  1. Back on topic on Emissions of Key Greenhouse Gas Stabilize · · Score: 1

Since the original discussion was of Methane levels... Methane is probably going down in the atmosphere due to methane (natural gas) extraction operations of the oil/gas industry. In Alabama about 120 Billion standard cubic feet of gas is extracted annually from coal bed methane recovery operations. (30% of State production) It is probable that 100% (and more) of that methane was escaping into the atmosphere unburned on an on going basis. Currently the extraction is by recovering ground water and extracting the gas similar to a soda fizzing. While the route of ground water movement in Alabama may have changed, it was all going out in "real time" anyway.

For those who wonder, it is probable that the conditions for generation of this methane have been suppressed by extraction operations. This is because water is part of the process. This means that large volumes of CO2 were created by decomposition of Methane due to the natural emissions. These have probably been reduced dramatically by the diversion to Man handled extraction and the loss of water to support Methane production and movement in the rock. While man uses produce C02 this also means that the amounts as a whole are probably reduced dramatically.

Don't mistake me for a supporter of the Oil/Gas industry or an opponent, I am neither. I just wanted to explain that the processes for Carbon Dioxide and Methane introduction into the atmosphere are dramatically more complex than commonly known. These processes also are much more rapid than generally known. What may or may not be known by most people is that nearly 100% of all liquid hydrocarbon or gas in the rock world wide will be expelled by the planet into the Atmosphere in the next few hundred years anyway. The human influence is probably more of just a route change than a prevention or promotion of the dispersal of this material. I am aware that many people on this forum assault any scientific reporting. If you disagree. just post against what I say. Skip moderation because that is just suppression of good discussion.

Honestly one of the great myths of the 21st century is that of the human influence in this matter. There are forces suggesting changes in the climate that are vastly greater than any human factors. These include solar variability. The sun has changed since 1900 by over 1% in brightness. (Increased) The particle flux in space is suggesting massive changes as well. There are mechanisms associated with the operations of energy flow that also suggest massive changes. All of these mechanisms dwarf by several powers of 10 any human influence. There are historical and geological records that indicate that variations here occur vastly beyond any human control. This is not an argument for the continuation of oil/gas etc. They are as used pretty dirty stuff. Pollution is enough of an argument against oil.

I am involved in development of alternative power sources for the world. It soon will be delivered (not my invention) that the human race will have unlimited energy without fuel. At that time we will have to confront the fact that energy generation itself from these fuel free sources is in fact a problem as well. The real dirty issues here are human over population and just plain arrogance. I know of 9 separate technologies that generate energy without fuel. All of these are progressing towards market presentation at one level or another. When these appear rather than being saved, the human race will be doomed by them unless we face the real issues of human behavior and of human intentions. I am well aware of just how complex these realities are.

The problem with America High Schools is essentially how they are connected to college admissions. They have been geared so tightly to college admissions that real not college career work like Auto Service etc have been completely passed by. As such the people who don't want to spend their entire life bonded to a computer or in some arts and parties program are left out of the picture. This makes high school worthless for about 1/2 of its attendees.

The other problem is one of the US Government who has seen fit to destroy the value for study by running a trade war against its own citizens by taxing them to death while not taxing their foreign competition. This has destroyed the value of education for the high end students. Doctors etc who graduate several hundred thousand dollars in debt find that jobs which pay back the debt don't exist because the jobs were taken by foreigners who didn't have the tax load the Americans had. Please don't read into this any hostility towards non US persons. This is entirely a stupid US Government problem.

The result is that the high and low performance ends of education have lost value and that pinches the value for all parties. If American Education is unwilling to face this reality, its tax base will go out of business and thus it will too.

The issues of the wasteful spending on parties who are unlikely to produce any real results for society also exist. The whole system has become messed up. So here are some solutions.

