Hard locks are probably not what you want in a stateless web app. (E.g. What happens if someone locks a record and then is hit by a bus?)
There's a Firefox extension for that.
In our company, users' pulses are tethered to the USB bus. The Firefox extension can then use this information. People spend hours in our time accounting system, which has a pessimistic locking scheme. The Firefox extension sends an 'unlock' when the user's pulse stops for whatever reason. We've had buses driving users over, we've had rabid squirrels, a janitor going postal, exploding Sony laptops and a manager doing the 'Godfather-baseball-bat-routine' on an unsuspecting employee. Our time accounting system runs great, we've never had a stray lock.
It's not that simple. Apple is trying to create an ecosystem with iTunes. It can function as a media server, a shop for video, audio, apps, ringtones, it's a media player et cetera, all while giving others access using a variety of means. They have the obligation in my opinion to work with others. You can't say: "here's this great open platform for media" and then say: "ooooh Palm is showing up, I'm picking up my ball and go home".
Now what Palm is trying to do is dodgy, that's true. But there's another side as well.
I like the title of that article "Paris-Matches alters les poignees d'amour from Sarkozy's photo". In French, you can make that 2-inch fat belt around your waist sound sexy.
Maybe a hat or tee-shirt should be required for anyone wearing make-up in public just so that it doesn't women (and some men) to hate their complexion!
Only a hat is fine. Just a hat. Alright, if she wears glasses, she can keep them on -- I'm not the complaining kind.
>> My work will require a written source until I've been dead for 6 years. What computer format will still be in use in the 2070s? > ASCII Plain Text.
It's probably the safest bet for English-speaking countries. But you should mention ASCII is not complete or even usable outside of English-speaking countries.
There is still a lot to be said for a low-tech approach that is not vulnerable to power blackouts, viruses, malware or spyware.
Not to mention quicker. If I have to write a note to someone, or have to make a grocery list, or write a smallish letter to someone, it's more often than not quicker than printing it.
It takes some real personality, practice, and experience to be funny for a large audience [...] it will make the presentation very uncomfortable for everyone involved.
Yes, it will be a memorable event. Which is the idea of the event!
Drone 1: "You remember that meeting about security? Where he dropped his pants?" Drone 2: "Oh yeah, to demonstrate the point of a backdoor,he pulled a goatse right in front of the management team."
Just for a laugh, can you imagine America being discovered by women ? Yes, head out on that blue stuff, [...] until you get really hungry.
Horny. Columbus got really horny, not hungry. This is a lesser-known and uncomfortable fact which is unfortunately not taught at school, and the cause of a great many misunderstandings.
That's the first I've heard of any such thing. A quick Google search seems to indicate iPhones work with regular bluetooth, offering a moderate selection of services.
I wouldn't call it a 'moderate selection', the iPhone support for BlueTooth is quite limited. It supports wireless earpieces and headphones, but stereo audio was only recently added in the 3.0 update.
The audio support is not complete, because only a couple of devices seem to work, and then the play/pause/volume buttons will not work. I'm speaking from experience; I recently bought a beautiful Sony-Ericsson bluetooth headset only to find out that the iPhone cannot change the volume (always has it running full-volume).
The iPhone does not support the OBEX file transfer protocol. You can't connect to your PC and cannot exchange files, business cards, or photos with other phones over BlueTooth. Keyboard usage over BlueTooth (which Nokias can do) is also out of the question.
A big post full of ifs and coulds. But I guess because of the size, it's modded up.
So when there is a glitch there is a bunch of finger pointing as there is no mono-culture who is interested in making the overall product better but just one piece of it.
RedHat, Canonical, SuSe, Debian, et cetera have not written all software that make up that distribution, however, their core reason for existing is that they take responsibility for the overall picture.
So often the security fix doesn't fix the core issue just a stop gap somewhere in the line.
Care to give examples?
And if that module was replaced with an other then it could happen all over again.
Peer pressure isn't a new phenomenon. Groups mutually conform, as part of their group identity.
I don't think it's just about peer pressure and groups.
I've read the book by Neil Strauss in which he becomes a "pick-up artist". One of his techniques for impressing girls is to have you and a friend go into a bar and act like you're having fun. Laughing and joking is contageous to the girls, but they are not in your group, and neither is peer pressure involved there.
You know, that it what I have always wondered about this whole "touch control" idea-who exactly out there is screaming "Hey I WANT to put big honking greasy fingerprints on my screen
There are coatings to somewhat alleviate that problem. Some newer mobile phones, which rely heavily on a touch screen interface, have this coating. It repels the natural grease from your hands and makes the display look less smudgy.
Because the world has decided putting videos of yourself puking on YouTube is the killer app for our modern technology.
Oh, get off of your high horse. The whole world except you has decided that having fun is a great way of spending time. As for what's considered fun, well... *shrugs*
I've had fun shooting impromptu videos of me and the girlfriend on holiday, going to the beach, playing with my nephew, etc. And then sharing it with friends, and the world as a side incident. Apple/YouTube enables this and I think it's great.
Yeah. Tell me about it. I was a MSR intern last year. Non-Research interns got the red carpet, while Research's got the shaft.[...] Every attendees received a free Zune. The Research interns were pissed.
They got the Zune and you didn't! They got the red carpet and you didn't!

Your mom is the wind beneath my nutsack.
Ah yes, the rusty trombone. Very popular these days.

What's pretty funny is that it just got another +1. Mods are on crack today.
If you allow some random troll make you feel shitty, you have a lot of growing up to do.
Why the fuck was this comment modded up? It adds nothing whatsoever -- can someone with meta-modding take a look at what is going on here?
That is not a universally accepted file-type marker, AFAIK. Only Windows' default Notepad app does this, right?
Better include a note that it's UTF-8 encoded, because this cannot really be determined by looking at the file.
I know I'm a nitpick, but the answer "just use ASCII" is not really a complete/correct answer.
I would expect that your tendency to burn in sunlight would indicate that you are in fact, a vampire.
Possible answers:
- You know, being a vampire isn't a black-and-white issue.
- That tendency to burn in sunlight is a bloody nuisance.
- I got HMHVV via a blood donor.
- I don't bloody care whether it's a he or a she
Haha very funny. Laugh. Please try the veal.
I just assumed you had a cold.
(And a speech-to-text interface.)
He probably double the killer delete select all.
Whether you are liked or not is a big part of the puzzle in keeping a job.
Sad but true..
Why is that sad? Respect from your peers is an important thing.

You'll have to do a lot better than that.

For a bit of fun (well...), check out this link: iPhone 3G S Oleophobic Screen Passes the Ear Grease Test. Utterly disgusting.
Note I don't disagree with your other points.
A website is not the same as an app. For many things, an app is infinitely preferable to some generic website.
