    if you have to wait a year for a third party to develop your useful apps then you have already lost.

    if you have to wait 18 months and then hack a security update onto your system because it is being blocked by your carrier you have already lost.

    Apple is developing good apps already paving the way for IOS developers. Google is letting other people do the heavy lifting and porting.

    They won't release a wifi version too. every xoom indeed every android device will always have a 3G or 4G modem or lose all access to google marketplace. Since there is no competitor to google marketplace for android there will be no wifi only devices. You must pay for the the 3G connection and then disconnect it later. Always making android device more expensive for wifi only.

    Flash is dependent on adobe and like all mobile flash is fundamentally broken for 50% of the flash api's out there.

    shipping with a non functional SD card slot is stupid. Such an update that may or may not get blocked by the carrier. what happens when you spend $800 on a device and $30 a month only for verizon to say no you can't have that update. that is a very likely scenario.

    your quite right it is a static glass shard, and very dangerous. However if it really does have a static charge then the oppsite charge with a gentle breeze should blow the suit mostly clean.

    However it is also very water soluble(fine dust ). Means it can be washed off. The mud can then be used as cement to strengthen the walls of the outpost.

    hmm moon dust in cement. I wonder what that would be like? could we mine enough for it to be practical?

    but would you pay more to beta test it too?

    The xoom is shipping with a broken sd card slot, no flash(other than the ads saying it has it) and if you want the full 4G modem your paying for you have to mail the unit it)

    spending more for a crippled unit doesn't sound right. Apple should be doing that not everyone else.

    That is why apple is secret. don't tell people you have a full port for intel, or sparc chips. just make sure it works, wo when you do switch no one will know when until it is too late.

    the apple phone rumors started in what 2005? that means apple had 2-3 years more development time than everyone else on the market. The ipad 3 is already under design, it's spec's may have already been mostly set too. competitors are designing to the original ipad, and maybe the ipad2 if they are lucky.

    It took the competition 3 years before they couldn't really start to challenge the iphone. First movers have the advantage you can shift target goals easier.

    but they aren't losing money on the parts.

    Instead Apple is using it's massive cash reserves to buy 10 million of each part ahead of time knowing that they CAN sell them.

    Samsung is only buying 2-3 million at a time. he who buys 5 times the parts you are is going to get a better price.

    Since nearly everyone is going to get some college, one would think the tuition rates would hold the line with inflation however many schools are raising tuition costs almost as much as the 400% health insurance has gone up in the last decade.

    The college I went to in 1997 was $15,000 a year tuition it is now $40,000 a year.

    Can not for profit schools afford to keep up that kind of inflation?

    that would be my plan for all the we didn't walk on the moon conspiracy theorists. Take them up there first and convince them they are right and they can just remove their helmets.

    So add in an electrostatic ion breeze just inside the airlock. Or if you have extra water(moon I know) a quick hose down will work as well.

    There are several ways to deal with that problem.

    x86 on MiPs required a secondary x86 coprocessor that changed the instruction set.

    So if it started on MIPS then it did so very poorly.

    Besides do you really want your parents knowing you spent the night drinking and then had a one night stand with a a random woman you picked up while drunk?

    Mixing family and friend relationships is in general a bad idea, unless you are a very boring person.

    So you have to install an add-on, and then the recpients have to install an add on, and both sides then need to exchange keys.

    so you have 4 steps before you can even consider sending encrypt mail. Someone needs to simplify the process( while not actually removing steps)

    I spend more time dragging things between monitors and rarely touch hose dumb buttons.

    well that and ease of use.

    Setting up openPGP is a pain for someone who has never had to deal with it before, and not mention then you have to have the other end using the same encryption.

    while it makes sense, people aren't very smart about these techie things and really don't want to think about it.

    I don't encrypt my email simply because 99.9999999999999% of end users don't know what it is or how to decrypt it, or even which tools to decrypt it with.

    maybe if you would realize that average person just wants to plug it in and it works, instead of spending hours tinkering to get each of their router, phone, computers working.

    being open takes a distant 3rd or 5th place to ease of use and first setup.

    I believe the exact wording is that it must have a persistent connection. it is why none of the archos tablets have marketplace, or google applications.

    There is another restriction on developers that if you use google marketplace you can't use any other marketplace.

    Apple may seem hostile but google is trying to actively kill development.

    No they are trolls, because every year they say how thankful we should be they decided not to charge us this year for the stuff they gave away for free last year.

    Next year they will say the same thing. They have said it the last 2 years now that I know of. Oddly enough 2 years ago was when Google started dealing with VP8, and actually opening up those codecs.

    Right now you have to pay to use H.264 every time you, encode, decode, stream, move, or look at the file. Only because MPEG-LA are such nice people they actually only charge you for encode, decode, and stream.

    If you think your not paying, then you might want to take a closer look someone is paying it for you then raising the cost of doing business along the way.

    The customers aren't the people who read the topic but the Ad companies. And the Customers get what they want or they go elsewhere.

    I completely agree. I own iphone, and Mac computers but the ipad while the close to the form factor I want is to big for my needs. I am tempted to get a nook color and root it, but it seems like that if I have to break something I just bought to make it useful I am wasting money.

    Here is to hoping Samsung will come out with a wifi only tablet sometime in the next year, as the tab is close to what I want.

    Of course that isn't actually every going to happen. Wi-fi only android devices will always be subpar as they aren't allowed in the google marketplace, and there for won't be given the energy they deserve.

    um yes they do. I am doing right now on snow leopard.

    You need rosetta and the classic emulator from leopard or tiger(not part of standard install but on the install disk).

    it works okay. not great but functional.

    But why make the dummy volume so big? Why not make it 1 gb or 1.1 CD's worth and then claim it was bad sectors on the drive?

    Or better yet just encrypt everything on a flash drive and keep the drive physically hidden unless your working. An SD card is very easy to hide.
