  17. For new Immigrants Canada is a tax haven for 5 yrs on Corporate Work in the US vs. Canada? · · Score: 2, Informative

Whenever I mention to Canadians that I bring people to Canada as a tax haven, they shake their heads in disbelief. After all, Canada has a well deserved reputation for having some of the highest marginal tax rates amongst the OECD countries. What most Canadians do not realize is that Canada has a well established regime of tax sheltering to attract new residents that it does not offer to its indigenous population. With proper pre-immigration tax planning, wealthy individuals can move to Canada and avoid income and capital gain tax on their non-Canadian source income and capital gain producing assets. In addition, since Canada. Does not have an estate tax, it is often considered as a favorable domicile of choice. Furthermore, while Canada does not have an instant citizenship program it does allow those who have been permanent residents for three years to acquire a Canadian passport. Being one of the most treasured travel documents in the world, the Canadian passport provides visa-free travel to most countries and allows the holder to take advantage of the North American Free Trade Agreement to live and work in the United States. Finally, as a result of the recent decline in the Canadian dollar, residents can enjoy an excellent lifestyle with all of the infrastructure of living in the United States at almost two thirds of the cost. In looking at Canada as a possible destination, there are two main considerations; qualifying for permanent residence and tax planning. I will look at each in turn. ABILITY TO QUALIFY FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCE There are several paths leading to Permanent Residence in Canada. Aside from the comments that follow relating to Entrepreneur Category applicants, the rights, privileges, and obligations of the status received are the same, no matter which category the application is made under. However, the out-of-pocket expense, level of financial disclosure, and speed of application processing varies greatly amongst the categories. Family Sponsorship Category Certain Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents are entitled to "sponsor" certain foreign relatives for Permanent Residence in Canada. Relatives that can be sponsored under the Family category include: fiancées/spouses, parents, grandparents, all unmarried children up to the age of 19, certain unmarried children over the age of 19, and grandchildren (note that grandchildren can only be sponsored if they are orphaned and the grandparents have custody of the children in question). To qualify as a sponsor it is necessary to be over the age of 18, to be resident in Canada, and to have proof of income sufficient to look after all of those being sponsored. Independent/Assisted Relative Category Individuals who fall into this category base their applications on personal skills and ability to contribute to the Canadian economy. Applications are made according to a point system. The system is designed so that a twenty-eight year old applicant with five years experience in computer software design and with employment already arranged would be assigned more points than a fifty-five year old factory laborer with no employment arranged. If the applicant has a close relative who is a Permanent Resident of Canada or a Canadian Citizen he would be considered an Assisted Relative and would receive bonus points. The Assisted Relative category includes brothers/sisters, uncles/aunts, and nephews/nieces. Self-Employed Category Self-Employed applicants are those who have the ability to establish or purchase a business in Canada that will create employment for themselves and will make a significant contribution to the economic, cultural or artistic life of Canada. There are two types of Self-Employed applicants. First are those who, on the basis of their managerial skills, proven business experience, and financial status, intend to provide employment opportunities for themselves. The second type of Self-Employed applicants are those persons who are likely to be successful in Canada in a particular cultural field as artists, singers, writers, musicians, a

  18. A NEW MODEL OF MARS AS A FORMER CAPTURED SATELLITE on NASA Says Mars Once "Drenched With Water" · · Score: 3, Interesting

    http://www.enterprisemission.com/tides.htm

    ABSTRACT

Conventional models of Mars, based on measurements by initial Mariner unmanned spacecraft, found an arid, apparently ancient environment without current liquid water. This prompted subsequent, highly negative assessments regarding Mars' history, and the difficulty for the origin and/or evolution of higher forms of life. Later, the unmanned Viking missions (as well as the 1997 Pathfinder Lander) seemed to confirm this barren model. Complex, sometimes contradictory geologic theories to explain this desolate Mars environment have been proposed, based on a wide variety of observed surface phenomena and features. A new model that reconciles major puzzling contradictions among past models is now put forth, using new observations from MGS high-resolution images of Mars and a reevaluation of certain Viking era experiments. Small-scale surface features are identified which, it is proposed, are the direct product of wide spread ancient and recent bursts of subsurface liquid water. These water "stains" are shown to cluster (beyond statistical chance) in an unmistakable tidally-determined, bi-modal distribution on the planet: centered near the Tharsis and antipodal Arabia "bulges." A revaluation of Mars ancient history is therefore proposed, suggesting that Mars (well after solar system formation) was captured into synchronous orbital lock with a larger planetary companion ("Planet V"), accounting for the clustering of present day water bursts around the former beds of two bi-modally distributed "Mars ancient oceans" as a direct result. The current Tharsis and Arabia mantle uplifts are shown to be an inevitable additional fossil signature of such former tidal stresses, induced by a close gravitational relationship with Planet V. Other heretofore inexplicable Martian surface features are shown to be consistent with such a simple "tidal model": Valles Marineris (as an eroded ancient tidal bore, formed immediately post-capture); the presence of the extremely flat terrain covering the northern hemisphere (via deposited sediments from the once tidally supported oceans, when released); and the current trench or "moat" around the Tharsis bulge (from relaxation of Tharsis back into the mantle, after tidal lock was broken). The long-mysterious "Line of Dichotomy" is explained as a remnant of a "blast wave" of debris from this sudden severing of the former orbital lock relationship with Planet V, due to either a catastrophic collision or explosion. Chemical signatures of this extraordinary destruction event on Mars are shown to be consistent with the model; including the distribution of olivine preferentially below the line of dichotomy; the presence of primitive mantle and core materials such as iron and sulfur in unusual abundance on Mars surface; and the concentration of proposed "water stains" in areas bereft of olivine. Mars unusual magnetic field "striping" is now shown to be another unique southern hemisphere signature of this destruction event, caused by standing P and S waves reverberating through the planet's crust as a result of the massive simultaneous impacts from Planet V debris. Recently published research showing unprecedented outflow channels from the Tharsis and Arabia bulges are shown to be consistent with the sudden relaxation of the two tidal oceans, as is the sculpting of huge amounts of material by fluvial processes north of the Arabia bulge. Two possible mechanisms for the destruction of Planet V and the breaking of this tidal lock are outlined. Finally, a new timeline for Mars geologic evolution is proposed that is consistent with these observations, placing these events between capture ~500 MYA and the destruction of Planet V at 65 MYA.

Ever noticed how most foods and drinks are sweetened with "high fructose corn syrup", rather than the simpler "sugar", and thought it was a bit odd? I'd always just assumed that it was to disguise the ingredient, but that seemed pointless given the nutritional listing of sugar content. Apparently the resolution is that the US government mandates a price for sugar which is about twice the global one. It does not mandate such a price for corn syrup, so corn syrup is cheaper. The major manufacturer of corn syrup (Archer Daniels Midland) "donates" generously to both parties to ensure the continuation of this policy.