[1] Lets take the student loan program for college and determine how much graduates of certain types earn on average. Then divide that by 1/2 and limit the loan values for programs to that level. (Many details left out) Limit the minimum payment to $20,000 and if the program doesn't produce that amount, don't loan on it. [2] Come up with some performance grants for students and make teachers win a fractional bonus for such grants placing students. [3] Encourage the development of skilled trade schools again. [4] Tell any company complaining about a shortage of labor in their field to cough up a grand or loan program for Americans to study their trade. [5] Most importantly lets lay a tax equal to 4 years wages on the import of any employee to fill jobs in the USA to repay the tax base damage they do to the Americans who must pay taxes here while they learn etc.

These are a good start but best of all these would preserve the security of the USA and its strength while rewarding young people who advance.

The mechanism for heating or cooling the earth by dielectric transmission of energy is not secret or some other similar thing. This is the mechanism by which a diode/capacitor ladder steps voltage in the back of a CRT display. It is standard plasma or solid state mechanisms. Just because most people have not heard of them or the effects doesn't mean they are not real. I got introduced to these by my father who was a radio technical person working with high power transmitters in Alaska for the US Army in 1950's. The short story is that large oil filled capacitors will recharge without external source if their temperature changes dramatically. The process works in both directions. It is the principal behind several novel refrigeration technologies of today. The atmosphere and surface of the earth is a capacitor set with periodic breakdown. I know about these and the level of the currents because my father also worked on buried cables. Rest assured there are more than adequate currents exist to either freeze or cook the planet. In one test cable from Spokane, Wa to Seattle, Wa they measured a current of 20,000 amperes at something in the order of 15,000 volts to the inch. (Figure that current out if you want... its about 5,037,120,000,000 Kw.) These currents are not atypical with major solar events.

Without trying to get too deep the Faraday Unipolar or homopolar generator format is what you are looking at in space surrounding a star or the earth. If the magnetic field of such a device is generated by fixed magnets on a rest, the device converts torque into a current. If the magnets rotate with the disk the device still generates a current but in this case it does not convert torque into current. No torque load exists. This is DePalma's N-Machine. It works. Replications have been shown and you can find them or build your own. The resulting device sees a massive current pulling items to the perimeter and to the polar region of the axle. The nature of large currents conducting down a plasma will produce some very predictable plasma effects. These will appear being carried along the exterior surfaces of the ecliptic plane disk. These will accelerate objects at increasing speeds away from the disk center as observed on the sun and earth and all other planetary bodies. These are what produce the currents between Jupiter, Saturn and their moons. The effect will be vortex storms above and below the ecliptic a modest distance (15 deg or so to 30 deg). These will have higher latitude harmonics. (Oppositely charged) On earth these are hurricanes, the sun they are sunspots, Jupiter and Saturn these are spots, etc. The polar exit will produce displays which are vertical vortex structures in a circle around the pole. These are also observed in all locations both in the solar system and outside of it.

No I was not being troll. The non-uniform temperature question is really funny. There is a lot of evidence that our planets etc may not be the temperature we suspected. X-Ray telescopic (Chandra) observations of the planets and other places say vastly different temperatures. This also explains storms in places where solar heating doesn't support them like Saturn and beyond.

Actually the whole issue of what we know and what we think we know about the sun and the solar system is a real problem. Spectrograph data for 250 years has told us what the sun was actually made of. Contrary to the published claims of a hydrogen and helium star, those are actually trace elements. The spectra and you can see it on SOHO shows that the sun is primarily IRON. That's all that pretty green spectra (f

For those who have argued no global warming. Sorry it is happening. For those who argue it is the result of CO2 emissions check out the data and you will find that there isn't anything to support your contention. The top Greenhouse gas on the planet is water. The CO2 emissions of today are fossil fuels. They once were in the atmosphere. Get a life folks it isn't going to end life if the carbon gets out and about again. The parent post's discussion of S02 brings up an interesting note. We have been scrubbing that stuff out of our smoke as of late.

