    It's one reason why I never bothered with the shoddy-quality on-board integrated sound in motherboards.

    Yeah, I can see where you're going. Also, try to listen to soft music and enjoy the noise that other stuff on the motherboard creates. But with 50% of sales consisting of laptops or similar, on-board is the way we're going :-/

    And for what? I certainly don't want sounds from different apps mixed into an ear-assaulting mess. I want one thing at a time.

    I don't. Most apps assume they can just open() the sound device, but actually that doesn't work. You might have a music player running in the background, and then start up some VOIP software. Or have the music player running while your messenger program needs to play a sound when you receive a message or something.

    This is appropriate, modern usage.

    Very obvious, perhaps, but not at all a necessity. Great iPhone games like Dropship don't suffer from the touchscreen controls in my opinion.

    I know, but what I meant was new hardware. Linux often can't keep up with the rapid rate of new hardware flooding the market.

    I was slightly disappointed when looking for the amount of drivers added for desktop users. Looking through the release log, I can only find one driver added for the home desktop user. It's for a new 3G modem, which is nice. I'd expected lots of other devices to be added, actually. One of the things that disappoints people when moving to Linux, is that it doesn't support their hardware.

    That's all a bit bleak, isn't it? I'm an outsourcer myself actually (for my own company) but I bump into lots of potential projects that I can't outsource. Small jobs where the overhead is too big, for instance.

    There are plenty of people stuck in the eighties still. Just look at the popularity of emacs and vi around these parts.

    "Stuck?" If it works for those people, why are they stuck? The last release of vim (vi's modern incarnation) is numbered 7.2 and was released on 2008-08-09. The Dutch developer (who works at Google) accepts donations which go straight to a charity fund active in AIDS-plagued South-Uganda.

    Totally stuck, alright.

    Whatever performance boost we'd get from Cisco hardware (or Nortel or whatever) simply couldn't justify the vast difference in pricing

    I'm not a network guru, but isn't there a lot more to it than plain performance? I'm thinking about easy to set up redundancy, fast recovery (fast booting), low power usage, stability, less moving parts etc.

    These are all pretty bad with standard PC equipment.

    I'd like to take the opportunity to point to Samsung's MP3 players. For anything between $35 and $80, they have players which support the unemcumbered and patent free OGG format. No affiliation but just a loyal customer.

    Reminds me of my late grandpa (God bless him). He was of the old school. Sure you could drink all you want, and still drive. But, he assured me, you have to use common sense and adjust your speed!

    Fortunately for the rest of the road users, his speed wasn't that high to begin with. So after a copious meal with four glasses of wine, he would drive home with about 5 to 10 miles per hour....

    I'd like to see this on cheaper hardware...

    Sun has entry-level hardware which is comparable to HP or Dell rack-mounted stuff.

    Even if Sun puts this stuff on their high-end machines, sooner or later that stuff is going to come trickling down to the cheaper boxes.

    After reading the articles, a fix seems to be to uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader, and disable the Windows Search service (because Adobe's IFilter DLL is not removed when uninstalling).

    Next step is to install another PDF reader like Foxit. I did download Adobe Acrobat Reader again, but didn't install it. In case of emergency, I can always temporarily install it.

    Problem is, I can't find the procedure for completely uninstalling Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Anyone found this?

    As soon as you claim it, I'd like to start a datacenter on there. I'd rent out dedicated boxes and install my custom Linux distribution on it, calling it Garbix.

    funny thing is, it seems the approval process is taking longer because of stupid processes. Example: create a corporate account. Wait two weeks. Then get the request to fax yoir Chamber of Commerce certificate.

    Wait -- wouldn't it be smarter to create a webbased form where you can upload your scan? Or at least mention the requirement so I have it on file in time? Some things about the signup process are just not well thought out.

    That's simply not true. It comes up in the following instances: (copy/paste from Wikipedia)

            * Changes to system-wide settings or to files in %SystemRoot% or %ProgramFiles%
            * Installing and uninstalling applications
            * Installing device drivers
            * Installing ActiveX controls
            * Changing settings for Windows Firewall
            * Changing UAC settings
            * Configuring Windows Update
            * Adding or removing user accounts
            * Changing a userâ(TM)s account type
            * Configuring Parental Controls
            * Running Task Scheduler
            * Restoring backed-up system files
            * Viewing or changing another user's folders and files

    In my previous workplace, there once was a rare moment of silence when everybody was working hard. One guy broke the silence and said the momentous words:

    He has been ridiculed ever since and there was some suggestion of printing his question on a mug or a T-Shirt. I'm slightly ashamed to say he's still my friend. Or actually, I'm proud of it :D

    Imagine, 1979, then again in 1985, then again in 1996, then again in 2001 and now in 2009... People forgetting the huge roadblocks and drawbacks of the thin client model

    Who said anything about a thin client model? I'm talking about a big ass mainframe in my living room and me running a virtualized copy of Windows on it.
