    Apple (they've got the iPod, nice interface, and early lead), Microsoft (they've got the desktop monopoly), and Wal-Mart (they've got the low cost structure).

    These companies also sell other products than the music downloads, and are thus willing to only break even on selling the music, and make profit elsewhere!

    Yes, this is the first casuality of the new internet bubble. Next up I think will be Napster. It will probably be bought/merged with Microsoft's forthcoming online music endeavor.

    No, I think Napster are quite entrenched at the moment (profit or not). The next to go will probably be either EMusic, Rhapsody, or Musicmatch. Where are their University deals? And isn't Napster generally considered number two? (I could be wrong on that last point).

    Amusingly, Steve Job's is the guy who made the 1995 prediction that Apple was going to die! Of course, he wasn't back at the company then... and he's obviously corrected everything he thought was wrong with it back then! ;-)

I've never found a way to view video clips full screen in Quicktime, Real Player can't be trusted and all the decent OSS players are written for Linux. Media Player 9 is a very good player, although it damn well should be when you consider the millions of development dollars thrown at it.

    Full screen in quicktime is a feature of quicktime pro (10 Reasons to go pro shown here), which costs $29.99 (eek). But what about VLC?

    However, reading and understanding code that ISN'T yours can be damn near impossible sometimes, especially when you're a newbie.

    That's a bit harsh! Isn't this true of all programming languages?

    Think of it this way, because there is much less code to write, and you shave off all the fluff and get to the point, surely that makes the code easier to read, because you're not left scratching your head and asking why certain counters are included, what a variable is set as at any one point in the program (this is due to it's strong typing of course). Sure, there are still certain concepts to understand with functional programs that aids your reading of other peoples code... But then, that's the same with programming in general anyway!

  13. Re:The memories... on Purely Functional Data Structures · · Score: 3, Interesting
    The solutions were very elegant, but very difficult to debug and very difficult to reason about.

    Just to clear up, this is because of the lazy evaluator. Because code is executed until it needs to be, you never know what's happening when. For example:
    System.out.println("I have reached this point");
    would be meaningless in a functional program, because from where was this code executed? Hence, not only have you got to re-learn how to write your programs, you have to re-learn how to debug them!

    (As a footnote, I'd say the advantages (lazy evaluation, advanced pattern matching functions, less code, recursion, etc.) outweigh the disadvantages (hard to debug) by a mile!)

    Maybe the bouncing wasn't so much censored, as changed for the good of the game? Maybe somebody at the U.S. headquarters with half a brain realised it was unnecessary and could reflect bad on the series in the U.S. (I know I wasn't impressed when I first saw the R. Mika character).
