I don't believe there is enough profit for MS in software for tablets. The apps are cheap and there is no upward pressure on prices.
Apple makes billions of dollars a year off of app sales, at least $3.4 billion. Selling hardware is a one time thing, customers buy it and keep it for a long time, but apps can be purchased everyday. Just like the console model, customers buy one console, but keep buying games for years, and Microsoft makes the money on the game sales not the console sales.
Also if the hardware is not in the hands of customers then there is no one to make apps for so developers don't make apps. So it works like this:
1) sell hardware cheaply so everyone buys its
2) developers will come when they see there are customers to buy the apps
3) when customers see there are apps, more customers will buy hardware
4) Profit!!!
This business model has worked for Apple, Google, every console (Sony Playstation, Nintendo, etc), even selling razors, where the razor is cheap but the blades are expensive
Exactly. Traffic police generate tons of money just like the marketing staff. Problem is they're making money by stealing it from the people paying their salaries, rather than trying to stop crimes. That's like the marketing staff stealing money from the customers. Not good.
This. Religion has become like Apple on/. We use to hate Apple, then we loved them, now we hate them again./. just follows popular media opinion, I'm sure we will love religion again if we are told to do so
I was thinking "Epic fail 2, and Epic fail 2 pro".
It is the price. They are still trying to sell at Apple prices, but MS is not, and has never been Apple. If they had released a tablet at around $300 they might have had a shot. There is a bit of a price gap at around $300.
This. Microsoft needs to compete with Android tablets, not Apple. Microsoft needs a $199 tablet to compete with $199 Android tablets. Surface RT is still overpriced at $349. You're a software company, stop trying to make profit on hardware! Sell the hardware cheap and make the money from sales through the app store! You make the Xbox, haven't you learned anything from how console sales work yet? Or are you purposely pricing yourself far above market so you can lose money? Because that's exactly what this looks like, like you're not even trying.
Who is forcing? My iPhone 5 is still working just fine on iOS 6. I upgraded the iPad Mini and it's working just fine, but I'm not ready to mess with the phone, got too much stuff on there to just run out and upgrade to the latest and greatest before it's been properly tested by 200 million beta testers [businessinsider.com].
I'll wait for 7.1, then wait two weeks after that.
Ill never own one either, but keep in mind those chargers are shit and break. Its not that hard off the beaten trail to assume they are trying to protect their brand by eliminating the levels of suck.
This. They saw the touchscreens take over and did nothing. But who can blame them after blackberries with keyboards replaced the touchscreen Palms that were oh-so-popular early to mid 2000s. But when they saw the iPhone come out they really should have kicked it into high gear after seeing how Apple completely dominated MP3 players with the greatest of ease.
Students bring whatever calculator they want for calculus, why not whatever tablet they want? If all the classes are accessible through a browser what does it matter? But then do you really want to connect your personal tablet to the schools network?
Do you have more information on Apple's security track-record? Seems to me to be much better than Microsoft or Android. As to biometrics not being safe, where has this guy been for 10 years? Biometrics is everywhere, my laptop and desktop both have biometric scanners. Passwords don't seem much better with cameras being everywhere now days, I remember a story of some thieves stealing debit cards by hiding a card reader and tiny camera that watched the keypad at gas stations. Nothing seems to be secure if a thief is determined enough, although I would feel more comfortable if the biometric scanners also checked for a heat signature so a simple photocopy of a fingerprint could not work.
So then wouldn't it be the opposite? People with cavities had to have an x-ray to have those cavities filled, so more cavities = more xrays. Those without cavities just brushed their teeth frequently = no X-rays.
Already exists. There's a Ubuntu phone in the works that obviously allows scripting. You can hook it up to a monitor, keyboard and mouse to use it as a real computer too. Really that's where Microsoft should be going with Windows 8, the days of a desktop, tablet and smartphone being separate devices are limited, phones already have more CPU power than a 2007 desktop so why are we limiting them to a 4 to 5" screen? Someday soon you'll be able to walk in your office and flick the screen of your smartphone over to your desktop screen and sit at your keyboard and continue to work on whatever you were working on.
You forgot several hours of battery life in a market where battery life is usually several months. That's the killer. If it lasted several months I'd probably buy one.
Calculator watch battery lasted several months. This lasts several hours. Calling the Galaxy Gear a calculator watch is a insult to the calculator watch.
Allison Benedikt is right but in the wrong direction: everyone should go to private schools, and the govt should give public school money to the private schools. Private schools are far more efficient than public, receiving far less money but students have much better test scores. The govt interferes too much in public schools, they're beyond repair.
Public school's have two goals: make every kid average and keep every kid in school. The more kids the more money, and average scores is sufficient. Heaven help a kid if they want to excel in school, administrators will try and keep then there and not help them advance like they should, rather the schools needs the smart kids to bring up test scores. That's why it's almost impossible to get a GED before age 18 in most states, requiring local superintendent approval no matter how smart the child is, and it's impossible to attend any college without a GED
You will never open those books, because anything you need to look up you can find much faster online then thumbing through a 1,000 page book you read XX years ago
I'm more worried that they're saying he was "brilliant." Those actions are trivial. I'm disappointed that's all he had to do to get that info.
Agree with his actions or not, anyone who declared him anything more than "some sysadmin who took some liberties with his access" shouldn't be in charge of gathering, investigating or protecting anyone's sensitive data.
THIS.
I came to post the same thing. This is like calling a child that signs their parents name on a school note as "brilliant". Sysadmin has access to everything, it's like saying the locksmith is "brilliant" for opening the door.
Agreed. No one should be able to drive right onto any airfield. This is airport admin error more than iPhone error.
Waze has led me off the highway only to tell me to get back on the highway so many times that I've lost count. Waze is no better

I admire Android users fearlessness though, to run an OS that freely gives complete control over everything to any app or website. I have no idea how Android users sleep at night, knowing their Android phone can be remotely wiped and reset to factory settings simply by visiting a website.
wrong link, here's the right link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2370130/iPhone-charger-puts-Beijing-man-30-coma-electric-shock-days-air-stewardess-died-charging-Apple-mobile.html

this right there. People have been shocked and killed by a counterfeit Apple chargers.
Apple is trying to save lives and people are bashing Apple for it? Seriously android fan boys need to give it a rest.
Laywers get rich regardless. Point is patent troll suffers.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. You're probably better off losing contact with him.

Would you rather the school supply the crayons and parents supply the iPads?

A little used system that few people even know about is shutting down.
That's why this is News for Nerds, because only Nerds would have even heard of this service.
