Boy, I didn't expect Apple to roll this out so soon, but seriously, how long will it be before Apple is distributing feature films DRM'ed via the itunes/ifilm/iwhatever they're gonna call it.
I know I would order, as long as it's not too ridiculously expensive or restrictive.
I just called and asked to be placed on the 3rd party non-disclosure list, and asked for a paper copy of the information as well. Let's see what it turns out to be when it gets here...

There was a discussion recently on/. about the transition to mpeg4, mostly about how it would screw the hdtivo owners.
Basically, when the spaceway sats go up, there will be a transition to mpeg4 and an elimination of mpeg2 saving bandwidth, allowing for more hd channels and tons of hd locals, etc.
Hopefully there will be a reasonably priced hd pvr offered too...
And boy, did spamhaus roll us over the coals on that one. Our ISP changed providers and bought into one that had a block of IP addresses that used to be owned by a spammer and when the spammer vacated the premises, they weren't nice enough to let Spamhaus know that they had left the neighborhood, and consequently, when we moved in, WHAMMO, blacklisted.
It took a lot of investigation, and then using a different email server to forward all of our email through for a couple of MONTHS to get everything resolved.
And, boy were the Spamhaus people super nice and helpful.
Just suck it up and hack your directivo, run any number of free apps on it, and download unscrambled pure mpeg2 streams from the satellite to your hearts content.
Unfortunately, in lots of markets, you may only have one real broadband option (I am not including satellite in this comparison, mostly because of FAP) and by forcing a bundle on the consumer, the consumer is being victimized by a monopolistic, exploitative business.
Case in point, my house, I have a cable modem, and thankfully don't have cable as they don't offer HDTV channels in my market, and I'm not required to have cable to have the luxury of high speed internet.
DSL is unavailable to me currently, and given my rural nature and distance to the nearest switching station, will most likely always be unavailable to me.
I just jumped ship from QWEST, our local telco, to Vonage because their ever rising prices and lack of competition were killing me.
Thank goodness for unbundled connectivity (comcast).
Yeah, we've used this functionality to track vehicles to recover abduction victims in the past. OnStar wasn't even active in one of the vehicles, and it was no problem for them to locate it, and in short order.
I read somewhere about a case where OnStar was used to capture voice conversations for some type of investigation, but I don't remember where it was...
Xboxen will only boot from a locked hard drive, and to modify the files on an Xbox to, you know, allow you to run your own home written unsigned code, you need to be able to lock the drive once you've modified it to get the Xbox to recognize it.
I have encountered bioses that won't allow you to lock or unlock drives. Very annoying...
this is just what I am looking for to jump ship from direcTV. 1000 bucks for their HDTivo is absurd, so i continue to use my DirecTivo instead. Now if we would just get HDTV over Comcast in my area, I'd be all over it.
I have Comcast internet cable modem, so I am pretty surprised that I can't get HDTV over cable, but maybe some more educated cable type can fill me in there...
My standard deal for friends is I get to drink beer at their house while I work on their boxen. So what if that virus scan takes like 2 hrs, that's a lot of beer!!
It works out to be pretty cheap for them too considering what tech support could cost.
After reading all of these comments and digesting the ridiculously fast speeds and low cost of internet service in France, Hong Kong and Japan, i wonder what we are doing wrong here (other than paying way too much for way too little...)
Can anyone explain that to me? I'm a comcast customer, b/c that is the only broadband service available to me, and I'd sure like some more upward bandwidth for my little home server.
I know I would order, as long as it's not too ridiculously expensive or restrictive.
Hmm, I blame that squarely on the Knob Creek I was imbibing while posting this story...

That is what I was wondering. This has to be worth some money. Just saying, sorry, I'm an idiot shouldn't be enough...

that's what I do anyway...
The expensive or difficult thing, item #0 is the IDEA, the thing that makes the startup actually worth something...

Man, that would take forever to read on my little old Nokia 3390. I can see like 10 letters per line, and a whopping 5 lines of text per screen.
Maybe good for a Haiku, but that's it...

Now I can relax. Oops! Hope Apple isn't reading this. Too bad they're not the RIAA...

So much for Idle cycles...
What'd be really sweet is if it could read the track names and info to you instead of you having to read them yourself...
