Well, if they get 10 hours a week, that's still over $3000. A week! A yearly salary of around $150,000. And that leaves them 25 hours a week to either:
    • do other work, or
    • take things easy and have a high quality of life
Look, if they want a pay rise, fine by me; I have no arguments with people looking for a higher salary. But trying to argue that they and only they deserve an ongoing cut of any profits above and beyond anyone else involved in creating the game is ludicrous. And the mawkish attempt to tug on heart-strings by arguing they are on the same level as coal-miners and office cleaners is frankly just embarrassing and implies a level of self-absorption on their part that I, the son of an actual working-class man, can scarcely comprehend.

The problem with playing games on handhelds (I have experience of Palm and iPAQs) is that they simply aren't designed for it. Nothing is more frustating than trying to play a game with sticky keys. Also, the iPAQ couldn't register two seperate key presses at the same time (say, up-left and fire). I tried a few games, everything from NetHack to more recent proprietary games, and gave up.

With flatscreen tech making such fast advances, I've decided to postpone replacement of my CRT as long as possible. Basically, until it dies, or the image quality goes down badly.

I'm with you. I consider LCD screens to be totally overhyped; everyone seems to be hung up on the usability (in this case, the light weight/size of the monitors), but I find the image quality appalling. If you're a gamer, there's also the fact that at anything other than the native resolution, images look even worse, which means you can't change resolutions to increase FPS. I'm really hoping that something better than LCDs comes along soon - hopefully this is it.

Who modded this "interesting"? It's pure fiction. The Hagia Sophia in Constantinople was actually sacked by Christians in 1204, led by the then Doge of Venice: http://aggreen.net/church_history/1204_sack.html/
A mob rushed into Santa Sophia. With the Image of the Pantacrator looking down upon them from the great dome, they broke up the altar for its gold content, smashed the icons, threw the Holy Gifts to the floor, seized the church vessels for their Jewels, and tore mosaics and tapestries from the walls. Horses and mules were brought into the church the better to carry off the sacred vessels, gold, silver, and whatever else they could gather. Drunken soldiers drank from chalices and ate from patens while riding asses draped with priestly vestments. A mocking prostitute was placed on the Patriarch's chair to dance and sing obscene songs. This pattern of pilferage and desecration was repeated in churches, monasteries and palaces throughout the city. The tombs of the emperors were rifled, and all of the classical statues and monuments which had survived from ancient Greece and imperial Rome were destroyed. One writer wrote that never in history had so much beauty, so much superb craftsmanship been so wantonly destroyed in so short a space of time. What was not carried off was burned, smashed, melted down for its precious metal content, or stripped for its jewels.
In 2001, the then Pope apologised for the sack.

Constantinople was eventually conquered by the Ottomans well after the last crusade. Far from sacking it, then turned it into a mosque without much destruction (even the original mosaics - depicting human forms - were covered by plaster rather than destroyed).

Sorry, I don't understand your logic. The reason that Wolfenstein and Doom were inspirations was because there was nothing like them before. It was nothing to do with infrastructure - if there's one constant in gaming, it's constantly changing infrastructures. iD didn't sit back and develop Quake on top of Doom's game engine.

So if the argument for spending 7 years developing Freeciv is that there is now an OSS engine for developing other RTS games, it's still reinventing the wheel.

Since we're talking Civ here, you don't have to; it runs fine in DOSbox, and I'd be surprised if it didn't run under a similar emulator on Linux.

If it doesn't, I think spending time creating an open source emulator to run those old great games as they were meant to be is far preferable to simply copying one old game. It would certainly take less time than the 7 years it has taken for Freeciv so far.

Welcome to the reason why I've given up writing free software in my spare time.

Sorry, but if your hobby can't survive the least criticism, maybe you do seriously need to reevaluate it.

I tell you, my hat's off to those programmers who keep going in the midst of what all-too-often seems like a huge population of spoiled brats.

Oh, purlease. This is like me, a writer, saying "I tell you, my hat is off to those writers who keep going with their attempts to rewrite Moby Dick in l33t-speak." If you think what you are doing is great, at least have the courage of your convictions.

And I'll tell you, one of the reasons why you don't see more innovation in the free software world is because of idiots like yourself who would rather bitch about what is out there that they don't like, rather than put a little effort into finding a game they might like and helping them out, even if it's only testing builds.

Someone has already what-the-fucked this sentence, but I'll reiterate. What does criticising a clone of a 13-year old game have to do with stifling creativity? In my mind, it's the exact opposite. What next - should we start praising a Linux version of "Horace Goes Skiing" for the sake of it?

Want original games? Here's a starter's list: Wesnoth, Worldforge, XConq, Holotz's Castle, Glest, S.C.O.U.R.G.E., Cube, Gate 88, Globulation, Adonthell... oh, who am I kidding? If you weren't willing to look before, you're probably not going to now. That's not even including the really neat ones that are in development right now.

I'm sure there are neat open-source games out there. But we're talking about Freeciv here I thought.