Now there is a genuine threat to life if we burn these products too fast. We may well reduce the oxygen level critically. It already is happening locally in some areas of the world.

Now I am going to get out and tell what is really going on. There is an electrical universe out there. The temperature of the earth is related to the electrical current flow in near space to the earth. This is complex but it allows the earth to be cooled or heated radically based upon this flow. Yes the earth could be burned to a cinder or it could be crashed into super cold state by this electrical flow. Nothing we do on earth could even really affect this reality. At this time the earth is gaining energy rapidly from space. This gain is not by radiant energy from the sun. It is due to the electrical field around the earth. (Cosmic plasma forces) The primary methodology for this energy to be transmitted is by dielectric transmission. This method allows massive currents of energy to be passed by plate voltage potentials without any apparent conduction through the plate. The dielectric of the atmosphere and the surface of the earth is doing this. The currents here are massive beyond belief.

Do I support cleaning up the pollution of the earth. Yes. I think trashing our earth with any trash is awful. Do I believe that CO2 is warming the earth? No! Are we doing damage to the earth and the conditions that support life on it? Absolutely! Should we reign in the oil and coal industries? That was needed decades ago. Should we pass out trash science in order to get things done? No! We should actually talk about the real problems and deal with them honestly.

Again if you don't like what I say please get a life!

When we tried to program we ran up against limitations associated with the programming languages available. They bluntly told us that information was proprietary and we should hire Claris Works to write the software. That was it. We were out in the cold. No more Apples for me.

Microsoft started with the IBM PC. The PC had a fortunate spy incident in which IBM OS basics were stolen before the PC came out. On this issue would anyone watching the movie please get their head on streight. If you will note there is a correspondingly intense increase in the ozone layer north of the "hole" where the atmospheric conditions that create the hole revert back to their normal state and as a result the inhabited areas of South America, Australia and New Zealand are actually more protected than usual. Now I am sure some idiot is going to flame me for coming up and pointing this out but the whole CFC story is a damned hoax. The film proves it. The whole issue is the polar vortex and is the result of temperatures at altitude going below -205 C. Once the atmosphere warms above this level the resulting situation is that the ozone reaction reverts back to operation and the missing ozone reappears with a vengance.

As to the whole CFC thing. This is pure physics stuff here. CFC 12 is one of the lightest CFC's. It is 5.5 times more dense than air. What is more CFC's were picked for the job, not because they were the most efficient, though they were highly effective. They were picked in the 1920's and 1930's for the job because the CFC's were inert, and they were immissible with air. This ment that they could be easily made to fall from the work area if they leaked and the only danger they presented to workers was asphyxiation. They were entirely non-toxic. Inside the machinery they didn't cause rust or breakdown and they were easily seperated from air. If somebody were to look at a bottle of the CFC's they would find warnings about the pooling of the gas in low areas. IT SINKS IN AIR!

For the geeks out there who haven't studied Archemedes Principal, that 5.5 times heavier than air coupled with the fact that it doesn't mix with air, produces the same effect when CFC's are dropped into the atmosphere as dropping a solid steel cannon ball into a lake. Since there are noted to be no large collections of cannon balls floating on lakes the obvious conclusion here is that CFC's are highly unlikely to float up to the high atmosphere and cause any problems. They can't do it. They fall out. In fact CFC leak detection even in presence of a spouting upwards leak with pressure (I have witnessed this in person) is difficult unless you go below the leak site. I have also watched parts washing with CFC's and there too the employees encountered no CFC's above the pan. The appearance of CFC's in the upper atmosphere is as likely as floating cannon balls. To use the Computer geek term NULL!

The appearance of chlorine in the upper atmosphere is not unusual though. The Sea is full of the stuff. (Salt) Meteors have a substantial content of the stuff. Volcanoes kick it out massively. If the appearance of chlorine in the atmosphere was a threat to life on the planet, the greatest threat would be the ocean itself. (again this is a NULL reality) I know it is a religion with some people that CFC's are a problem.

