That may well apply to the law-abiding people foolish enough to visit fortress USA, but FTA:
Based on all the information available to them, federal agents turn back about 45 foreign criminals a day at U.S. borders...
If I were American, I think I would sleep better at night knowing that the border guards just shot them dead.
Last year I, as a Canadian, flew a one week round-trip from SE Asia to Chicago with a passport issued in Europe. After the treatment I received in O'Hare, I wish never to return to America. And I am as white and middle class as can be. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a profiled minority. And it also pissed me off that I had to show my passport to buy a drink (I'm 38). What has America become? That's not rhetorical.
I taught in a Thai high school for a year. Thai children, at least in
Bangkok, are quite proficient with computers, more so than you would
think. BKK is rife with pc cafes and gaming spots, and the schools are
largely wired. However, the level of teaching ALL SUBJECTS is appalling,
outside of the private schools. Thai children constantly do very poorly
on benchmark testing, within ASEAN itself.
It is not permitted to fail in a Thai school. So, the teachers either
keep testing and testing until a pass is obtained, or they simply make
the lowest grade a pass, and distribute the rest of the marks
accordingly. I know, because I was forced to do this. The Thais need to
focus on sham. And as far as I know, the Thai university system is not
accredited.
In the provinces, things are the same, except not nearly as wired.
Clearly, when ideological differences get in the way of even naming the community, you have a problem. Then again, having a common enemy will never be enough to guarantee harmony.
So, if you order a halal meal, it won't be reported. but if you eat a vegitarian meal, it will.
my point is not that halal meals should be indicated to the americans (pretty f'n far from that, actually). my point is simply that america would profile muslims, but this particular item (food choice) only allows them to profile 16 year old girls and rastas (please accept my hyperbole). outside of a mad powergrab, what is the point of this?
i cannot begin to imagine the thought process that lead to this filtering.
once again, a great example of regulations that will have no positive effect on terrorism, which can only cause great discomfort for the majority, and further weaken any notions of individual liberty.
and before any of you go on about how an airplane (or shopping mall, or street corner, or toilet, or your front lawn, etc.) is not private space, let me simply point out that at least without the collection of this data, my being there is not the grounds for the wet dream of some analyst. but now it is, thanks to the greatest democracy the world has ever known.
it says "congress shall make no law"; it does not restrict your rights to your relation with congress.
moreover, the note was addressing the tsa head, who is a gov't appointee, approved by congress (iirc).
searching for farm sex does not necessarily mean "you like to conduct sexual relations with farm animals." it could mean any number of things, from a poorly formulated search term, to incredulity that such practices exist.
the ambiguity of the dead letter is one of the reasons to oppose the sharing of such data.
not being british, i ask: is council (here) synonomous with social housing, or simply with municipal services? if the former, it sounds like the poor are gonna get screwed more by this than anyone else, according to your take. so, what's new?
well, in that case epicentre must mean dead centre, and 'internet' (aka the tubes) must mean an email.
come on - technical language has a place, and there is a world of difference between raising and begging questions.
um, you will.
the bronfmans made their money bootlegging liquor. this is delicious irony.

apparently anything can be modded +5 informative on slashdot.
me neither - i don't imagine many /.rs do ...
If they claim this audience can be monetized, how can they consider it to be non-legit?

unsound conclusion: mistake implies intentionality.

i thought the checkpoint was still in america. i guess it no longer is.

because i imagine that one day older technology will be outlawed by act of congress, like analogue television
i just ran out of mod points. i wish i had them now.

I didn't know that Anonymous Coward was a relatively common anglo name. Clearly, though, with a name like that, the cowboys will hate you.
There are naturalised Chinese Americans too.
What about Chinese Americans visiting their homeland?
