My guess is that any company would have fired him. They should fire his editor for publishing it as well.
I'm always amazed with how easy Americans talk about firing someone. The impact of losing one's job on the person in question, his family, his colleagues et cetera is very big, with emotions likened to the death of close relatives.
"Just fire him" "He should be fired" "You're fired"
I guess it's a cultural thing and the impact is lessened because you know it can happen. Still, even reading about it takes some getting used to.
Everybody will see their own creation through some form of rose coloured glasses.
Am I the only developer that will readily admit that yes, my code is truly a horridly patched together monstrosity that deserves to be hunted down and tortured to death?
It's very successful. AI has been redefined in the last 15 years to mean a number of particular algorithms that solve specific problems. For instance for classification problems you mostly start using neural nets.
Also, most succesful endeavors combine algorithms, for instance neural nets with some sort of fuzzy logic (also considered AI).
Something similar happened in The Netherlands, although on a smaller scale. Some company ran a contest to name a new type of potato chips (en-uk crisps) and internetters voted en masse for the name "WithoutStyle", after the similarly named blog. In the end, the company bended to the pressure, although for a short time only.
Two weeks with one carry-on? If you change underwear and socks daily, and you bring two pants and 7 shirts, and a toilet bag then that baby is FULL. Yes it's feasible, but it awfully tight.
It really seems like the world economy exists to pump the wealth out of my environment.
I see this going on in my country as well (small West-European). Except, we actively aid this process by spending 0.8% of our GDP to foreign aid. Personally, I feel that we lead a pretty good life and I also feel it's my moral obligation to pass on some of that wealth.
I have the feeling you're seeing the issue cast in a negative light. Instead, think about how you're in the luxurious position of being able to miss some of your earnings.
Enough with the touchy-feely, on to the facts...
as a percent of gross national income, its contribution is only 0.2%, proportionally much smaller than than contributions of countries such as Sweden (1.04% and the United Kingdom (0.52%).
We actually characterize our chip's RAM's bit-flip behavior by actively trying to cause bit-flips in a radiation-filled environment.
For people interested, here is a picture of such a test: radtest1.jpg. What you see here, is the electronics placed under a glass dome. The dome is vacuumed. The arm is holding a metal dish which has an open bottom. In the dish is a californium particle source.
I work for a semi-government space research organization as a software engineer and as part of my work, create test scripts to test our electronics with custom ASICs for radiation hardness.
My "vegetarian" sister and her child say that they refuse to eat meat, then they will turn around and gobble down a fish or some shrimp.
I'm not a vegetarian myself, but usually skip meat for a couple of days per week. So I'm in Brazil and ask for a vegetarian dish in a restaurant. The lady of the house first points out dishes with fish, then politely suggests that she can serve this Beef dish with half the beef:-)
Also beware the phrase: "do you want a girl for tonight?"
When I did my bachelor's thesis in Shanghai, I once drank a beer with one of the Western people I knew there. He worked in trade. He said that agreeing to said phrase will significantly alter your negotiation position in the morning. On the wrong side.:-)
A person can, for a substantial period of time, be tricked by a 'flirty' bot that comes across as a cute, dumb female. It's kind of funny to see a (sub-average intelligence, I'd guess) person hold a running dialog/virtual relationship for several months with a bot.
Anything to boost my ego. I've personally set up six bots which I have a long-distance relationship with. I go home after work to my (real life) girlfriend and I sit there listening to her complaints but still feeling smug.
It's the only way to deal with it, besides nuking her from orbit.
1. BE HUMBLE: even if you're an alpha, don't play one. set it aside and adopt an alternate persona.
Good advice, and I'd also like to point out that it can be useful to show a little attitude every now and then. My girlfriend went and got her Masters in economics while she was doing a ~36 hr/week project management job at a bank. Although she's a brisk lady, usually she'd keep a low profile at the university. But one time, she asked a question after class and one of the profs waved her off and said to put it in an e-mail.
She kept standing at his desk and said: "I'm sorry, but I've got a working job and just as you, I have a shortage of time. Can we handle this right away?".
Prof's attitude instantly changed.
So yes -- keep the alpha attitude to yourself. But sometimes let it rip with all you've got:D
Somewhere there is a developer kicking himself HARD for not checking his sourceforge email account.
This doesn't just happen to Carmack. I've found and logged bugs on SourceForge, then wrote e-mails to developers asking whether they'd consider fixing it for a fee. Never got a reply.

and Sun-made x86 to a lesser extent
You mean "Sun-licensed" -- they don't build their own x86 boxes, they just slap a sticker on them.
the phone had some real glaring problems that were never resolved. Such as a one day battery life.]
You mean like the iPhone with Push e-mail enabled?

Oh no, I think you're quite right. As far as I know, the only thing that's different is that you can delay activating new features.

Slashdot hates unicode with a vengeance.
I'm running a small company and I've got a paid account for Google Apps. But then again, I think that one doesn't have the beta tag anymore.
Hey, you're back! After your hilarious journal entry about the battle with a broken toilet, I never saw you post so I'd figure you were gone.

In case you're wondering, my name is Catbert.
Personally I'd make it pink and give it a Hello Kitty sticker. Keeps people on their toes ;)
At the office.
Colleague 1: "I hate mouse mats"
Colleague 2: "I have a Hello Kitty mouse mat"
Colleague 3: "I can't begin to imagine how happy you must be..."

Why not encrypt them in the usual way, then upload/download them?
If you want to start your own business and can't do our own books, you're screwed.

Seriously, if you make such a statement, please consider explaining the background. Why is it that if you can't do your own books, you're screwed?
I once got a heated twenty minute lecture on this subject from a San Francisco bondage model
In other words, she tied you up in conversation?

so if the teen has a full stomach then what do you think the next priority is
Linux?