The eliminated refrigerants were replaced with highly reactive chlorine compounds which when properly labeled by their true chemical content would be either Phosgene Gas or some similar compound. These are truly dangerous to the staff who works with them. If they are not phosgene they burn easily and become it. This cause HCl gas to form on contact with water. Talk about your atmospheric chlorine! This gas is most able to go to the upper atmosphere!

The whole CFC thing was a myth kicked off by Dupont as their patents on CFC's ran out. They wanted to kick CFC's off the market and push in some new patented compounds so they could keep getting royalties. Acutally the real environmental damage is from the fact that the substitutes are not only dangerous, they use a lot more energy to do the same job. As a result they cause the use of more gasoline and more electricity. This results in massive increases in pollution.

First let me say that I am going to let anyone who want look up whatever they want. I will leave enough key words around to do the job.

The concept of life doing nuclear reactions is not new. In 1799 Joseph Priestly doing a study on hens discovered that they emitted as egg shells and waste about 2 to 4 grams of Calcium not taken in by their diet. The process at the time was called "Transmutation of Elements." Subsequently it has been found that bean sprouts transmutate several elements including manganese into iron. (The top of the fusion energy set). This has been studied by the US Army and by the French Nuclear researchers. It is real. There are two Nobel prizes in the 1970's related to this.

Nuclear reactors typically the type of the US Navy get problems with bacterial growth in their main cooling loops that cause blockage and cause the requirement for repairs.

For those who are doing a bit of thinking.... (I know its really hard sometimes.) The process is now pretty well known and mapped out. The mitochondria of cells can and do Fusion reactions as well as some Fission reactions. In the hens if the making of potassium into calcium was their only reaction, they would heat up like a really big nuclear reactor. Fortunately for us all, the hens also do ENDOTHERMIC (heat absorbing) atomic reactions as well. The upshot of this shows up in a lot of places. It explains the differences in content of geologic sediments from their parent rocks. It explains a lot of other things as well. Life is very much a factor in the atomic mixture we find on a planet. What is more it completely messes up our cosmology. Yes you can get fusion without the nuclear containments of a star. In fact that isn't even needed at all in the whole universe.

Curiously there has not been found any major geologic structure on earth that doesn't contain life. It probably penetrates to the core. I would suspect from this that the assumptions about life are all wrong. It is probably true that the entire universe is alive at every location to some degree. In terms of the science called Chemistry it also says that what we view atomic fission and fusion reactions as merely a spectrum of the chemical reaction series with Chemistry at the low end, Fission higher and Fusion still higher. There is also no prospect that this is the top of reactions.

The purpose of this posting is to stimulate people into looking into the realities of our world rather than having them accept what they are spoon fed in school. (Your teacher and your textbooks might just be WRONG!) At the present there are several advancing sciences with working technologies that are pushing back the walls in energy and gravity research. If your search engine is working, you might find some curious with reproducable experimental apparatus on the Anti-Gravity front out of Brazil using thermionic currents and mu metal. About 15 years ago they had a major accident. A fire led to an explosion. The explosion produced a massive mushroom cloud that was shimmering white in color. The weather at the time was extremely hot and very still for several days. The mushroom cloud went up about 4 miles and was about that big around. The base of the column from it was about 1/2 mile across. It looked for all in the world like a nuclear blast but it hung there for about 2 days. Traffic on Interstate 75 was blocked for about a day. A large area was evacuated for nearly 3 days for fear of fumes and the obvious danger of this cloud.

I found the whole situation quite entertaining because it was an entirely idiotic reaction of the public safety people. There were no hazardous fumes. The cloud that arose was made of pure salt and was a microscopic dust. It did no damage. The original detonation while being most spectacular was entirely contained and didn't even hurt anyone at the plant. I saw the plant site 2 days after the blast and honestly you couldn't tell it was hurt at all.

