Oh look, and Anonymous poster flaming the host, great one sir, next time have the chutzpah to include your account name.

While as Americans, we like to discard statistics that don't agree with those sunny little post-cards we keep in our heads, there is no denying the stats shepd provided (look, links even) unless you can propose a reason why these stats are not kosher, you need to find some other tree to bark up.

Shepd: I would not say that longitude has much to do with the similarities between Texas and Michigan, and while it seems to be the case that wackos in both of these respective states seem to share a lot in common, declaring they are the same on such details isn't completly valid. The stats cannot be dismissed, but correlation does not prove causation. It could be argued that the base crime rate in Texas would be even higher if there was no "use of deadly force to defend property" law.

Still though, I can give an opinion and my opinion is that you are correct, deadly force does not lower crime rates, just as instating capital punishment does not reduce the instances of so called capital crimes. States that have fliped flopped between having the Death penalty and not having it showed no significant difference in crime before and after the law change.

hmmmm, I would definately say that System Shock 2 is one of the best games ever, and certainly the best horror game made to date. It was spooky as hell, and kept you in the dark just enough to make you aware that you were screwed, but you never knew exactly knew what by. The game that held the title of "scariest ass game" before I played SS2 was the original "Alone in the Dark", the grand daddy of "survival horror" games in their current form.

I would say that horror based games have the greatest potential to get you emotionaly envolved in a story line, at least they have for me. The first Resident Evil (the others never did much for me) Eternal Darkness and The Silent hill series are all great games to sit back with on a dark night with the lights down low.

The first game that actually scared me though was the game "Haunted House" on the Atari (someone else mentioned this game too) In retrosepct its sort of a crappy game, but when I was playing it for the first time at the tender age of 6, I was actually terrified of it. I actually stopped playing it it scared me so much.

I guess the question is what are you buying when you buy a cd? the Cd itself with whatever happens to be on it, or the right to listen to the material on the medium. Any legal people able to tell me which it is? Fair use seems to support the later.

As for ruining my childhood, adulthood has done that with extream success, in fact there seems to be little left to ruin. At least old video games are still as good as they were back in the day (god bless emulation)

Sadly, Unreal Tournament seems to have been the high watermark for this paticular franchise. I bought UT2003, and i liked it, but it was the same game, albeit with nicer graphics of course.

What's peeved me the most, is I remember playing Unreal 1 and UT for the first time, and being impressed with the array of weapons you had to play with. They were not the typical pistol-shotgun-machinegun-rocket cliches that most every other FPS had accepted as the gospel of arsenals. You had a goofy blade that could bounce off walls, a Snot-Gun, a 6 barrled rocket launcher and so on. You get UT2003 and there is nothing new (the ion-gun doesn't count since it's in only about a quarter of the maps)

The unreal 2 pops up and well the series seems then to be in trouble.

. Believe me, that scenario would have the RIAA shaking in their boots. There would be massive publicity, the RIAA would have been completely trashed before it was over and no one would have cared who won in the end I doubt it. The RIAA stance is an easy one to defend in the eyes of the general populace. Here in the Geek-culture we hate them, but no matter what your stance on the property rights of the recording industry vs the users is, you have to admit, it hardly seems that there is much of a legal leg to stand on when you try and convince a jury that file-swapping isn't stealing. The media, and the general public takes a more or less conservative stand on issues like theft. The RIAA would simply declare that the actions of these 4 is the reason that everyone else has to pay $18 a CD and the public would lap it up the same way they lap up $50 tax cuts and sweat over the $10 of their personal tax contribution that gets speant on welfare and public assistance. The settlement certainly makes it easier for the RIAA, but it also leaves the door open. They haven't lost their case yet, but they haven't won it either. Lets wait for a case that falls more in the gray before we expect a victory.
