Already happens in some states. I have had robo calls (in AZ) from political campaigns. I trace back the number and inform the jackasses I will never vote for anyone who invades my privacy like that.
I'm seriously wondering if any of this will matter in a few more years. The PC becomes the tablet becomes the smart phone becomes the cloud becomes the....what exactly? We demand total integration with all our gadgets so it is inevitable that the first OS to fully do that wins. I totally expect to see integration between Windows and Linux soon and I'm not talking WINE.
Good point but my question would be what if the barrage of emails were ongoing and almost non-stop? Would that not constitute a willful 'mail bombing' with intent to shutdown their email server? If they are not able to, as you say "empty their mailboxes in a reasonable manner," then the intent is to do harm.
And I still prefer "potentially violating individual's civil rights as well as privacy laws" than protecting a bunch of fuck ups that use any damn excuse to loot and burn! How about shop keepers rights to not have their business burned down? How about peoples right to walk down the street and not be beat up by a bunch of assholes? Where are their civil rights you fuckwit?
As someone who has worked in sales most of my life and managed sales support teams I see one flaw in the plan. Watson is logical. People are not. Anyone in sales knows the vast ocean of illogical reasoning that comes spewing from peoples mouths during the sales process. Anyone in IT has their favorite stories of dealing with people who either are clueless or just temporally insane at that moment.
Considering the huge opportunity for graft I wonder how many containers are simply off loaded at sea to other vessels and reported lost? Insurance covers the loss for the owners of the containers and the crew makes a killing.
When you have a budget as big as they have whats to lose? Go ahead and make it and see if the market bites. Some certainly will so it's just a matter of how many. Yeah its a follow the leader mentality but so what? I don't think MS truly cares about a flop here and there as long as they keep in the game. Did Zune or Kin really hurt them much? In this forest even the blind squirrel will sometimes find an acorn.

My pipe dream is a tablet that comes with decent RAM, speed, ports etc and NO OS! Just the ability to plug in a USB drive and load your own choice.

Blackberry most likely feels being proactive is better than waiting to be subpoenaed and looking like they are protecting looters and criminals.