There are several points here about the handling of substances for propellants. The first and foremost is that in quantity items that are not particularly explosives normally may well behave in that way. The next point is that the rocket fuel in question really should be treated as an explosive. The community really should regulate where it is and where it is transported. Their lives are at risk. This isn't a free enterprise or freedom issue. Big accidents do happen with big amounts of explosive or chemicals.

Effects of substances in food are hardly all known, further more; the effects are complex effects of all of the content.

In recent years much debate had developed over the fattening of Americans due to various reasons. Honestly the discussion is just not into reality. The real reasons for any animal group getting fat is not lethargy or available dietary supplies. No population of animals and mankind is no execption, has significant fat populations by mere inactivity or supply of food. Fattening is achieved by malnutrition by imbalance of the mixture of a diet. Cattle for example are fed an entirely unnatural diet to fatten them. Drugs such as antibiotics also cause fattening due to hormonal effects. In short the Fattening by the American Diet is malnutrition due to feedlot diets, imbalanced mixes of nutrients in food items due to breeding or genetic manipulation and hormonal imbalances in these foods due to additives in the process of developing these foods.

For those who might disagree, our European ancestor populations to Americans who have by trade laws refused the American diet, have not gotten fat even when they had surfit food supplies and are inactive. This isn't lifesyle --- It's Chemistry!

This forum is too short to do a serious discussion but the whole issue of "improving foods" needs to be seen in terms of the economic drivers. Here is an example: Chickens! Chicken meat is a business that lives on very thin margins about 4% or less. You can by feeding chickens antibiotics cause them to gain 30% more weight per pound of food. No producer can remain in the market with these margins and survive not feeding antibiotics to fatten. If you ban the domestic production, NAFTA and GATT call it a non-tariff barrier to trade if you prohibit the import so all you do is cause imports to swamp domestic production if you ban the process. If you eat the chicken produced with antibiotics you will also gain 30% more weight per pound of food than with chickens not fed the diet. The hormonal effects carry through to the people. This is in all meat products and there are analogs in the plant products to this as well.

Any "improvement of foods" program will be targeted at economic incentives just as with the chickens. As with the development of broilers calculated to react in maximum to these effects that was funded by McDonalds, all such improvements will be so targets. You can anticipate the effects as a result. It went like this. Question: "Why do you have warning sirens 65 miles north of your wells?" Answer: "We figure that if we blow the rig [Gulf High Island II rig] that is about how far the fire ball will be in about 10 minutes. Question: "If the fire ball is that big in 10 minutes, what are the prospects for the rest of the State of Alabama [Extends 369 miles to the north]?" Answer: "We figure that inside of the next 30 minutes to an hour, nobody will be left alive in the State of Alabama." Question: "If this is so, what is this I hear about a shortage of energy?" Answer: "We are not worried about running out of oil. We are worried about running out of Air to burn!" At this point he reached over and handed me a sample core from one of the wells. I would have assayed it to be glass. It was not what I would call permiable material. It was actually a sedimentary rock but it was very dense and contained much sand in the matrix. He then told me that they actually had not drilled the primary deposit. The deposit was more than 100 miles off shore and they had drilled into a leak in the edge of the deposit and were using the leak as a pressure reducer. The pressures at Gulf High Island II were 31,500 psi. He said that the estimated pressure in the deposit was about 165,000 psi and they actually were afraid to drill the deposit.

Off shore of the US Gulf of Mexico coast of Alabama and Florida is the worlds largest deposit of Oil and Natural Gas. It is so large that even the Petronius field is still some 60 miles or so away from the prime deposit and has pressures at 65,000 psi. The middle eastern deposits never go much above 1,500 psi. This deposit is so large that it contains enough natural gas and oil to supply the entire world for several centuries. The reasons for its slow development are primariy political and some in the safety arena. It is a deposit that could easily cause a catastrophy on the scale of the largest mega-volcanic or asteroid impact events if it is mishandled.

