    still, that's the original indexing time, if you start small and work up to the size it won't be so bad.

    also you're using modern processors and hard drives, by 2022 347 petabytes won't be anything when we all have terabyte hard drives... think about it, that's 17 years, how big/fast was your hard drive 17 years ago? Let's see... 1988... I didn't even have a hard drive, still all floppy.

    By 2022 we'll all have hundreds of terabyte drives and measuring transfer rates in gB/sec, if not larger/faster. Sorry 347 petabytes is not impressive when you're talking 17 years from now.

    Last I checked I can get 200gb drives for about $100. That's me, just some guy buying one drive, paying 50 cents a gb, so I'm guessing they're paying a lot less buying a petabyte at a time, so what's with the 4x pricing? I understand the need for profit, but 4x?

    exactly. These on-site tech support people are not for /.ers. They're for people that don't know computers and don't know someone that frequents /.

    it is nice to hear a tech support job not moving to india though... and the nice thing about this is you never know when you'll walk in some guy's house, fix his PC in a minute, then have him offer you a job making triple at the business he owns.

    Oh i should note, a 10 ml ink cartridge contains only 26 cents worth of ink if purchased by the gallon.

    You know it's sad when entire stores can pay their rent, operating expensives, employees, etc, just by refilling ink... just goes to show you how much they're really hosing the customers with these printers.

    Here's an example: 10ml of HP black ink is over 15 british pounds. 1 USD is about 1.8 british pounds. There is 3785.4118 ml in 1 US gallon.

    If you do the math (378.5 ink carts per gal * $27) that means that a gallon of black ink is $10,219 if you buy the manufacture's ink cartridges. You can buy a gallon of black ink for less than $100.

    I'd say a 100x mark-up is a bit excessive, can you imagine if even the cheapest cars were over a million dollars?

    I think they should be sued, that's absurd, and now they even have a built-in expiration date. As if 1000% profit isn't enough....

    holy crap you weren't kidding.

    It means that picking a public fight with a newspaper owner or editor is only going to make you look stupid, but it relates oh-so-well to CFS systems.

    I should buy a CFS just so I can tell my friends and family they can't fight with me anymore cuz of my printer... sure that'll go over real well...

    Kenwood made a 72x CD-ROM drive with multiple heads a few years back. Also allowed the CDs to spin much slower while still achieving high speeds, making the drive much quieter. From what I remember it was a great drive according to reviews, guess it was just cheaper to put one head in than several and spin the disc faster.

    I once went the wrong way and didn't realize it for 20 miles. If my gas tank had only been, say, 23 ounces instead of 23 gallons I would have ran out of gas after about 3 miles, then I might have realized my mistake earlier and not wasted allllllll that gasoline.

    They really need to fix that.

    Seems all these articles whine about how "loud" the 80mm fans are. Well there's plenty of instructions out there explaining how to run fans at 5v instead of 12v, significantly reducing the sound to the point that even generic fans are inaudible.

    what I don't see very often is reviews address all the other sounds in a case, like the damn hard drives. I never hear my fans, system is water-cooled with two 120mm fans at 5v, but all nite all i hear is GRINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNND of the damn hard drives. Why doesn't someone address this issue and do a REAL review on how to get rid of hard drive sounds? Sure silentpc has done a few, but everyone else is like "yeah, i hear like, a fan, sometimes, so i'm gonna run my new 4000+ processor at 800mhz".

    talk about unoriginal....

    um, because your TV is what, 480x440 (another source), and your monitor is what, 1600x1200 or higher?

    someone remind me why they need the equivalent of two GeForce 6800 Ultra cards to run 480x440 resolution?

    Unless you're planning on spending big $$$$$ for a real 1080i HDTV then it's pretty stupid to compare a PC running at 1600x1200 to a TV at 480x440.

    Also let's not forget the PS3 won't be released for another year, so by then those video cards will be half the price. Then you gotta wait for games to be released, while the PC video cards will run on everything out there.

    Modern 21" monitors weigh less than 70 lbs and 19" less than 50 lbs (link link link link), so you guys breaking your backs over 50 lbs are not exactly hitting the gym too often are ya?

    Look at the movie studios, I'm sure when color movies came out some idiot said "OMG what are we gonna do! Now we have color once people see one movie they're not gonna want to see another boring old color movie! There will be nothing new to add! The whole movie industry is doomed!"

    there will always be new stories and new ideas, it doesn't matter if games look exactly like a movie. Best thing about games is they can keep recycling the same old games with new graphics every few years like the new leisure suit larry game, etc.

    Innovation. If the Apple OS didn't look so great would XP look nearly as... um, well it's better than Windows 3.1. Lots of MS innovations came from stealing ideas from non-MS products.

    Also means MS has to adhere to standards instead of making up whatever they want when there are other products using the same internet, etc.
