First thought I had too. I'm not sure how someone can see the backlash against the PS3 on the web, and not conclude that the PS3 is on shaky groud well before launch...
I just can't agree with that. The level-grinding may be a PITA sometimes, but when my wife and I were both playing WoW it was tons of fun. We had a tiny guild consisting of people we knew in real life, worked co-operatively all the time, ignored the idiots and played on a PvE server.
We played Diablo 2 together, and WoW was just an extension of that game play to us. We never let it become an addiction, didn't think twice about rerolling to try another class/race, helped each other out and just had fun. It's the way MMORPGs are meant to be played.
The only reason we quit was the impending birth of our Daughter, but we plan to play again once she is a little older and has a more regular bed-time and schedule.
People paid $900 for a NEO-GEO didn't they? This is supposed to be more than just a console as well. It would hurt them, sure, but it wouldn't be fatal...
Re-reading my reply, I think I may not have made the point entirely clear. The argument regarding violence or political leanings isn't really the issue.
My argument is more against the concept that exposure to material (A) invokes mental adjustment (B). My take is that outside cases of brainwashing, exposure to any sort of media is unlikely to change one's personal beliefs and/or leanings, and that any argument stating otherwise is pretty much baseless on it's face.
Using the violence argument might have muddied the waters a bit.
Maybe I'm being reactionary, but if 'playing war games can influenece you politcally', are you not opening yourself up to the slippery slope that ends with 'playing video games can make you violent'?
Video games that people play tend to be a product of their leanings, not the other way around. People who like violence will play violent video games, and fantasy nerds (myself included) will play RPGs. In this case, people who play war games probably like strategy and tactics.
Chalk this one up to the media looking for scapegoats and excuses to explain personal behaviours yet again.
Canadian DMCA would never happen. They would have to overturn the Copyright Act in it's entirety.
Besides, 19 seats out of 308 might be enough to withold a majority vote, but it is not nearly enough to push through something of their own agenda. Unless it's on the Liberal's agenda, the NDP really have no say of importance.
As a Canadian, I just want to tell you how these rulings all effect me and my family and friends: I buy lots of music, movies and software. Lots. More than lots.
I download music and movies and (very occasionally) games without fear of reprisal, since the Supreme Court here actually interprets our law correctly, by reading both the letter and the spirit of the law.
One supports the other. If a movie/song is terrible, I delete it. If it's good, I buy it, and often, other movies/songs by the same artists. If you track my spending habits, my downloading is directly linked to my spending. I'm the same way with books, I hit the library and if I read something I know I want to read again, I buy it.
I know this is a rant, but I hope the rest of the world realizes that THIS IS HOW COPYRIGHTS SHOULD WORK!
Console protection is far from perfect anyhow, and there is another thorn in the side of console developers: rentals.
In my neck of the woods, at least, there is one store in a city of 600,000 that rents PC games, and they rarely have any new titles. With the console side, you can rent them at pretty much every video store around.
Once you have modded your console, you never have to think about copy protections again, nor downloading rips, or cracks, etc... Just rent, copy, and you are done.
Reminds me of a game I used to play on the C64, but I'll be damned if I can recall the title.
Basically, you work a cash register, and you get a total and a number of bills. Your job is to figure out the correct change, and hand it over using the least number of coins possible. Of course, you are also timed.
Now the point of this post: These are both simulations to prepare kids for low-paying, repetitive jobs in the service industry. The fact that this one is linked to a particular brand also makes it a form of viral advertising.
It had several RPG elements. Hero units would level up over time, could quest for items and experience, and be equipped with items bought and discovered. Sure it was limited in the RPG sense, but so is Fire Emblem and it was on the list.
Hold on, hold on... Did someone just make a comment about 'overprice Wintel PC' and then recommend a Mac?!
The pot and kettle just exploded...

So, you want realistic high fantasy? Exactly how do you think that would work?
YouTube is blocked at work here. Is there any other source for this video yet?
In one of the sequences in the game, you crash a Warthog into a tree at 160MPH and blame it on a guy named Dietrich.

I would have thought GTA would be #1, but the lack of GTA on Nintendo platforms seems to be enough to keep Mario in 1st.
Oh dear God. Did I really spell summary that badly?
When the suammry on /. is almost as long as the linked article, is it really worth posting?

I'm sure I'm not the only one who played Stroker 64...

Well, that's one way to placate them, right?

Off topic, I know, but the F-16 cannot do a Cobra, and that is way more impressive than an Immelmann.

Oddly enough, 'compliance testing' seems to be taking a while, and I might not have them ready to go for another week or two ;)

Err... Not that I would do this. Heavens, no.
Let us take a moment to curse Chronicles of Riddick for ruining that 100% average...

Folks, this is not a good thing.
