N. Korea and Burma are oppressive dictatorships. It is in no one's desire to let these countries have or retain nuclear weapons. The democracies of the world should do all they can (and thankfully they are) to disarm and dissuade these nations from their nuclear weapons. Thankfully, the US shows no intention of giving up this fight.
"Early in the sixteenth century, Wan decided to take advantage of China's advanced rocket and fireworks technology to launch himself into outer space. He supposedly had a chair built with forty-seven rockets attached. On the day of lift-off, Wan, splendidly attired, climbed into his rocket chair and forty seven servants lit the fuses and then hastily ran for cover. There was a huge explosion. When the smoke cleared, Wan and the chair were gone, and was said never to have been seen again."
If only poor Wan hu had covered his rocket chair in pottery tiles to act as a heat shield for re-entry maneuver, he may have lived to tell the tale. Legend says he saw no need for a space suit as he could hold his breath for 'a really long time'. The truth is out there!

It's all sequels, prequels, and superhero movies. I have a 60 inch HDTV and just watch what I want in my own home theatre now... and my popcorn has real butter on it too!

I drink about 4-8 cups a day of the black gold. Of course, I'm aware of my addiction. I keep the coffee black so as not to add unwanted calories with sugar or milk. About every two months I do a detox and quite cold turkey, the migraines are a killer. Then I switch to tea for a while. Inevitably I go back to coffee though, once detoxed, the attainable caffeine buzz is better than ever. Besides, I hear coffee prevents cancer, so its a double win.

I used Apple all through the 90's in the 'dark days', had an iMac, then switch to using windows and IBM Thinkpads (when they were still American) for about eight years. Tired of the windows mediocrity, maintenance issues, viruses and Trojans I finally switched back to Apple. Got a Macbook, iPhone, iPod. Life couldn't be better. Apple is ubiquitous and has a store in pretty much any country in the world. Their prices have fallen and are fairly competitive, while also maintaining an edge on competition by offering superior customer service and user experience. As long as Apple offers their superior product designs, user experience, and customer service, I'll be using them for the foreseeable future. Who really cares about competition? All of Apple's so called competitors (Samsung, HTC, others) as) are all non-American Companies anyway have clearly stolen/copied many aspects of Apple's technology. All of this is besides the point as Apple doesn't have a monopoly over anything, if you don't like them don't buy it. Simple as that. We're not talking about Microsoft who used their dominance over operating systems to keep their 90% lead in the world.
In the near future they could use a swarm of drones to both deflect the whalers boats and to scare away the whales themselves. With a large enough supply of drones, the hunting could be made virtually impossible (or at least increasingly economically unviable). This is very good news for the whales.
I just bought a cheap 4 gig Philips MP3 player at Radio Shack..cost me $100 and came with an arm band and headphones. The interface sucks, the ergonomics suck, and the colour is boring black...but it was 1/3 of the equivalent ipod (atleast here in Egypt). Anyhow, the only reason why I bought it was because I was having a cheap day and it was a present. Otherwise it would have been Apple premium all the way.
I'm not saying you are wrong with this information, what I'm saying is that the NY Times wouldn't run this story unless they did due diligence to be completely sure they are 100% right because they are held to journalistic standards. As a blogger or armchair Wikileaks reader, you have nothing to lose by publishing this under your pseudo-name online. "Oh, maybe I'll try my hand at investigative journalism today." But let's face it, you get this wrong and you lose nothing. A journalist gets this wrong and they should lose their job and be blacklisted. And that's how news sources work.
Face it, Blogging, Twitter, even SMS have changed the foundation of journalism as we know it. It's now the people on the street who are witness to events and can record them with their cellphones and instantly upload them to the net - anonymously or not. The information moves so quickly around the world that many so called traditional journalists are left in the dust. So, you can stick with your old antiquated notions of what constitutes journalism (and many who do are part of an industry that is quickly going bankrupt), or you can get with the program and embrace the technology of the 21st century. For all the praise of NYtimes, they are run at a loss and are at the behest of the billionaire Carlos Slim. A civilian with a cellphone is now more objective than a journalist worried about their next paycheck.
The key point of the linked article was not that those who were given the drug overdose because they have less education and cannot read the medical instructions, but that they are given the drug because it all they can afford given the status of their medicare. Poverty does not discriminate between those who are educated and those who are not. We shouldn't blame the victim, blame the doctors and the insurance companies.
It is true that you can get a lot of extra danger pay and post differential working in 'war zones', however as has been stated, the US is pulling out of Iraq and Afghanistan (and they are shitholes). Pakistan is another country that receives a lot of American AID, one can receive 60% on top of their base salary if they work in country -- as noted though, Pakistan is not very safe anymore.[p]
Forget working for the military, they pay peanuts. What you really want to do then is work for a consultant firm (see www.devex.com), American consulting firms that receive their funding directly from the American Government will pay the best. European firms come close, but their benefits aren't nearly as good (and who wants to get paid in Euros???). Forget Asia. Forget China.
Austerity is in the air and cutbacks are happening. One must find their niche. The international development community is actually quite small, make a name for yourself and you can work for anyone. Work in a POST-conflict country or developing nation, helping with poverty alleviation, IT, health, commerce, and agriculture. Focus on MENA and sub-Saharan Africa, central asia, and SE Asia - these are Obama's focus areas. Sub-Saharan Africa has the most development AID from the US. For example, South Sudan is receiving a tremendous amount of money. Among my associates, there have been incidences of kidnappings and even killings in Afghanistan. One guy was ransomed, another was shot dead (and these incidences are kept hush hush for all concerned). One must evaluate the level of personal risk and danger they are willing to accept before they accept any assignment. Working overseas can be stressful and not all personalities are suited. You must learn fast and rely on yourself- support systems can be nonexistent. Attrition rates are high for a reason. But one has to start somewhere, get a gig in a friendly African country and work your way up the chain. All things considered, the marginal amount of danger pay one can get in a 'warzone' is not worth it long term. ---that said, I know several people who became millionaires in the early days of the Afghan occupation. To each his own --- IMO now it is a whole new ball game. Those golden days of endless piles of money are coming to an end.
Look its just like anything else, if you're not a criminal you have nothing to worry about. Remember that scene in Minority Report, the one where those "Spider Drones" are released in the low income tenant building and proceed to crawl under every door, claw their way up the pant leg of every tenant, and then scan their eyeball for identification? Perfectly harmless!
