The best way to get people to do something is to make them have to. My friend kept geting letters from the bank requesting his new address when he moved. He tossed them on his kitchen table and let them sit for a few weeks because he didn't care. Suddenly, his card doesn't work when he goes to lunch. Now he calls the bank, wondering why. The bank asks him for his new address and reactivates his card.
Most of the 100,000 account holders are most likely just as plain irresponsible.
I live in a city where you can walk everywhere. Do you want to go to school? Grab your backpack and walk. Sidewalks are everywhere, there are no 20 lane streets and the layout is a mix of apartments, houses, small companies and retail stores.
Why can't more communities focus on how people actually live? We have created this problem for ourselves.
A top ranking CIA official was on the Ali G show. The CIA guy didn't even know Ali G was a total fake. Kinda freaks me out that these people are in charge.
akes it possible for schools to afford computers for every student, something that makes a huge impact on their overall educations.
It sure does make a huge impact on their overall educations. They will suffer. Computers != solution for bad teachers. Now we have another babysitter along side of the TV.
Sure, they can be useful, but they are mostly a distraction and should only be used when neccessary. You know these people will want to use them all day long because of their "investment"
Has anyone thought about the increase in energy consumption and that added cost?
but one can't help but wonder if such a device will breed less assertive graduates who lack the will to stand up and voice their opinion on sensitive issues.
In the time of woodstock, when all the youth were smoking marijuana everywhere, they accepted it. Is it more accepted now?
Yes. Hell, most of the middle schoolers around here are half way to being potheads. Often, with age, one realizes that it isn't all that great wasting your hard earned money on something that will progressively slow your mind. Still, I know plenty of parents who don't care and even occasionally get high with their kids. Kind of sad, really.
MacOS X and operating systems that can marry the power of a good command line with the ease of an excellent GUI shall inherit the earth.
I'm interested in how the new windows command line stacks up.
The key to being extremely valuable is to know why tools and programs work. Once you know generally why something works, say, TCP, you can apply that knowledge to specific cases regardless of their platform.
Almost everything boils down to a matter of syntax
I realize this is the simplistic view, but it has helped me in my daily jump between Windows, MacOS X and various Unix platforms.
It doesn't label the disks, but it does allow you to keep them all in one place and is daisy chainable. I'm planning on getting one soon to house backup discs.
I must admit, I really like Tiger's Spotlight. It has improved file management on my machine considerably.
Having said that, how can this apply to removable media? I would like to see a feature on the next MacOS that automatically indexes removable storage.
Let's say I burn a CD of some data. The finder should keep track of which files I burned to that CD, long after I erased the actual files from my hard drive. That way, I can perform spotlight searchs on my data, even if it really isn't present on my local drive.
Find the file that you want and the machine prompts you to insert the proper CD.
When it gets corporate backing, it will be in the dictionary.
The proposal to create a "Name Change Task Force" originated with Peter Machno, manager of Seattle's sludge program, after protesters mobilized against his plan to spread sludge on local tree farms. "If I knocked on your door and said I've got this beneficial product called sludge, what are you going to say?" he asked. At Machno's suggestion, the Federation newsletter published a request for alternative names. Members sent in over 250 suggestions, including "all growth," "purenutri," "biolife," "bioslurp," "black gold," "geoslime," "sca-doo," "the end product," "humanure," "hu-doo," "organic residuals," "bioresidue," "urban biomass," "powergro," "organite," "recyclite," "nutri-cake" and "ROSE," short for "recycling of solids environmentally." [19] In June of 1991, the Name Change Task Force finally settled on "biosolids," which it defined as the "nutrient-rich, organic byproduct of the nation's wastewater treatment process." [20]
The new name attracted sarcastic comment from the Doublespeak Quarterly Review, edited by Rutgers University professor William Lutz. "Does it still stink?" Lutz asked. He predicted that the new name "probably won't move into general usage. It's obviously coming from an engineering mentality. It does have one great virtue, though. You think of `biosolids' and your mind goes blank." [21]
That's the great thing about old laws. They are designed to make everyone a criminal. Think about how many things in any given day you do that are illegal if the law is followed to the letter.
To make matters worse, they say ignorance of the law is no excuse. Tell me how I'm supposed to know all of the existing laws, when there are hundreds of local laws and likely thousands of state laws.
Perhaps there should be a system whereby every 100 years a law must be reviewed for it's relevence.
Gamers will be put off by the fact that games can't take advantage of SMP.
I believe Id took advantage of dual G4 CPUs in Quake 3. From what I recall one CPU was assigned to AI and audio while the other handled graphics and such.
As AI gets more realistic, it needs more cycles. I think dual core CPUs have their place.
Are you talking about the vector one where you flew an x-wing? Good times...That's the first arcade game I can remember playing. Oh, to be a kid again.
I should RTFA but what about images and general formatting? I suppose you could find the relevant text, then try and get the physical book...but if you could view the book in it's original formatting...that would be sweet.
Just how much storage space will all this data consume? It seems like a massive undertaking.

I hate people who stereotype! They're all alike!
And what's so bad about that? Without the pretense of religion, actions must be held accountable largely to reason and reason alone.
You cannot kill in the name of God if no God exists.
Politician: Yes, we are terribly sorry. We'll make sure that those game developers pay!

It may help you understand why this, anti citizen decision, and many others came to pass.
Big deal. So anyone with a little bit of knowledge and desire can cripple the entire internet in one blow.
We can't let the terrorists win! We must comply with this obivously good idea.
Oh wait...

The government sure hopes so. :-)

The correlation that the "think of the children" groups talk about is that...it just runs the opposite way.

BlindMan: What the hell is so great about being able to interpet various intensities of light?
My friend is in one of these B SciFi Channel movies. His part should air in about a month or so. He gets shot by Campell. Good times.
Saying or doing? Because, last time I checked...they were saying alot of things. Doesn't make them even remotely true.

Toxic Sludge is good for you
I am feeling bitter today
Cause that would be just plain silly. :-)
