    Some are metal some are glass. I think the first glass platters were in the IBM GXP60/75 drives. (called "Deathstars" b/c they failed alot). They used a glass platter coated in magnetic material.

    Some bellsouth sales weenie convinced a friend of mine that he could carry his dsl modem around with him and plug it into *any* phone jack to get broadband. Needless to say he was a bit disappointed when I enlightened him.

    No, I don't have any examples. But I'm not saying that that a Linux worm is likely, just possible. It's much harder to do, and the heterogeneous environment that is the linux 'sector' would mean that any worm can only affect a small subset of the installed base. To be honest, the proposal would still fail even if there were zero linux worms, because MS could point to linux and say "So who pays IF something hits them?"

    And if a linux worm goes around eating up gigabits of bandwidth, what do you do? Send the bill to linus? redhat? It's a nice idea, but its unworkable in practice.

    I have found that I'll play mods for a game far longer than I would play the actual game. Since consoles don't let you install mods or even custom maps, ill stay on pc

    Its interesting to note that the final version of the patriot act was released only 5 hours or so before the vote. Even the the congress-critters had a team of aides ready, they could read and anaylze the entire 542-page (i think) behemoth. If congress had actually been able to read the bill bofore the vote, some may have changed their minds.

    I'd say that at least half the time I've downloaded files from them, there has been a 0-1 min wait. I don't think that the artificaially inflate wait times.

    If you had read the article, you'd know that it costs the IRS $0.45 to collect $1. This cost has not been reduced much in the past 2 decades.

    So did I. How did you not break even tho? The commission rates were insane- I was making 30% commission by my 3rd week. ...I was always amused by the fact that people who bought those knives always cut themselves constantly for the first 2 weeks or so...

    Its called presumption of innocence. I shouldn't have to prove to the state that I'm innocent. The burden of proof needs to be on them. If I keep my savings in a mattress, then the govt. has to prove that I cheated on my taxes. By default, I an innocent regardless of my actions regarding the storage of my money.

    The Sony C1 Picturebooks have had crusoe chips since 2001. I'm typing this on a C1-VPK right now. There's one tiny 1cm fan in the entire case, and it only runs about 5% of the time. Definitely my favorite laptop of all time.

    Even worse, Intel built a 512Mib limit into the northbridge chips that shipped with Dell dimension 4100 desktops. They took pc133 at a time when intel was pushing rdram. So they artificially limited the ram, thus requiring anyone whoe wanted more space to but rambus junk at 10x the price.

    Actually, a 600Mhz fanless eden board has a maximum power consumption of about 15W. Probably more if you maxed out the ram tho.

    The problem is that it wasn't implemented very well. When you activate the normalization (called AI sound on the menu), BG music gets loud enough to drown out dialogue. It's worthless. We just hit the mute button when commercials come on.

    Another useful feature for QuickLaunch is that it doesn't *have* to be in the task bar. I dragged mine to the top of my screen and set it to autohide. So now I have immediate access to about 35 icons whenever I move my mouse to the top of the screen. This also frees up more space for the taskbar at the bottom. I also added an adress bar to it, so I can open a web page without having to open IE/Firebird first.
