  8. Re:hmmm on Cell Phone Jamming on the Rise · · Score: 1

    1. People talking on cellphones usually seem to be talking louder than hey would in a normal conversation, even when they are talking about very private things. I think it is a psychological thing: if you are talking with somebody, you are "ïn the room" and aware that other people might overhear. If you are talking on the phone, you are in a "separate place" and more or less oblivious of your surroundings.

    2. For some reason I find it is harder to block out half a conversation than two people talking

For me, the fact that there was no "explanation" was exactly what made the original Rama book so good.

I did read the sequels, but I did not like them much- for me they were the kind of book I throw across the room in disgust, but then I can not help myself picking it up again later (late Heinlein has the same effect on me)

We also downloaded it today, to see if it might be useful for compatability testing. The first site we tried it on revealed it behaved differently from safari on the mac- both in rendering and in javascript. I really hope that this is because of bugs that still have to be ironed out, otherwise it will just mean yet another browser we might have to support.

  25. solution on NASA Puts A Stop To Space Romance · · Score: 5, Funny
I think NASA should adopt the Dr.Strangelove solution.

General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?

Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature. Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.
