If you bump the 1.25 to 1.42 I'm sure it's fine. I wouldn't want to bump the 1.42 any higher as it's not worth voiding the warranty for the TINY speed increase and the possibilty of the case not being able to handle the increased heat.

  2. Free shipping is the way to go on big ticket items on Amazon Offers 2-Day Shipping For $79/Year · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have bought many items over the years from Amazon as I'm always relatively pleased with their prices and ALWAYS pleased with their service... Just yesterday I purchased a new GPS for myself. Being an avid geocacher I am always upgrading my GPSr to make my life a little easier.

This particular upgrade wasn't just for geocaching but more for actual navigating. My fiancé needed to use autorouting to get around town with her sister dress shopping and autorouting would be the best way. What a great excuse for me to plop down $430 on a new GPS!

Ok, so I do some research with froogle and some of the other price watching sites and check Amazon just for kicks. They of course weren't showing me their price on the site so I add it to my cart to find out that it's $499.99 for the GPSMap76C. Eh, for kicks I check out the price on their 76CS (usually $75+ more than the C). I find it on sale for $428 and free STANDARD SAVER shipping. Estimated arrival sometime after the 10th and before the 15th.

With prices for shipping starting at $7.65 and me not really needing this for the fiancé until the end of February I took the free shipping. I am THRILLED I did. Last night I received word that even though Amazon.com original claimed the device wouldn't even ship until the 4th it was already out the door and en-route to me. This morning I check and find that the estimated ARRIVAL time from UPS is the 4th of February.

For no additional cost I just got 3-day shipping via UPS.

I guess Amazon's "Prime" service could be useful for families that order more than 7 items from Amazon yearly but don't spend enough to get the freebie shipping. I really can't imagine it paying off for many others but I am glad I held off on upgrading the shipping this time :)

And it doesn't matter whether the phone is hand-held or handsfree, he said. Any activity requiring a driver to "actively be part of a conversation" likely will impair driving abilities, Strayer said.

First off, I love the word "likely" which means that they really don't know. Second off, we should create only single passenger cars as talking to other people in the vehicle requires you to be actively involved in conversation and we should ban CB radios from all delivery vehicles and Police cars. Should this move on to airplanes as well?

Strayer said they found that when 18- to-25-year-olds were placed in a driving simulator and talked on a cellular phone, they reacted to brake lights from a car in front of them as slowly as 65- to 74-year-olds who were not using a cell phone.

And what? I don't see the point here. The elderly can still drive.

The numbers, which come down to milliseconds, might not seem like much, but it could be the difference to stopping in time to avoid hitting a child in the street, Strayer said.

Ahhhh yes, this affects your children!

The only silver lining to the new research is that elderly drivers using a cell phone aren't any more of a hazard to themselves and others than young drivers. Previous research suggested older drivers may face what Strayer described as a "triple whammy."

Hah. So it's only the younger generations that have these problems. The older people have learned over the years how to walk and chew gum at the same time. Driving and cell phone use... The TRIPLE WHAMMY THREAT against your children! News at 11!

The person with the iPod would have given some back, and in the end maybe the music division would have gotten a(nother) quick sense of why even an MS employee could have made that choice. Might have resulted in an actual competitive advantage for the eventual MS product.

Oh barf. Who fucking cares? If the original scenario actually happened you know what I would have done? Walked away. You know why? Because I just don't get involved in the petty little bullshit that goes on with workplace drama.

If Suzy is banging Mark after work who the fuck cares? If Amy is wearing the same clothes as Jenny but only less expensive versions I just don't care.

Stupid, petty, childish, work-place drama exists everywhere. There's no need to whine about it online and there's certainly no need to bring it up on Slashdot just because it has MSFT, Apple, and iPod contained in the story.

Use whatever fucking MP3 player you like. Drive whatever car you want. Fuck whoever you want to fuck. Keep your mouths shut about what other people do unless it has some direct impact on your fucking job.

The survey, conducted by researchers at the University of Connecticut, is billed as the largest of its kind. More than 100,000 students, nearly 8,000 teachers and more than 500 administrators at 544 public and private high schools took part in early 2004.

Now this is NOT an insignificant study. 100k students and only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories? Excuse me? This misinformation must be coming from somewhere... Are these kids skipping American History/Civics and moving into Psychology and Sociology courses instead?

About half the students said the government can restrict any indecent material on the Internet. It can't.

Well, unfortunately it HAS been restricting indecent material. Forcing various institutions to enable filters on content. Yeah, it can't stop ALL the content out there but it is getting closer and closer to that. With the scare tactics and every parent believing that every sensationalist news "story" on the TV is GOING TO AFFECT THEIR CHILDREN they are pushing this crap through without thinking about the consequences.

The study suggests that students embrace First Amendment freedoms if they are taught about them and given a chance to practice them, but schools don't make the matter a priority.

Of course they don't. Going through high-school English classes I was told repeatedly how I was to respond when it came time for essay exams. If you did not give the teacher what they wanted you were given a poor grade. It wasn't until college (and I remember our second semester English professor being appalled) that I was able to write how I felt about a topic and back it up with real information. The professor would grade you on your research and your proof and not how he/she particularly felt the topic should be supported.

How can we expect high-school aged kids to think that they should be given a chance to practice their First Amendment rights when they are under the constant force feeding of information?

More than one in five schools offer no student media opportunities; of the high schools that do not offer student newspapers, 40 percent have eliminated them in the last five years.

That's because the government and consolidated media doesn't want free thinkers. They want people who follow the status quo. Why stir the pot when you can just report the silly rumors, scare tactics and sensationalism, and car chases above California?