The issues of supplies of oil all ignore the USA. On land in the USA in the Eastern Overthurst region is an estimated 6 Trillion Barrels of oil. In the Western Overthrust is estimated 12 Trillion Barrels. In the Rocky Mt Shales and Tar Sands in the USA and Canada are something in the order of 50 Trillion Barrels of Oil. The deposits in Alaska and the Arctic Sea are stunning besides. The Atlantic Coastal Deposits of Oil and Natural Gas in the US Waters are probably larger than all of the Land based estimates. The Pacific Coastal waters of the USA have massive deposits as well. All of these deposits are not drilled because of US Domestic Political decisions. Coal in the USA dwarfs oil and gas 100 to 1. Again most of these deposits are not developed due to political reasons.

I don't understand the bizarre obsession with the concept that an employer should not maintain the integrity and functionality of their greatest capital asset. If the cash register goes to ailing, rest assured major efforts will be made promptly to bring it back into functionality. If the inventory computer craps out watch the dollars fly to fix the mess. Let the man running it get sick watch the "capitalists" bitch moan and complain that they cannot simply dump that person in the ditch and get another functional unit. Capitalism preserves its capital assets and a decent company realizes that its human beings are its highest from of capital.

I love the standard slashdot responses running around that we in the USA are running some sort of capitalist economy and it is some how "the best." Honestly there are many things we do in the USA that are great and right. Our "capitalism" isn't one of them. Right now investors can chuck their money into stocks but there is little or no hope that they will be paid back in return as the company makes money. Here is the Walmart Example following

Walmart braggs about its associates being stock holders. They pay a dividend far lower than may be returned on Government Bonds or from even a simple CD at the bank. All of this would appear to be a company with marginal earnings. Actually Walmart finances its stores through the various Industrial Development Boards. They don't own the stores or even pay for them. Walmart then demands tax free status to open up in a town. As such they don't even pay to educate the next generation of kids to work in their stores or be their customers. They factor their inventory on a 60 day delayed after sale payment schema. All of this said you can do your earnings calculations on a company that has no investment or risk and is making markup on all sales. The company then has an inventory turn rate of about 90 times a year with a net (after all those stinking worthless employees -- for effect) markup on each sale of nearly 40%. Doing the simple math here they are a company earning about 90 * 40% a year on an cost basis against an investment that is not theirs and is so low that ROI is impossible to do anything but estimate. This means that the company is earning about 3600% against 100% of the entire investment of all parties in the store. They against their part which may be even less than 10% of that are earning at least 36,000%.

The upshot of this is that they build massive devices in the supply chain to scrape off this profit and avoid stockholders, tax entities and other factors that the are obligated to pay.

To be blunt capitalism is where investors get paid for earnings. That is what Walmart will never do. They are structured to defraud their stockholders.

As very nearly every product supplier to Walmart has found out, they throw their weight around. You sign on thinking you are going to make a profitable access to the market. Then they come back throwing weight around. Shortly you as a supplier have your profit margin (The reason you are in business) squeezed to zero and below. You can't make this up in margin. Shortly if you don't cave entirely, they find another supplier. If you cannot sustain, you go broke. This is no formula for profits. It is the formula to go broke. Walmart of course profits all the way to your funeral or bankruptsy.

I have some good news. Dollar General Store is about to slit their throat. Dollar store is locating in areas where Walmart lives and eating out their roots. Dollar store is paying their help and giving them benefits like insurance. Dollar store is serving their customers and I can already see that Walmart is headed for the ropes. You can only slit the throat of your suppliers for so long. Then you go broke too!

The fair questionon global warming is to investigate the mechanism carefully. All of the sources of heat and of the transport of that heat are reasonable matters for investigation.

