My guess is that any company would have fired him. They should fire his editor for publishing it as well.

I'm always amazed with how easy Americans talk about firing someone. The impact of losing one's job on the person in question, his family, his colleagues et cetera is very big, with emotions likened to the death of close relatives.

    "Just fire him"
    "He should be fired"
    "You're fired"

I guess it's a cultural thing and the impact is lessened because you know it can happen. Still, even reading about it takes some getting used to.

It really seems like the world economy exists to pump the wealth out of my environment.

I see this going on in my country as well (small West-European). Except, we actively aid this process by spending 0.8% of our GDP to foreign aid. Personally, I feel that we lead a pretty good life and I also feel it's my moral obligation to pass on some of that wealth.

I have the feeling you're seeing the issue cast in a negative light. Instead, think about how you're in the luxurious position of being able to miss some of your earnings.

My girlfriend went and got her Masters in economics while she was doing a ~36 hr/week project management job at a bank. Although she's a brisk lady, usually she'd keep a low profile at the university. But one time, she asked a question after class and one of the profs waved her off and said to put it in an e-mail.

She kept standing at his desk and said: "I'm sorry, but I've got a working job and just as you, I have a shortage of time. Can we handle this right away?".
