My IBM 600x screen is flickering like crazy. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I think i have determined that it is the ribbon cable from the MoBo to the LCD. Any suggestions on how to fix this. And is this a common problem?
Thank you very much for the information. I guess that is a part of the slashcode? Either way, I will make sure whenever I post a link to use the correct html to prevent that from happening.
Not to be an ass, but this link you gave does not work due to a space in campaigns. here is the correct link

I have a password protected word file from a teacher's edition of a text book on Java Programming. I just tried to open it, and if you do not enter the password correctly, you can not do anything. No re-saving it as a webpage, no editing it in notepad.
From what I understand about these systems, you provide your own processor. Basically you buy the case and the motherboard, then you supply the ram, proc, media drive, etc. You can make it as up to date as possible.
I would disagree with you in one respect. I have taken many operating system classes as well as doing develpment for an internal company build. Components intergrated with an OS usually are more stable. I am not stating that they are better products. But with all the freeware/shareware out there, there are a lot more chances that some rogue code may cause your computer instabilty by causing a memory leak or conflict or some sort. That is the reason I would suggest staying with WMP.
You did bring up a good point about real player. Is Media Player Classic the same thing as running mplayer2 from the command prompt? That is the classic skin for Media Player. I am not familiar with the product, but I will take your advice and check it out, but I am holding you responsible for any system crashes!!! Cheers!
I have XP running on a PII 266 with 384 MB of ram and it runs great, but the PII 333 from school was I think shared ram as well as onboard video as oposed to a seperate card. Also a 5400 rpm hard drive which for the OS drive makes a huge difference. You need to have 7200 for the drive with OS on it. I tried XP on it, but it just crawled and ran like crap. Command line 'nix was much easier and less frustrating. And it is a desktop, not a notebook.
Isn't Media Player free with his pre-installed copy of Windows XP?? why would you not use the intergrated media player? I think it works great for everyday use. The less sutff you install, the better and more reliable you system will be. I say stick with Media Player.
I could not agree with you more. As a newly graduated college student who majored in computer engineering and electrical engineering, I think this post is right on. I have my computer from my freshmen year, which was fall of 1999. It is a PII 333mhz with 128mb of ram. When I got this, it was a great box. It came with NT 4.0 on it, but now has red hat. For most users, Win 98 would be the only other choice, as XP needs more system requirments that this. So what good would this box do for Joe User now? (I actually have it is a file server, but most people would have chucked it by now after the hard drive crash of 2001). What good is a laptop going to do for these kids besides cause a headache? When I was in 6th grade I had enough trouble remembering my house key and glasses where ever I went. I would never trust 6th grade me with a 1000 dollar laptop. Between hard drive failures, cracked cases, failed LCD's, and general misuse like file sharing and music listening, you are just asking for kids to get in trouble. Imigine the attention span of a 6th grader in class with something as cool as a new laptop next to him with a teacher droning on about History. Forget it. The money should be used for computer labs and teachers to supervise them. That way, kids can go after school to do reports or use the net. Giving away laptops is an insane idea, the cost over the next 5 years will be the same as the inital layout, which will be a massive amount of money and time. Another thought: if students are required to have these laptops, I am sure the cirruclum will be written to include these in everyday classroom activities. What will happen if your laptop dies, or you lose it. Its not like a text book where you can share and all the information is the same as the one next to you, your laptop is unique with your personal information. Will you then get a failing grade?
Not sure if you are part of that 10% or not, but if so, did you transfer to another school to party more or because you changed majors. I do not think I am at the wrong school. I am getting a great education and have an awesome job on Wall Street doing desktop engineering for a large bank. Sometimes, especially early on, I did feel like crap when all my friends were out partying and I was home doing physics homework. But I told myself that it would all be worth it in 4 years, and I believe it has. I do consider myself a nerd, but when I am out no one would believe it. I was captain of the football team in high school and I turned down 6 scholarships to goto the school I am at now. I love my school and the opportunity it has given me for the future. I do not regret the sacrifice of not going out to frat party's on Thursday night's in order to be where I am now. I hope you do not regret your decision either, but I am sure you made a wise decision and best of luck to you in whatever path you have chosen.
Have you ever read this site before?? The mostly male demographic that posts here use their computers as tools all the time. They use it to save money and make things easier, i.e. making a home PVR. They custom tailor OS's to do things they need, to make personal or buisness easier and more efficient. While to you this may seem like a toy, in reality it takes a lot of brains. And i don't know what girls you are talking about, but 99% of the ones i know use the computer only for AOL and checking email without any caring about the innner workings. While I may be bias due to the fact that I am an engineer and realize the untapped power computers hold, i may have taken extra offense to this comment. But going to an engineering school and having clases with 50 people in it, and not one girl, I think it is a safe assumption to say most women do not consider their computers a tool, but a fun escape for a few minutes and quick way to chat with some friends. Just my 2 cents.
This was an awesome link. I can not belive no one wrote in about this yet. If i had MOD points you would have them. The whole scenario was like a movie. Thanks for the link
I def. think that a new languange based on quantum computing will be at the forefront. Its the next step in computer architecture, so why not in programming language.

Wow!! I know I started this post, and I do love this movie, but I never put together Sarah Jessica and that movie. Nice catch. I really need to get my hands on a copy this weekend.
When the arm part of the chair opened up, I used to get so excited. And my favorite thing was that little creature that he had in his backpack. After I saw that movie, I made my dad get me a telescope. I wish I still had the tape but i melted when my house went on fire. God Damn Combustion.

Now I am the ass who can't post a link. We both suck. I some how blame it on the security flaw in MS Word. This is a link

Great Tip for MPC!! sounds like a great piece of software. I am going to download it tonight. Hope it runs well on XP. Thanks again!!

None one appreciates a good Alanis Moressette anymore? C'mon, she was the it thing for at least 11 minutes in 1995.
I think she would make more money showing that huge dumper
I was thinking about buying this for my home. I think this is what you were talking about.

Who didn't have a crush on the red head girl from that movie?
That was hysterical. I wish I had mod points.
I am in the middle of reading Cryptonomican by Stephenson right now. I like it so far. It was a little slow out of the gate, but is picking up speed.
