If other countries believe the US will refuse to allow due process in any case it can label "terrorism," they will be unwilling to extradite criminals to us, which is a net loss for the cause of criminal justice.
Are you kidding? Other countries believe that the US will refuse due process, most likely torture, and definately imprison indefinitely any 'terrorists' that they send. That's like a politician's wet dream - they get to give their problems to the US and score browie points at the same time.
The fact of the matter is that a country will give the US any of it's citizens they want without complaint. Usually the US wants someone that the country doesn't want to defend, so the US is at worst taking a person the country's government doesn't care about, at best they are taking someone that the country wants to get rid of. If they are lucky, they might even get intelligence back from the US from any torture sessions.
For a country, this is a really cheap way to get on the US's good side. The fact that it is morally repugnant and very much illegal under most domestic and international law is hardly likely to stop any politician from supporting it, now that they know they can get away with it.
So I want all these excuses of NOT running Freenet to stop. Anybody can find a 'junk' computer and put Freenet on it, no excuses! Get those nodes up and running--the more nodes that stay online 24/7 the better. And trust me... Once you see the amount of creativity that true total anonymity brings, you'll be glad you at least saw it. You might not like it but at least you know it's there and what it's about. And like GI Joe said--Knowing is half the battle.
So, how much bandwidth does your setup use? Because I don't have an unlimited supply...
Anyway, I found since I started working there that when I'm 'dressed for work' and go out into the world, the level of service and attention I receive is pretty significantly different from what I was used to. In fact I've tested it a few times; gone to the same restaurant a few times wearing work clothes, then gone a few times in a pair of cargos and a t-shirt, just to see what happens. People are politer, service is faster, I get called "sir" a lot more...it's not a huge difference, but it's noticeable.
The reverse also works. Everytime I go anywhere where I'm going to haggle about price I tend to dress like a refugee from the bad part of town. Hobo dress code = automatic discount.
Your comment just reminded me that if we did get a regionalized Internet, there would be half as many Gentoo zealots throwing plugs in unrelated topics.
Hosting porn sites in Australia has been banned since 2000 under the Broadcasting Services Amendment (Online Services) Act 1999
Considering the differentials in price between hosting costs in AU and US this would have effected about 0.00001% of all porn sites owned by Australians.
Are you sure it isn't that the primary reason you want the UN to take over is because you dislike the US government so much? If you ask me, the primary reason to oppose a UN takeover of DNS is that the UN answers to governments instead of people. Maybe you European types like that sort of thing. You did, after all, basically eliminate any individual level involvement in your new government when you set up the EU. I, however, would like a body that is actually accountable to ordinary people to be in charge... even if, for now, that means a subset of ordinary people.
Speaking as an Oceanian type, the only place that Americans are ordinary people is in America - everywhere else they are considered to be quite abnormal.
Seriously, the main issue is clearly one of bias, whether that be of America or any other nation. The point behind ceding control to the UN would be to increase the number of biased parties in the hope that their respective biases cancel each other out.
This whole grey goo scare is just bad science fiction. A machine that goes on replicating forever, eating everything in its path? If that were possible, don't you think that evolution would have come up with it already?
Woodworking tools are cheap, ubiquitous and far more capable than what was available 20, 40 or 60 years ago. Where are all the people building beautiful, elegant and functional furniture?
Um, that would be the third world that you are talking about - no one in the first world can afford to make their living carving furniture but they can make their living importing furniture made by peasants in countries without clean water.
Disabling BIOS writes except when booted from a floppy would be a start.
Who uses those anymore?
This whole thing is just a huge beat up on Microsoft's part to push 'trusted computing' - 'look, here's a non existant threat! If you were running Vista (featuring new, won't run if not signed by us code) you would be safe.'. Poppycock, I say!
I doubt he would too since this thing runs Windows XP
What? No Vista? I would have thought that Microsoft would be using this as another opportunity to 'foster innovation'. And really, what's the use of this thing unless you can have portable, wireless Halo 3 deathmatch?
Unfortunately most of the extra processing speed this gets you will be sucked up the all the DRM software running sefl-checks on itself, calling the mothership, and triple checking that you are licensed to excecute the next instruction.
So your computer will be nice and fast, just not any of your applications...
DRM? More likely all my fresh new cycles will be eaten by running the Aero UI in Vista. My C64 seemed a lot faster than my Amd does today.
Cfuse's law: Any gains from Moore's law will be offset by bloat in Microsoft's latest OS.
An upgrade of the leaflet idea is actually in the document. There is a requirement for a precision-guided leaflet canister. (That's easy to do. The "smart bomb" kit, the Joint Direct Attack Munition, is actually a strap-on unit for dumb bombs. All that's needed is a compatible leaflet can.)
"This message has been delivered by a precision-guided leaflet bomb aimed at you. If this had been a real bomb, you would now be dead. If you want to surrender, drop your weapons and walk east. Have a nice day."
PsyOps in the desert - a text adventure:
You are standing in the middle of your ruined country, looking for food and water, when a large metal tube with fins on it falls out of the sky and lands at your feet.
:Examine tube
You look at the tube, stencilled on the side are the words "Smart Bomb - made in U.S.A.". Below the writing, someone has written "Die Fucking Towelheads" in chalk. It looks like you can open the end of the tube.
:Open tube
You open the tube, inside is a letter which reads: This message has been delivered by a precision-guided leaflet bomb aimed at you. If this had been a real bomb, you would now be dead. If you want to surrender, drop your weapons and walk east. Have a nice day.
:Drop weapon
You have no weapon.
:Inventory
You have some dirt and a burqa, both of which you are wearing.
:Go east
You walk east. After about 5 minutes of walking you hear a click, which you have just enough time to realise is a land mine before both your legs are blown off. YOU HAVE DIED.
There are dozens of products out there to do this. Linksys alone makes several. You obviously didn't search slashdot, google, etc. The fact this article got accepted... Words fail me.
That's nothing, wait until Taco greenlights the dupe.
I really don't know how people come up with statements like this. The facts could not be more different. There are more than 200 different languages than run on the JVM. A large proportion of them integrate well with Java, and can used Java classes and libraries. There are implementations of LISP, Ruby, Python, Basic, Modula, Pascal, Fortran and even COBOL. There are currently far more languages implemented on the JVM than on.NET.
Then maybe they should spend their money on making this fact more widely known. I didn't know this, and I doubt many others did either.
Still, even with 200 implementations it's not quite visual studio, is it?

I concur. Real is a joke, and this sort of comment just cements that fact.
Anyone with half a brain can see that the DRM war is over before it's begun. They lost.
Grandpa said: "It was the best dry sex I'd ever had!"

Misses the real question: If I pray for someone to die, are they more likely to die?
You know nothing ... solid - aluminium - butt - plug.
Rich people. What else is new (regarding poor people getting the shaft with AIDS treatments)?
The reverse also works. Everytime I go anywhere where I'm going to haggle about price I tend to dress like a refugee from the bad part of town. Hobo dress code = automatic discount.
Half of an infinite number is still plenty.

What is the sound of one fish slapping?
So I'm supposed to buy Vista just for the new chrome? I don't *bloody* think so!

Locust.

It's a problem of economy, not skills and tools.

A) Be *very* careful what you wish for, and B) You can have the bitch, but only on a permanent basis ...

Well, it's nice to see that the propaganda is working on someone.

E or meat, bigger is always better.
