  3. Caller Idenfication != Caller Id on Microsoft's Acoustic Caller ID Patent · · Score: 0
Has any anyone actually read the patent description? This is for speaker identification/verification (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_verification ) not the caller id! That would simply not make sense otherwise.

It is the problem of verifying a person's identity solely by their voice. It can be used for purposes such as security applications that use a voice print to replace typed passwords and PINs. The voice is then used to authenticate the user.
Some companies already have developed such facilities using different kind of algorithm. http://www.nuance.com/speakerverification/ http://www.nuecho.com/content/view/27/144/lang,en/ Microsoft innovation stands in the fact that they are doing this processing without interfering while the caller interacts with the system instead of actually prompting for verification/identification ahead. This patent appears to have been filled prior Tellme acquisition.

Being from Montreal, I obviously read local newspapers like Le Devoir (www.ledevoir.com) or La Presse (www.lapresse.com) but I happen from time to time reading both the National Post (Candien wide edition) and the New York Times (New England Edition), mostly for their columnists, which gives me some point of view from my surrounding area. Local news is great but I need a bigger picture.

I wonder how such a post can get moded +5 Interesting?!

True, we had great innovation in the past decades but it's been so for centuries! From Roman horn, to Baroque harpsichord, electric guitare, Hammond B3. And now we have fusion of all kind (rock-dance-funk: The Rapture, experimental-progressive-rock :Sonic Youth, etc...) Some artists offers denatured-poignant-folk (Devendra Benhard), some others are the Beatles of this era, pushing the limits, once again (Radiohead). We ARE in an innovative music world!

Shame on those who couldn't find the innovative artists. Statements like "today's music sucks" is just plain bullsh*t.

The internet is there not only for file swaping but also to discover new artists/bands.

  16. Re:Ye olde Samba on Distributed Filesystems for Linux? · · Score: 1

Samba is NO good at sharing homes. Lots of applications perform file locking in the user's home directory, which, as one may know, requires the system to perform a syslink (go on, try 'strace lockfile foo.txt'). It turns out that Samba do not perform symlink and hence resulting in an incapability to perform file locking. And by the way, it is definitely not distributed:-)
