tho:) ). The chances of getting any open source software in there are miniscule (although I'll try if I see the opportunity). We're 100% M$, can't even get on the network without having Office start-up enabled, severely limiting me from getting a linux box on the network and prototyping.
As for the aplaws project I had a quick look at that a while back, and I agree with the original poster. The things that initially occurred to me was that there seems no real direction for the project, no point of contact to find out more, no firm plan outlined for the future. Have a look at the message board on there.
Parts of the the higher levels of government and have the right ideas, but for it to filter down to the people that matter in the councils is going to be a long process.
The philosophy behind open source parallels that of government. Made by the people for the people. Giving the individual as much as possible for the lowest possible cost. We all know what M$'s philosophy is, which is why I believe governments should push towards using more open source.
Ah Aussies, great nation... unless they've yet again just beaten us at sport, in which case you're the most unbearable ppl on the planet;) Your politicians stink, and mine's a VB. I'm not offended, inet is a great form of communication but still lacks in conveying meaning. I've been informed by a NZ friend, than stinking kangaroo f**ker is nowhere nr accurate "rabid dingo f**k" is much more offensive and apt:P
Completely OT, but who cares, no-one will look at this as it drops down the front page, this reminds me of another Aussie and culture difference's inadvertent racism. Took an Aussie friend to a footy game over here their left back (black guy) cynically fouled one of our players, the ref did nothing, crowd boo's, Aussie next to me trying to get into the spirit of things yells "You stupid black maggot", I'm lost for words as are the people around me. Turns out he was abusing the ref not the player, he's used to Aussie Rules where the refs are in white and calling the ref "A White maggot" is anything but racist. Just goes to show even communicating in person and aurally can be as deficient as text on the web
If you ever make it over to London try and get to this place. Nowhere to match it in London. Just be careful with the P word if you do make it there;)
I can't speak for the adaware thats in with this, but I've installed some evil ad-ware before which took a little more than running adaware to remove it. It integrated itself with my browser, added itself as a DNS Suffix so that failed URLS would go to its search site. Still don't know where it came from to this day.
I know this a dupe, but it still raises some interesting points.
Like GIF and MP3 before it, it's a widely used proprietory technology. Where possible we should be making the effort to move over to a GPL'd alternative such as XVID or OGG
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that this change will take place in the future, and there will be no free/clean version. If this article has duped article writers and/. readers you can guarantee there will be countless numbers of laypeople (I'm so PC) who install the ad-ware version without realising there is a clean install available.
In my hiatus from technical employment (over now after 18 long months) amongst other things I've worked as a baggage handler.
The clients for the baggage reconciliation system (BRS - ensures bags travel if and only if the passenger gets on the plane, implemented after Lockerbie) run on Windows 3.1!!!
First thing I thought is, what happens if someone wiretaps the network cable? I'd guess it wasn't encrypted, or if it is, it's a 10 yr old technology, How long would it take to crack it, learn protocols and be able to wreak havoc?
Must by archaic/vulnerable systems like that in key installations everywhere. Scary to think.
There has been more than enough Creatine related FUD in the tabloid/gutter press over here (UK). Seems the BBC is adding to it as well. From my experience, and that of others I know, body odour has never been a factor.
I've taken this stuff before and it gave my training the boost I was looking for. Never noticed any side effects, apart from the obvious temporary weight gain. Was younger and a bit of a fitness freak then, wouldn't bother with it now tho.
The biggest mistake people make when taking it, is to stay on it for too long, leaving them with comparatively depleted energy levels when they eventually stop taking it.
IANADNW (Doctor, Nutritionist, Whatever) but IMHO pay as much attention to the increased brain power element of it as all the other ubiquitous Vitamins/Drinking Tea/Exercising/Yogic Chanting increase/decreases your Life Expectancy/Impotency/Hair Loss stories
Also of note, Mozilla's usage share has risen from 1.2% in February to 1.6% now, a 33% improvement!
Those stats are lacking/misleading.
In the same period Netscape has lost more users than Mozilla has gained.
It states IE6 adoption is increasing (my gran could've told you that) but fails to state the movement of MS's overall market share.

"most BIOS makers" might catch up sooner than you think.
Just bought one of these (for MAME cabinet project) and USB is suppported as a boot device, although I've not tried it yet.
Quite a lot of PC for £60(GBP) !
Ah well. Least we'll appreciate it if/when it all picks up again.

Thanks for hosting that.
I've just installed it, had a quick test and theres a definite improvement.
I can now alt-tab between C&C Generals and the desktop a hell of a lot faster, game also closes more efficiently.
Netscape browser and mail load noticably faster too.

No idea if you know this or not, but FYI "Paki" is taken to be a very offensive word by ethnic minorities over here (England)
I'm guessing you're American and using that work would mean as much as me using "Cnuk" or "Spic" over here.
Not everybody is on broadband and not all advertising is evil.
If I was on a slow connection, $2 a CD would seem an absolute bargain/life-saver.

First time I've seen that listed as a side effect

C++ just as bad :(
The longer this goes on the more courage I'm picking up to become a teacher, so not me .... but neither is flipping burgers.
Asks you to enter a state and salary in dollars Any chance of including UK ppl somehow ?