To this end there is a series of electromagnetic effects in the solar system that have not been investigated at all well. These involve the massive currents of plasma and electromagnetic energy coming from the sun and how it affects the earth. The earth itself generates massive currents in the area as well. The induction of these currents is a matter needing investigation. I personally suspect the magnetic reversal condition of the earth to be related to a stellar magnetic field condition that may be inducing more currents and as such more heat.

To illustrate these effects and their gross values I point people towards the Boxing Day (Dec 26,2004) Quake and tsunami. This event is supposed by the geophyical people to be the product of a subduction event. Had it been such an event, the uplift of the Sumantra area of the southern Asian region would have caused the corresponding drop in sea floor. The uplift is about equal to lifting the entire continental US by about 20 feet. The net world wide sea level drop would have been about 2 feet. It didn't happen.

This event corresponded to massive ionosphere effects and to several massive Solar Flares preceeding it including CME's of most massive size and velocity. The event has been measured to have altered the rate of rotation of the earth and its G constant. These are impossible without the obvious conclusion that the planet gained mass that day. If we are seeing this sort of events going on which obviously created many cubic miles of material from energy and this has been observed from the data, we are obviously operating quite outside of the geophyical models that are so popular today. Bluntly we know almost nothing of what is going on. Please get curious people and quit holding onto old worthless theories.

First at least we are starting to get a discussion of schools --- I am Glad for that insted of the usual Flames of Slashdot. Next For a tiny bit of fact! Public schools in the USA are typically funded about 3 times that of their European counterparts. Public Schools in the USA do vary from State to State and locality to locality but the honest to God truth is that they are lathered up with money. The fact that they don't spend it for the education goals of the taxpayers is another matter which taxpayers should take up with administration.

In Alabama schools who always chaif that they are under funded, the data is that the school systems run with a variation of +/-20% generally across the state from average. The total amount of funding for the building, physical plant and for classroom teaching and administration amounts to about $13,000 per student per year. I would like somebody to figure out how that is under funded. Please explain? That is just about 5 times the school funding of New Zealand who does quite nicely. I don't claim to know every state's funding but when Alabama who admits to being 49th out of 50 comes up with numbers like these, I suspect something is not rational in those who claim schools are under funded. Facts just don't seem to interfere with the discussion.

Yes I know about the annual shake downs for various causes. I know about all the claims that "We just cannot afford to have tissue and soap in the bathroom." I have heard it all about "The teacher doesn't have enough money for the whiteboard pens or supplies etc. I also can do a little bit of math, something those who disagree about funding just cannot seem to do. I wish I could send these people back to math class.

Make no mistake, Alabama is funded diffently than some of the other states. The lowest funded school systems in the USA actually work the best! The highest funded ones are the biggest failures. In particular the performance of all schools in the USA is INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL to the amount of FEDERAL FUNDING.

Excuses for teachers don't cut it. There are good teachers who take all the bad kids and get good results. There are rotten teachers who you hand the best students to and they fail. The only consistency on the issue of teachers is that the quality of teachers is consistent for each individual. We know a good teacher when we see one but nobody seems to be able to identify before they teach if a teacher is a good one or not. Educational level for teachers has little or no effect on their performance. (This isn't excusing the sin of trying to make teachers teach that which they don't know) This is why I pushed the evaluation of teachers. It was to identify good ones and empower them. It was to cut the bad ones out. It was to help the middle scale teachers to get better. I was the one who pushed using the state Champion Teachers to teach the others how to teach.

As to the concept of kids having too much opportunity the development of kids in school is never entirely consistent but generally if school is too easy for them they do worse. This includes life being too easy for them generally. Rich parents do produce a lot of failures as do very poor parents. It is the middle that seems to have the most success.

There are cultural differences and these are too deep to go into here. Generally stated parents who push their kids get kids who develop more. All of this Psychobabble about feelings and such does not work. All the bureaucrat speak about needing more money is to say that if you apply a sufficient poltice of federal reserve green onto the teacher, he or she will be healed of their inability to perform. The issue is more who is doing what than what is being done.
