  2. Seriously, the west has been under attack from Russia, CHina, North Korea, Iran, Syria, and a few others, for the last 20 years. We have been in a defensive posture, and losing badly.

    So let's start by attacking Canada and western Europe.

    That used to be true but modern diesel cars have particle filters. Today petrol cars emit more fine particles than diesel ones.

    Imagine a hybrid ship using conventional propulsion but having the opportunity to save a certain fraction of it's fuel by sailing. It exists.

    The Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 is anti-terrorism legislation even if it wouldn't say so in the name. It was written as a response to the 9/11 attack like the USA Patriot Act. Have a look here.

    Also a branch of an Icelandic bank was taken over by the British state a few days ago using anti-terrorism legislation. If you can declare a bank a terrorist organisation there doesn't seem to be any limits on where you can apply anti-terrorist legislation. Frightening..

    Suppose I wanted to buy a good mp3-player now. I could buy one of these cracked players and install Rockbox. Still I think I should rather buy a player that does all I want out of the box. Has anybody recently bought a good player that supports ogg vorbis and Linux? There are compatibility lists but they don't seem to reflect what I see in the shops today.

    Does this count as a Slashdot meme already? Every time there is a story on Slashdot about how the net is somehow better somewhere else than in the US the result is "But the US is so big" and then we get "There is a country that is even less densely populated than the US that has better net connections.

    Some whales (e.g. the blue whale, sperm whale) are still endangered. All whales are not endangered - not in a scientific way at least.

    As to your second argument: Here is a true story. I once worked on a farm where the farmer kept sheep. He sold them for meat but one of them was his favourite. He said it was more intelligent than the others and that it had feelings. It was never slaughtered but when it died it was buried. You may also care more about certain animals but should you try to punish people who make their living out of them? How about India boycotting countries where cows are killed?

    What's bad about whaling (assuming you don't catch any endangered species)?
