MSFT singularity is an awesome project the problem with it, it will never be used in a commercial system. by the time MSFT marketing gets their hands on it it will look like vista and be twice as slow. MSFT has a lot of great engineers. The problem is that market has higher ranks so actual products suffer.
right up until your skype or vonage sessions are interperted as too much bandwidth. Also video chat is the kind of thing that will probably set this off.
lots of high bandwidth low latency connections are required by many programs to provide features that dial up couldn't.
Actually take a look. last I saw Apple had $15 billion in cash.
MSFT is spending ton of money on R&D the problem is they get very little on the ROI in R&D.
Apple spends 10 million in R&D and makes a 100 million dollars off the product.
MSFT spends a Billion and makes a million off of 20 products.
I can't fathom the amount of waste MSFT generates. if Windows and or office were ever to stop selling MSFT would be bankrupt within 3 years. longer if they started spinning off the other divisions that actually generate positive cash flow.
So it was a wishing well, and MSFT wished for the well to poison itself?
MSFT is just that greedy. Granted so can be IBM. but IBM learned that if they adhere to standards they can not only be more profitable but are able to wiggle business away from others easier, as they aren't locked into a specific platform. It is a two way street, but that is a small price to pay for a greater chance at more business opportunities.
a SSN wasn't supposed to be used for anybody but the Social security administration. Things have a habit of spinning out of control when introduced to the masses. Unintended effects can quickly become the normal operation.

So what is worse the ice caps melting and might possibly flood , killing 100's of millions in the low lying flood zones, or running out of oil and 6 billion people in a war fighting to survive against each other.
One is an absolute certain thing to happen with in your lifetime. can you guess which? Mother nature has nothing on the future war of oil supplies. At current growth rates in india and china you have maybe 20 years before the supply is so low that countries will wage wars against one another to secure oil supplies.
So what? We know for a fact when the dinosaurs roamed the earth several degrees warmer than it is now. We also know the average CO2 level was quiet a bit higher.
We know that the earth goes through periodic ice ages, does it not make sense that it also goes periodic warm cycles? or is such a fact beyond the ability of reason? Ice shelves routinely break off. We know this is true. how because they aren't millions of years old but only thousands.
If they melt and reform over the course of 100 thousand years and the human race is what 40,000 years old who are we to judge what is the acceptable rate for melting ice caps?
We Also know for a fact that ice ages tend to happen in a hurry. The initial ice forms quickly, grows slowly, and then melts. would it not make sense for the warm cycles to follow a similar pattern?

We have a few hundred point sources from before 1920, and it slowly goes up from there. indeed according to climatologists this past summer should have been warmer than average, yet instead it was cooler. climatologists will need to be right more than 50% of the time if they want me to believe them. Heck just this past weekend the only thing they predicted correctly was the daily highs and lows. They were so far off the mark with wind, clouds and rain that it isn't even funny.
The Farmer almanac predict a cold winter,for most of the USA, while climatologists say it will be warmer than normal. Yet the track record of climatologists is horrible, the farmer's almanac is right about 80% of the time.
maybe maybe not. they aren't lies they are half truths because the important people haven't made final judgments and decisions. Anyone who has gone through a corporate sale/merger knows this all to well, the really important decisions seem to wait until the last possible second.

Actually if they already have large flat panel monitors, use a small computer like a mac mini, or one of the mini itx boards. Mount the video camera either above ore below the display and conceal it slightly if needed.
that way they could simply push a couple of buttons on a remote and activate it. you get the big veiw, comfy chairs, of the living room while you chat.
As long as you can turn it off occasionally it isn't bad.

It is one thing about linux I like. you can see the progression of change in the software. everyone else tries to hide what horrible things and stupid ideas they tried in the past. In 6 years time people are going to go there was Vista?
That sums up my expirences nicely as well. 3G coverage sucks even in major cities. If I leave 3g off though I don't drop any calls. My only real complaints is a weird echo when using my cars Bluetooth headset. Flipping the phone upside down seems to solve it. It is almost like the mic doesn't turn off.
